After playing around with it some more, and trying various suggestions
from the group, I finally discovered the cause of my problem.

I ran emacs using xtrace and the first error I encountered was that it
could not open the /etc/resolv.conf file because of permission problems.
When I had reloaded my system I forgot to give user read permissions
to this file. So when the X server tried to find where my box was to
open
the display it couldn't resolve where it was and finally timed out.

While changing the permissions on this file solved the problem, the
bigger
issue I have is why does a networking file bug cause such grief for
a local program. It seems that there ought to be a better way of setting
this
up rather than requiring a users networking environment to be
stable before X windows is usable.

Is it just the IP address or the name that changes? If it's just the
IP address, and the name stays the same, then configure Netscape with
the *name* of the proxy server, not the IP address.

If the name changes each time, well, how do you find out what to ping?

It may well be that you have a misconfigured DNS resolver ...

Well, I still want to be able to paste so I can't simply do away with the
function altogether. For some quirky reason XFree86 isn't able to retain
three button emulation (by clicking the left and right buttons simulatenously)
AND be able to use the wheel at the same time. That would be the ideal
solution.

"user servicable" usually means nice, neat screwdriver adjustments. By
adjust,
I mean use pliers, hammer, file, glue, shims, blowtorch, etc to make the
#%@
thing work the way _you_ think it should. :-)

(It'd probably be easier to look into buying a new mouse. )

Hi there!

When i start a program using svgalib as a normal user, it says:

  svgalib: Cannot get I/O permissions.

As root there is no problem, but it must also work as normal users because
it DID work some time ago but then suddenly no more. Perhaps my SuSEConfig
script changed some file permission. I compiled and installed svgalib once
more (as root) but there is again this error message. So what's going on
here? This time no permissions were changed ...

I was giving an extreme example to illustrate how insignificant it is to
compare the merits of one OS to another because of the ethics of a few
people. Of course I care for my life and the life of innocent people but as
far as whether Windows is better than Linux or vice versa is concerned, it's
completely irrelevant. I don't even have that message anymore. You must be
a sick sociopath yourself if you would keep all your unpleasant messages
archived away. Not to mention that you are the one swearing here. I
explained this to you in great detail (not to mention you didn't want to
quote it here) and I am not going to repeat it.

If there is anything you do well, it's taking something someone said and
presenting it completely out of context to take a cheap shot. Considering
that you couldn't continue to respond in the old thread 2 months ago, I
think you're kind of late to try and continue to win the argument. I

present (/usr/src/linux/drivers/net/rtl8139.c) but there
appears to be no easy way to include it when compiling. Is
there a work-around?

The 2nd Edition? If you can only buy one book, get one of those huge
compilations of Linux Documentation Project Guides and HOWTOs. It's
all on line, but the hardcopy is SO much easier to read, and the index
is a great help.

See VNC at http://www.orl.co.uk/vnc . You start an Xvnc on the

remote the X server display. Then use a VNC client on a Microsoft

VNC clients for Unix, Java, and other platforms are also available.
A VNC server to allow a remote VNC client to control a Microsoft

mgetty has a few parts to it in the Debian distrobution, I am sure

Thanks for the info, this looks like exactly what I need!

However, I have run into a minor stumbling block. I have the server
software running on the server, but it is refusing connections from the viewer
software. Now, my predecessor here was real tight on security... and almost
all basic TCP/IP functions are set to non-standard port number (for example,
to telnet into our server... you have to specify the port we use, it's not
23). I am wondering if this is the problem here... do you by chance know what
port number the server is trying to work with by default (or am I off on a
wild goose chase here? <smile>)

Right. While X is running, type ctrl-alt-f1 (assuming normal startup) to
get you back to the startup console and look at the stuff X spewed out.

If you can't see it all, even by back-scrolling with, say, shift-page-up,
the kill X and restart it like "startx | tee /var/tmp/x-server-dump"
and then look at that file.

Sounds like you need to mess with your XF86Config file. The only thing
I can thing of right now is that some things (what?) can cause some
video memory to be reserved for bit-blting or something which might
not leave enough left over for normal 256 color whatever resolution.
(But I'd think 640x480 would be OK?) You sure you got that -bpp8
right? It doesn't look right to my fuzzy memory.

On my 486 BIOS setup there is an option to set "16MB boundary access" (or
something like that) the options are "normal" (works) "non-local" (limits
RAM <=16MB)
