I think the tuning Peter is alluding to is the "make up the numbers in
your own head" kind of tuning. The advantage of that kind of tuning is
that you don't have to bother with the boring things like actually
validating the results, so you get done much more quickly, and the
numbers are better too.

To elaborate a bit:
On the Win95 box go to Control Panel -> Network
There you should find something like:
TCP/IP -> 3C509B-or-whatever-ethernetcard-you-have
if not go to Add -> protocols -> Microsoft -> TCP/IP
The select the line mentioned above and click Properties.
Under advanced you should activate 'default' to make this
the default protocol, and I think you should put the IP
address of your Linux-machine's ethernet card in the gateway
section (but I'm not sure if this is necessary).
Then, as Fred said, you should enable IP-Masquerading on your
Linux machine.
Kind regards,

I'm still fairly new to Linux, so I'm not sure where to look for what
exactly is running, but I have RedHat 6.0 with /etc/inittab set to level
5 to run X automatically, which presents me with a blue screen with the
RedHat guy and RedHat at the top, and a login dialog. I assume it's
GNOME's 'xdm'.
There is an options button, which you can choose which WM you enter but
unfortunately also gives the option to Shutdown and Halt, requiring *NO*
password at all!
Is there a way to disable this, or to prompt for the root password? I
imagine this program is running suid root and thus not needing a
password to shutdown, but I would rather prefer it did. :) Not that
anyone is at my apartment often. (Speaking of which, I disabled CTRL
ALT DEL so my wife would stop rebooting to hang up the moden (DOH!) so
now I guess she just turns the power off! I gotta give up on diald,
it's too persistant..)

The cdu31a driver does not autoprobe. The documentation and the source

Exactly how did you specify those options? To the best of my memory
(and it has been quite a while) you need to do it something like:
cdu31a_port=....
where the "...." is the values you wish to specify.
Another possibility is, if your cdu33A is anything like the one cdu33a
and the two cdu31a drives I used to have, it doesn't work worth a darn
anyway. I found them to be so unreliable I finally took 'em out and
put 'em in the trash can a few months ago cause it wasn't worth wasting
shelf space on them.

Boot your system and read /etc/lilo.conf . If it accurately
describes your setup, run /sbin/lilo .
Otherwise, keep using the boot floppy until you're sure you can
set LILO up correctly.

And add to that, By installing the upgraded kernel package you will
remove the old kernel files. Therefore you'll need to adjust the
lilo.conf file to refer to the new kernel file in the /boot directory,
and, if you boot from a scsi disk, you'll also need to build a new initrd
with mkinitrd command. Then run the lilo command as usual. Failure to
do so might result in an unbootable system.

My guess is that su is telling you it succeeded, not that the command it
executed did. I've run into a similar thing with rsh (not limited to linux,
btw). The status returned indicates whether rsh succeeded, not whether the
remote command did or not. It makes sense in a perberse sort of way.

That is just about as far as I got (but thanks for the help anyway).
What I hoped to achive is to do this _without_ downloading the
kernel-2.2.5
package, since I already have a 2.2 kernel (compiled from the source
package).
Anybody have a clue why the kernel-source package is not distributed as
a SRPM ?
Is it because it needs configuring before building ?

And then nothing, the client doesn't do anything, tftp doesn't start,
and the boot sequence stops there...
My /etc/bootptab must be correct (i've read the man a hundred times...)
WHAT IS WRONG ????
By the way, arp gives the following output: (in case it helps you)
Address HWtype HWaddress Flags Iface
yyy.yyy.yyy.yyy (incomplete) eth0
Please, if you have any idea about what is wrong, reply to the email
address (preferably)
Thanks in advance,
