The main reason why just about all the software and high-technology items
originate from the U.S. is we are free.

That's the bottom line.

Yet when you get into a discussion about Microsoft and it's monopolistic
powers, the definition of the U.S. get's blurred.

I hope you didn't use it on the SAT then.

(And if we did institute literacy tests for voting, that could have
cost you your "right" right there.)

What happens if part of the hardware of the computer is replaced by
a different component? E.g. suppose someone decides that s/he wants
to have the fancy new video card or whatever?

Sorry to disagree, but Steve is correct. See

Tanenbaum himself states: I was born in New York and grew up in White
Plains, NY. I went to Amsterdam as a postdoc and have sort hung around
ever since.

So he _was_ indeed a native born American and didn't move out until his
post-doc years.

Being smug usually requires a little research. ;-)

Sour grapes? You sound like your guy didn't get in. ;-)

Your vote does indeed count, there are just particular counting rules in
the electorate system which everyone doesn't seem to mind until an issue
like the last one comes up.

If you don't think your vote counts, then it shouldn't bother you to not
vote next time around while I go ahead and vote because that's what I
want to do.

You're in a non-graphical runlevel, where everything is started except
X. You can start up your preferred desktop environment by logging in
and entering "startx", or you can edit /etc/inittab and look for a line
that says something like

id:2:initdefault

Then change the number to 3 (SuSE) or 5 (RedHat and derived). No need
to reboot, you think you're running 'Doze here? "init 3" or "init 5" as
root will kick X into gear then and you can do your thing.

OK...
Type on the commandline:

   <CTRL v> ESC)U

that is; hold down the controll key while typing the letter v;
then press the escape key; then ) and then capital U.

Ignore the complaints about "command not found". :-)
This sets the "second char set" to the PC char set.

Now you can switch to it with <CTRL N>.
Same procedure: ctrl v capital N.

To switch back to iso-latin 1:
   <CTRL O>

This works only at the console, not in an xterm.
It is possible to do the switching from a script.
Haven't tried from a C-program, but should work also.

The -F option only installs the package if a lower level package is
already
installed.

Mandrake 5.3 sounds old, considering it's currently at 7.2. If the 6.0
package is a Mandrake package, you might get away with it. But the
versions
of dependent packages may not be sufficient to permit that.

> Can I quickly, easily remove an rpm if something doesn't work right

If the dependencies are not met, it won't install, so no worry about
removing it.
If something "installs", then "rpm -e <pkgname>" will remove it.

It sounds like you don't have the "make" program installed on GoLinux
or Easy Linux.

In the SuSE case, you may not have "kernel-sources" installed, perhaps
only "kernel-headers". In which case the Makefile for kernel
compilation
is not present, and make will not find the menuconfig target/rule.

You did
alias cdl='cd;ls'
but how does this alias process a variable as in
cdl mydir?
I do something like
alias cdl='cd \*!;ls'
but all my crib sheets are at work. Give it a try. The
backward slash is an escape character. Don't let the purists
get you down. I do stuff like this all the time with the c-shell.
And there's nothing wrong with using the c-shell for your command
line work. On the other hand, I do all my scripting with Bourne
shell if I can. Then I use KornShell if I need more. And I use
Perl scripts as a last resort (oh, quit gasping, I have not blasphemed).

Good luck.

I am adding a tape drive to an existing AHA-1542 SCSI controller. I have

my tape drive. I have tried:
