Is Iomega 250MB zip drive for USB supported by
RH6.1, and if so does anybody
know where I could get it to work?

Sounds like you done have portmap running. As a result, the NFS daemons
cannot register with portmap. Try "/etc/rc.d/init.d/portmap start"

I suppose that bj.c IS login.c that write log_file ( do you remember file with all

Subject: ext2 su CD-ROM
Date: Mon, 8 May 2000 13:42:06 +0200

Hello everybody,

someone can explain me how can I create a
EXT2 filesystem on a CD-ROM, in the same
way in which I create a ISO9660 filesystem
with mkisofs/cdrecord utilities?
I usually use Linux Red Hat 6.1 and
I masterize in two steps:
1) I create a iso9660 filesystem with:

        mkisofs -o File.img Directory

2) I copy the file with the 1:1 copy
   of the filesystem image with

        cdrecord -v speed=2 dev=0,1,0 File.img

How can I create a 1:1 copy of a Ext2
filesystem? The mke2fs command exists but it has different
intent apparently, with respect to mkisofs.

A second question. Can I have long file names on a
iso9660 filesystem? It is enough to create the
image with the joilet extension flag?

        mkisofs -J -o File.img Directory

Thanks,

        Nicola

[sorry for the maybe wild crossposting, but... where is
the right place for a post like that?]

You probably noticed that people tend to email MS Word documents instead
of plain ascii for just about anything. As annoying as this may be, at
my work not much can be done about it - we are a government agency :(

so here is the question:
how do you persuade Star Office to launch its text editor upon clicking
on an attached MS Word file in the Netscape mailer?

thanx in advance,

To compile linux-based utilities, you almost always need to use gcc,
GNU make and in some cases bash.

In this case it might be simpler to install from a package -- see
http://www.freeware4sun.com/ to find a precompliled version of KDE.

I don't use NS for reading mails but looking at it I would assume it uses
the standard applications setup as for webpages. In the preferences section,
under Navigator->Applications find the reference to Microsoft Word Document
and edit it so that it runs the application "soffice %s" the %s makes
netscape pipe through to soffice the file you clicked on.

I had the same prob with that chipset. The only X server I saw with
it supported was some $150 US professional system.

My rather inelegant solution was to but an ATI Rage Pro Turbo 8 Meg
card. ATIs are supported like crazy.

Other than that, S3 TRIO won't run above 640x480 2-bit in my
experience.

If you find a solution, please post it.

You may find you didn't include it in the xconfig/menuconfig/config
script?
re-run the script, and dep. on what flavour of linux/kernel you have
enable the EtherExpressPro/100 as a module or built-in.

Maybe u did this already and I am on the wrong track, but you didn't say
whether you had or not...

There is a bug in the driver. My 895 is left with the orange (lower) led
flashing after printing. Pressing the button stops the flashing. It is
possible to continue printing even if the orange light remains on. There is an
updated driver available that cures this problem, but I haven't bothered to
get it yet. See the Swiss "Bonk" web site for further information.

Date: Mon, 08 May 2000 14:07:46 +0100

I have just upgraded from RH6.1 to 6.2 by carrying out a completely new
installation. I wish to use my networked machine to access a Novell file

server, and have attempted to implement IPX support using LinuxConf.

I haven't tried to use IPX before but I think I have set up the IPX
settings correctly i.e. type of card, and frame type etc. However, I
get a socket error message error when I boot up. "Bringing up interface
lo" reports an ipx_configure error. In addition, trying manual means, I
find that lsmod does not show the ipx module to have been installed,
even though it is available. "modprobe ipx.o" reports module not found.

Can anyone suggest what's going on here? It seems to be a module problem

rather than an IPX one.

As a wild guess I'd say check the permisions on the mail files of
the users.

Usually I put it in .Xresources or .Xdefaults file:

xterm*background: Black
xterm*foreground: Wheat
xterm*cursorColor: Orchid
xterm*reverseVideo: false
xterm*scrollBar: true
xterm*reverseWrap: true
xterm*font: fixed
xterm*saveLines: 5000
xterm*fullCursor: true
xterm*scrollTtyOutput: off
xterm*scrollKey: on
xterm*VT100.Translations: #override\n\
        <KeyPress>Prior : scroll-back(1,page)\n\
        <KeyPress>Next : scroll-forw(1,page)
xterm*titleBar: false
xterm*geometry: 150x70+200+10

Nice feature, carried from standard window managers. Unfortunately, KDE does not
support it, does it?

For the most part, USB is not yet supported in Linux, and won't be
until the 2.4 kernel is out. If you need your USB zip drive to work
now, about the only option (that does not involve backports to the
2.2.xx kernels) is the Mandrake 7.1Beta distro (see
http://www.linux-mandrake.com/en/hydrobeta.php3 for details).
Personally, I keep my USB zip drive attached to a Win98 machine on the
network and just keep it shared, but I will upgrade to Mandrake 7.1
when it goes final (and gets out of beta status).

It was broken, I invoked rm from the command line and it did the same thing
(i.e. consumed all spare CPU usage) until I killed it.

I have since rebooted and everything is working now. I don't know what
caused ther problem; it may be due to overheating -- I sometimes put a
pen in the processor fan to stop it making an infernal noise as it runs
(I know, naughty me). Incidently, under Linux the processor suffers
less from overheating than under Windows98 -- proving that Linux really
is cool :-)
