Check out the WINSUCK machine! WINSUCK seems to require an encrypted password for
the printer which comes in clear form from samba. You should read
the samba docs concerning enryption and such stuff. There it is described
how to change the WINSUCK registry. After changing it the machine
should print (maybe you have to give a donation to Billy Boy first :)) ).

Does this mean I simply put 'exec gnome-sessions' and that is that? What
about the .wm_style ?

Hello out there.
Sorry if this question have been asked already or often. I am running RedHat
v5.1 and I am trying to set it up to print to a Lexmark Optra C printer. The
printer is PostScript and it has an ethernet card with an IP number. All the
Mac and Windows computers print directly to the IP and I want to try this to
Linux. I looked at the Printing Howto, but found it too confusing. Any help or
pointers on how to do this will be greatly appreciated.
Thanks in advance,

OK, I've convinced my company to give Linux a go for one more task
(I'm slowly working Linux into all the corners of our operation) -
I've told them that I can set up a single machine that can master 2 or
3 discs at once. I've got it set up and that part of it is working OK
(yes, I've applied the sg malloc patch).
The problem I'm having is with mkisofs - our CD staging area is on a
Novell server, and mkisofs doesn't like it. I type something like:
mkisofs -o something.iso /novell/server/cdimage/
and it just dumps immediately and tells me:
Directory loop - fatal goof (./dirname 5 24134164)
I've looked at the source and determined that it's using the INODE of
the directory to create a hash; I guess it's trying to build a quick
way to detect loops without having to unroll all the symlinks, etc.
The problem is that I don't think that a Novell server has Inodes, at
least not that are visible to the Linux box. Maybe it just reports
one INODE for everything? I don't know.
For now, I'm copying the entire directory over to a local area, then
doing mkisofs on that. It works, but I don't like it.
This is a great opportunity for me to demonstrate something really
cool and important to the company, that NT just can't do (that I know
of) and Linux doesn't have any trouble with.
Any suggestions, anyone? I'll try to check here in the newsgroup for
answers, but I'd appreciate an email copy. Thanks.

Ok, I think I get the jist of these things now, but what is this
rr_moved directory and is it "ok"(tm) to use -D switch with mkisofs and
have most systems be able to read it? See if I don't use -D then all
sorts of files that somehow end up in rr_moved get all bent (a lot of
them with similar names) and something breaks and mkisofs segfaluts.
Funny thing is, I get part of an iso9660 image though I never got any of
the messages saying it was actually creating one...you know "%10
done...estimated completion 06:00:00 April 30" and it is a very large
image.

Re-read the Printing-HOWTO. In particular, look at:
"To print to another machine, you make an /etc/printcap entry like this:
# REMOTE djet500
lp|dj|deskjet:\
:sd=/var/spool/lpd/dj:\
:rm=machine.out.there.com:\
:rp=printername:\
:lp=/dev/null:\
:sh:
Note that there is still a spool directory on the local machine managed by
lpd. If the remote machine is busy or offline, print jobs from the local
machine wait in the spool area until they can be sent. "
Printing to another machine is basically the same as printing to a printer
with an IP address. You need an entry like this in your /etc/printcap
file. You may be thinking, "Okay, I can print to a hostname via
rm=printer.hostname, but how do I make that hostname map to an IP
address?" Easy. UNIX (and therefore Linux) does local resolution. Put
something like the following in your /etc/hosts file:
xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx printer.hostname printer
...where the x's represent the IP address.
Now, when lpd sends the job to printer.hostname, it will send it to
xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx which is what you want.

I would like to have the long filenames work in linux AND win95. I know
Joliet will do it for win95, but I see other CDs accomplishing it on
iso9660...ie the Debain CD.
Slackware CD seems to use the RR extenstion to give linux the long
names, and uses the 8.3 in win95, but Debian just has long names in both
(package.this.that.deb) I managed it with my website using the -l
switch, but then I tried to make a CD of XFree86 source and it did not
work so well. I also had to use the -D switch or mkisofs segfaults.

I had problems with the Sirge DX under RH5.1, so ended up getting a different
model, that was listed as being supported, at a computer fair. Got it up and
running fine, but when I tried to install 5.2, after having problems with the
upgrade, it wouldn't configure or detect my card properly. Eventually I
reinstalled 5.1 and was able to get the upgrade to work.
I kinda suspect a problem with the new driver, which supposedly supports all
the Sirge models, including the DX.

That's why I used the terms I did: Joliet does not write a new
filesystem, per se. It merely writes an alternative index to the same
filesystem.
If you have, say, 600M worth of files to write to a CD, this can be an
important distinction. If you use mkisofs's option to build both
Joliet and Rockridge extensions, the media will be readable as iso9660
(though expect some interesting filenames if the filenames are similar
since they'll be mashed a bit), Rockridge and Joliet. The only thing
that is different is that Joliet and Rockridge add alternative indexes
to the same files.
HFS is a different beast altogether: it's not an extension to iso9660,
but a replacement for it. So to put 600M worth of files in both iso9660
(which would include Rockridge/Joliet) and HFS would take two CDs. (Or
the common trick amongst game companies, a multi-session CD with HFS
used for the portion of the disk with the game itself, and a seperate
session with the Windows version of the game and the data files.)

Great idea. You do understand that without some sort of DoJ oversight

took Microsoft to change the binary format and rush the New And Improved

You *might* be able to get away with Corel WordPerfect, by virtue of your
32M memory. But, I'd push you more toward SIAG's Pathetic Write if you
want GUI wordprocessing. It's not fancy, but, it's cheap on resources.
Other avenues you could look at, of course, being text-edited files which
are then `rendered` into more fancy fonted docs.. eg, Tex/Latex, HTML,
etc. Heck, you could even start learning how to write in Postscript
and be one of the coolest geeks on the block! :)

I think Arkeia backup does what you want. You simply install a backup
server on your linux box and clients on all other machines that you want
to backup. These can be almost any platform. I haven't used it yet, but I
am evaluation Arkeia in the comming weeks as a solution here. We have a
Linux server, some workstations (W95/NT and Linux) and a couple of HP Unix
machines. Arkeia is capable of handling all this platforms.
Have a look at http://www.arkeia.com

It's not that old.
You have 2.0.34, 2.0.35, 2.0.36,2.0.37 then 2.2.0, 2.2.1,...,2.2.6. (The
2.1.x versions are development versions only, not stable releases).
You should upgrade if you need the changes or if you want to be up to date
with the new developments.
I advise you to get the kernel source and read the Documentation/CHANGES
file to know where to start.
And you can check also http://www.linuxhq.com and their Changes and Upgrade

Subject: portable linux
I am thinking that a Linux system on a CDROM would be pretty cool. So,
I have thought about how I might be able to do this.
I figure I need to be able to recompile the kernel and edit varios files
in /etc so I think booting from a floppy would be the best. Then I
would mount the CDROM as /usr probably and then there would need to be
some other place for the /home directory....probably a loopback file or
zip drive maybe.
I looked at the 1 floppy linux distros and I guess most seem to load
into the ramdisk which first off I don't know that that would be
necissary though it would be nice to be able to use the floppy drive,
and I don't know how to do it....I don't see a howto on my disk or at
ldp.
Anyone got some pointers to places I can find the info I need? Anyone
done this before?
