Subject: Email problems
Date: Tue, 29 Dec 1998 20:28:14 +0000
I've been having problems with people sending me emails, they get
returned to sender marked as "message could not be delivered to all its
recipients - we do not relay". I'm waiting on a reply from my ISP, but
I've noticed the problem has only been occuring since I installed Linux
a few weeks back.
I get a static IP address from my ISP, and the domain name is the same
as what goes after the '@' in my email address. I've just tried an
experiement, getting someone to send me a mail while I was online, and a
different one while I was offline. I received the one sent when I was
offline, but not the other.
Is it possible that Linux is causing this problem? I'm not too well read
about communications, but I had the thought that since I have a static
IP, the messages are trying to come straight to my computer when I am
online, rather that to my ISP's mail server. I have sendmail running in
the background, but I have never used it, and certainly haven't
configured it to receive mail from the internet (which it has never
done). Does anyone more knowledgable have any ideas about this?
Thanks for any comments

Hi I noticed that I cannot share /dev/dsp amongst more than one app at a
time. I can play midi and wav/mp3 simultaneously, but I cannot play a wav and
an mp3 at the same time. I get an error from sox.bin saying that it cannot
open /dev/dsp because the resource is busy. Is there any way to make the OSS
driver "multitask" amongst sound apps (i.e. switch quickly between them), so
that you can play a wav and an mp3 at the "same time?"
Perhaps it's a compile-time option? Thanks in advance...

Fine. Suppose we build a tcsh that uses a global init file from NFS;
what happens if NFS server or the network are down, and the machine has
to be brought up without /export tree?.. No shell, no login... ooops...
There is a reason to only keep stuff that HAS to be shared, on the NFS
volumes. The rest of little everyday doodads should remain local.

Hi,
should this chroot command (never encountered this - only the function) be a
script file? if so, check if the first line of the script looks like:
#!/bin/bash
#
# And now the script goes on...
if so, please make sure that you have the Bourne Again Shell installed on
your system as this line invokes the bash shell on this specific path. This
is the unix way for scripts to make sure that the right shell / scirpting
environment is loaded before the actual scirpt is executed. If you have bash
installed, I can think only of two other reasons:
1. The bash is either installed in another path (why ? Don't know!) or
2. When exec() is called, there is a different environment (PATH or mounts
spring to my mind)
Furthermore, you can call chroot() only as user root (or with those
privileges), most certainly this condition will apply to the programme too
Hope that helps

Clearly you want to see what is there before starting installs
and the like. (By the way, be careful with "Disk Druid" - some
versions use a partition numbering different from the one
the kernel uses, which then results in an install to the wrong
partition, destroying everything that was there.)
So, I would start finding some Linux boot/rescue disk with an fdisk
(cfdisk or sfdisk are best) and look closely at the partition table.
Of course there are DOS utilities as well - I think Partition Magic
comes with a partition table lister, and there are many others.

Wrong!!! thanks for playing!!
\r\n doesn't matter, a carriage return and a newline are _functionally_
the same thing. Next time you are at a command prompt, type a <ctrl>m
and you will see that it is the same as just hitting enter.
Another poster says that the script isn't set executable. Well, in the
original post it says that
'The "attributes" of the file was set to be executable by all and
updated only by the user (root).'
The file is obviously executable, and he would have gotten a "Permission
denied" error if it wasn't.
His problem is that the script isn't in the path.
He has to type "./script" instead of "script".
Please read the complete question and formulate a complete answer before
posting.

Try debugging a PPP connection on a Mac. I want a log of PPP packets sent
and received, including appropriate decoding for readability (e.g. LCP
packets need to have the various options listed in human-readable form).
I also want a hex dump of each packet data contents.

There are a number of spreadsheets available for Linux. Our company
provides two: XESS and XessLite. XESS is a commercial product with
an option for xsBasic macro support. XessLite is shareware for Linux
only. XessLite is found on many of the CDs (Red Hat, TurboLinux, SuSE),
popular download sites (sunsite), and through our site http://www.ais.com .
While I think that you don't need to look any other products (grin),
you may feel otherwise. Here are couple of other options.
Several of the CDs contain other spreadsheet products. You can
also try the links at http://www.ntlug.org/~cbbrowne/spreadsheets.html
or use a search engine (e.g. altavista) and search on "+linux +spreadsheet".

I read somewhere (maybe kernel-howto? or maybe linux-kernel listserv?)
that there are known incompatabilities with egcs and compiling kernels.
Simple solution - shitcan egcs and go get gcc 2.7.2 from any of the
usual places. One of which is ftp://ftp.digex.net/pub/gnu/ For a full

Some people really don't have a clue what FAXing is, or how it works,
do they?
Fax machines send pictures. Period. You technically don't fax a file.
A receiving fax machine takes an incoming stream of dots, represented
by bits, and puts them on a paper. That's all it does. The sending
machine usually has an integrated scanner that takes a picture and
scans it, converting it into rows of little, tiny dots, and sends the
dots to the other side.
If you throw a computer on the receiving side it can take the dots and
save them as an image file. If you have intelligent software and a really
good image you might be able to examine the picture and try to turn it
back into text, and save that as a document file. That doesn't mean the
transaction fax'ed a file.
If you have a computer on the sending side, you can save the steps
involved in putting a picture of the document on a piece of paper
and then scanning the picture to produce dots, and use software to
directly produce the dots instead. The software then sends those dots
instead of ones produced by scanning the paper version. That doesn't
mean you fax'ed a file. You faxed a picture of the document the file
represents.
Linux does not have a generic print-to-fax capability because in Unix
the application is generally expected to speak the language the printer
understands. If the application doesn't, then the application must
produce some relatively universal output that the Unix system can
process through one or more filters to produce the correct output.
The most widely accepted universal format is Postscript. Given a
Postscript file practically any output can be achieved.
What Unix print filters CANNOT do is communicate with the originating
process to set/unset print capabilities/features. Unix is a multitasking,
multi-user networking system. The source of a document can be a cron
job, some email via sendmail, an X application on another host in
another country, or maybe one of a few hundred shell processes.
Traditionally, Unix handles that by providing different 'printers' that
map to a physical printer using certain characteristics; i.e., a duplex
printer might be known as two different printers, one single-sided, the
other double-sided.
In this paradigm it's really difficult to handle fax-type problems, like
phone numbers. Since Postscript is ASCII, one approach is to embed the
information in the Postscript file and have the print filter scan for
certain keywords. The simplest way is to simply print to a Postscript
file and then manually run a command to fax it. Personally, I don't
understand why mature adults are so afraid of this. But then, I
knew a contractor who literally didn't understand the difference
between Windows95 and M$ Word.....when he turned on his laptop he
started Word, and the concept of doing something OUTSIDE the Word
environment was totally foreign. But that's not the kind of person who
should be using Linux.

In the past, using AOL 3, I have connected to AOL then minimized and run
Eudora and Netscape to surf the net. That would tell me that they are
using tcp/ip and it may be possible to run Linux on a home lan behind a
proxy on the PC running AOL.
Why on earth you would _want_ to do that is beyond me.

I'm looking at the VArStation XMP from VA Research among others and
wondered if anybody has done any performance comparisons?
Specifically the .5 -1 -2 Mb Cache upgrades with the Xeon processor how
much of a performance difference does it make under Linux?
Also using the included RH 5.2 does the second processor really come
into play ? What if you self upgrade to the 2.1.x kernel?
This box is destined for scientific number crunching, database
functions, and some graphics. So performance definitely is appreciated,
the question is whether
it's worth 5K to jump from .5 to 1 Mb cache?
Thanks,
Eric A. Kihn

To those who are interested in two monitors:
The MetroLink X server can handle up to 4 monitors using Matrox cards.
It USED to be available on the Infomagic Linux Developers Resource CD's
and RedHat.
The last RedHat that had it was RedHat 5.0 with the 4.1 MetroLink X server.
The last Infomagic LDR with it was the June/July 1998 with the 4.3.0
MetroLink X server.
The most current MetroLink server is 4.3.1
The June/July LDR is still available from some vendors.
I had a minor problem with installing the 4.3.0 server in that the
configuration file had an error which was easily fixed. The 2nd
monitor had a distorted image. I tracked it down to an option that
had to be commented out. More info available if requested.

I'm with a question (newbee probably) about the relation and function of
the X; motif, gnome, etc; and the windows managers, where one ends and
the other starts, somekind of an overview of an X system structure.
Thanks
