Date: Mon, 26 Apr 1999 14:33:50 GMT
I have problems with Gnome under SuSE 6.
I installed all the right Linux Packages, but when I start the now configured
X session I have this error:
/opt/gnome/lib/libgnomeui.so.32: undefined symbol:
gtk_item_factory_add_foreign
This prevent the Gmc file manager to load and I'm also unable to start many
other applications.
Sometimes I also have an error like Subshell.c error.
I reinstalled the rpms many times, but nothing happen!!!
What can I do, where's the problem?
Thankx in advance, au revoir

This may not be the best solution, but I just set customized-hdrs to
"From: [EMAIL PROTECTED]" and pine replaces the from header that it would
otherwise have included. Pine then doesn't realize that sent mail items
are actually from you, but other than that it works out fine.

Using Mozilla from 19981001 on Debian 2.1.
I can't type the name of a page in the URL slot. Or at least, I can,
but it's ignored. The box is grey, too, so I presume something is not
set up right.
I can do File/Open and type any URL I want. What magic am I missing ?
And, where is the FM for this sort of thing so I can RTFM ?

Hi all,
I have Linux Mandrake 5.3 (kernel 2.0.36).
I have set the DNS numbers of my provider in Kppp's menu;
nevertheless, during the connection to my provider Kppp
isn't able to find the DNS server. For example, Netscape
blocks up itself with the message: "looking up host: ...".
Who can help me?
I thank you in advance.

Hi,
One thing you might try is "xhost +" instead of with the machine name.
That should allow any client to connect from any host. I'm not sure if
it'll work but you should definitely try it.

Hi !
Have you ever used Java ?? I think not...at least not really...otherwise
you wouldn't write such BS...
If you look around the internet and in the news...all you see is
Java...what do you think...everyone gone stupid...wanting to slow down
their computer ?? I don't think so. They are just weighing the pros and
cons...
The GUI itself isn't the fastest around...but that depends on the
programming style as well...I have seen GUIs that were not much slower
as others...but the backend is fast...I have written programs in C and
JAVA and the JAVA versions were not slower as the C version...some even
faster...
And on the server side...you don't need JAVA for all things you do...I
use servlets to access the underlying databases...and nobody has ever
complained about speed...
The great advantages of JAVA are that I can write a program on say a
Linux machine and use it without recompiling on OS/2, Windows, Solaris,
Dec Unix and maybe on your fridge or your microwave in the future...no
prob at all...the sources as well as the classes are not big at all
And if you ever have tried to hassle with memory management in
C/C++...it*'s awful...you spend hours or days to find the memory
leak...with JAVA you don't care about that...and you don't need to...
Well...to make that short...JAVA might not be the language for all...but
it is surely not dead...

You can reposition any window by dragging it with the left=20
mouse-button while pressing the Alt-key. You don=B4t have to see the=20
title bar for that, just start dragging from anywhere in the window.

Not clear what you mean. With NS under linux you don't download
headers; you even cant. So you must have done something else.
Because it's a multitasking / network system. it is assumed you have
an own newsserver. Therefore with NS (and all other Linux
newsreaders) you get the complete message. Have another look at the
way NS for Linux works and you will find its way better then any
other operating system.

Howdy all -
I posted this once with no responses, so I'm trying again. If it is an RTFM
thing, can someone please tell me which FM to R?
I have Samba 2.0.3 running like a champ on a dual PPro 200, 128 MB RAM,
running Slackware 3.6, kernel 2.2.5. Running like a champ as far as file
sharing is concerned, that is. Printing is another matter. I have an HP
Deskjet 1000c hanging off the parallel port for use via Samba for a bunch of
WinNT and Win9x machines. I set up a raw printer in /etc/printcap, the line
looks like this:
dj1000|DeskJet 1000c:sh:lp=/dev/lp0:sd=/var/spool/lpd/dj1000
the printing section in smb.conf looks like this:
[printers]
comment = All Printers
path = /usr/spool/samba
print ok = Yes
The print jobs make it, and start coming out the printer, but where ink
stops getting laid on paper, the form stops. I guess I need a form feed. I
tried making my printcap look like this:
dj1000|DeskJet 1000c:sh:lp=/dev/lp0:sd=/var/spool/lpd/dj1000:mx#0:ff=\f
which should force a form feed, and set no limit on the max print size.
This didn't work. How do I force a form feed after the last page? Is it a
Samba thing, a WinNT print driver thing, or a Linux thing?
Thanks!

Just a couple of sanity checks...
1. While dialed up, verify that KPPP has actually put the DNS entry into place:
cat /etc/resolv.conf
2. Ping the DNS server to ensure that you can reach it.

You probably don't want to do this: it allows any client to connect
from any host. That means that, if I was feeling generous, I could go
off and xlock your display (with my password) because I felt like it.
I could do other worse things if I were feeling less generous. You
probably want to use some variant of xauth, or perhaps ssh; see the
Remote-X-Apps mini-HOWTO for more details.

Heheh, ok then,.....do it in Java without AWT or Swing. Java is a
language, Perl is a language. See Perl doesn't come with a class
library (I don't think anyway, maybe it does) and Java does. Without
that Object API Java would be garbage,...useless. If your going to
start throwing tools away to make a point, then there it is.

Well, if you think AWT is a complete distribution then I guess there
isn't much else to say.

Wrote a program once in Java that had to hunt through a 5000 entry (6
lines per entry) for a specific query. I used Perl to create that
database from merged text files which were made to be human readable,
not for machines. The Perl script was about 20 lines if, and the java
class required to do a line by line search was about equal. The perl
script was doing more, but thats besides the point because it was also
very much faster.
The java program had to use a seperate key file which I read into memory
that it used to find each entry's data. Luckily I only needed to search
by only one of the feilds or this would have been more imposig to create
(7 files instead of 2 and such)
Also, the memory residence of Java is just plain out of hand. I
honestly don't see how server admins can find this system a viable
platform for development, but whatever.
And with Swing, well there is really no point in using java at all with
swing because it makes a P200 act like a 386.

Subject: Random Character Swapping ??? Help!

Well, this may or may not be Linux related... but it's my best guess.
Background:
Pentium 90 running RH5.1 is my firewall masq. machine forone other win98
machine, using 10BT. Linux is connected using ADSL. Linux box has no
monitor and is for the most part administered remotely from the win98
machine or in some occasions from outside.
Problem:
In accessing from the win98 machine and also from outside via telnet, I
am seeing somewhat random (unpredictable, but repeatable) character
swapping. For example, read carefully the results of two consecutive
ping commands:

Why does this happen?
Also, possibly related, 'w' doesn't always

that I know to be running (like the one originating the 'w' command!)
For example:
[root@hoth log]# w

Oh, and this is weird... I just tried 'w' two more times, once resulting
in a seg. fault, and the second time giving me this:
[root@hoth log]# w

i run netscape on a k6-2 300mhz and 32meg ram connecting to ISP @28.8 and
netscape blazes. I always thought MSIE was faster than netscape in windows,
but netscape thru linux makes MSIE look like a piece. My 2 cents.

Did RedHat invent .Xclients ?
It is not mentioned in any of the X-windows manual I looked at,
and there is no man entry for it (under RedHat-5.2).
What exactly is the advantage over .xinitrc and .xsession ?
Was there any need to introduce yet another dot file ?

Not all of this is entirely true.

64kb/s is enough bandwidth for one telephone quality voice transmission,
even just PCM coded, possibly at most 16 bits per sample. You could get
away with 8 bits even.

This is all true, however, the way speech is parameterized and processed
in resynthesised in internet phone systems means that lost packets now
and then will not degrade the transmission much as far as your ear is
concerned.
We use UDP specifically because of it's speed. Of course, with UDP you
don't get resent packets, but in speech coding what good is resending a
packet that's already lost and therefore increasing the delay in output
if it doesn't make much difference perceptually anyway?

A buffer does help, but because of the delay aspect, it is not the main
draw card of an internet phone. The way the speech is repesented in
*information terms*, is the key to success. There is a lot of redundancy
in a speech signal.

That's not so important anyway for the same reasons above.

You need to understand that a speech coder (the guts of an internet
phone) will produce data for transmission which has the reduncancies of
the speech signal removed (or at least as much as possible). Therefore
you cannot expect to compress the speech data one iota. This is all
based in information theory. The only overhead worth worrying about
after speech paramterization is the header.
Typical coding rates for speech are from about 1200 bits/s upward. And
that is for tried and tested techniques. Research is heading toward 800
bits/s now. But the point is 1200-2400 bit/s is a typical, moderate
figure.

Of course it is possible. I personally have used an internet phone over
a 56kb/s modem and the internet. People use these things all the time
now -- with reasonable speech quality.
