Is there any particular reason you don't want to use Samba on the Linux
side and connect using the native Windows file sharing utilities? For
most purposes, that will work quite well, and Samba is free of charge.
For more information, see:

(This will give you a list of mirrors of the Samba web pages -- pick
whichever one is closest to you.)

Its mainly /etc/rc.d/rc.inet1
and /etc/resolv.conf
rc.inet1 does also run ifconfig and route commands at startup if your
ethernetcard is configured right.
You can also modify the file and castrate your current netconnection by
giving the command
ifconfig eth0 down
and then give the command
/etc/rc.d/inet1 start
And then the new and modified network configuration is in.

RPM can be converted into cpio format by a 60-line perl script.
Debian's .deb can be unpacked (revealing .tar.gz files) by "ar".

I have installed Red Hat Linux 5.2 on a machine and seem to have a problem
ftping telneting to the machines.
When I try to ftp into on of the boxes I immediatly get a
"Connected to 208.4.107.241
Escape character is '^]'"
and then nothing happens for almost a minute (I timed it to be close to 54
seconds) then I get a login prompt.
I have tried connecting to the Linux boxes from Windows boxes, Sun boxes, and
other Linux boxes.
>From the Linux box, I am able to connect to the Sun box and get a login prompt
within a few seconds. From the same Sun box, it take a minute to get a login
prompt.
Is there perhaps something that I need to add to the Linux box configuration
files to speed up the connection time?

Nothing forces you to use a package manager after the install. After you've
got the system installed, just get a disk of Metalab archives and be happy.
I'd recommend Slackware, its what I've been using for the past few years.
There is a place in the UK that sells the cheap disks for a couple of pounds,
I'm sure.

Sounds like XFree86 isn't detecting your mouse. If the Linux kernel
versions are the same, /dev should be the same across all distros. Maybe
all you have to do is create a symlink from your mouse device to
/dev/mouse. Then, I would configure XFree86 to look for /dev/mouse.
The special file name you use in Red Hat should be the same in Slackware,
if your kernel versions are the same.
What kind of mouse do you have, and what is the filename in /dev used to
access it under Red Hat?

lilo doesn't run if you have a mixed system (IDE, SCSI) in order to mae it
work get the documentation - it's pretty easy if you know how to do it
Since I use SuSE you may want to look at www.suse.com for a good
documentation - but you probably have a pretty good one installed already

The PCI soundblasters don't work with the standard Linux kernel sound
drivers. You can buy a driver suite for $30 that does, though. I'd
recommend a good ol SB AWE64. I know *that* works :)

Hello people,
I'm having a problem with ePlus for Enlightenment, it complains about a
file named
modem001.ppm. I'm using RedHat 5.2 with the 2.2.5 Kernel on a intel x86.
First I used the install script which was with the tar ball, then I
later tried to configure it and compile it on my own, no luck.
I start eplus....
Loading ePlus DR10
Opening /dev/raw for output...
Device 5 is ready
Segmentation fault (core dumped)
Error on line 145. Unable to load
/usr/local/enlightenment/lib/eplus/modem001.ppm
That's it... nothing happens. The file is there, so what's wrong?
Could anyone help me, by this newsgroup or e-mail... ?

I tried a while ago (just after glibc 2.0.7) to install glibc2 here,
but the result was a complete mess. Even following the HOWTO, the c++ stuff
never worked. Now I'm willing to try again, but before that I have some
questions:
a) how to make libc5 and glibc2 coexist? I will take lots of time to recompile
everything here, and I think there's no reason to recompile everything if I
can let it working (as I upgrade, I'll switch slowly to glibc2).
b) is there a simple way to leave glibc2 as runtime support and later make it
default?
c) is there a simple way to compile with the other libc (wherever is default,
I'll still need to compile some programs with both)?
I'm using what once was slack 3.5 :)...

I'm trying to make the switch from Win95 to Linux.
I do like to listen to certain RealAudio sites, however, and the
player available for Linux on the Real Audio website is only version
5. Unfortunately, some of the sites seem to be made specifically for
the new G2 player format.
Are there any players out there that can recognize the G2 format?

Mount your win98 drive as a vfat filesystem as in the following example:
mount -t vfat /dev/hda1 /mnt/win98
In the above, /dev/hda1 is your C: drive. You need to create the mount directory
(/mnt/win98) first. After you have mounted it, you can simply use the cp command as
someone else stated previously.
Good luck,
