Get rid of kppp. I still do not know why people use it-- it seems to
cause more problems than it is worth.

Just write a script to give your ISP what it wants. See
axion.physics.ubc.ca/ppp-linux.html
for instructions as to how to do it.

Subject: Q. re automated download tools
Date: Fri, 04 Jun 1999 18:19:52 GMT

Hi there.

I'm wondering about automatic download tools which I can set up to
search and fetch files.

Ideally, what I want to do is this:

  keep my PC running

at a specified time dial out to ISP
confirm for good ISP connection // with hang-up and retry a number
of times

      for each type of search
            access a given web page
run a query (fill in a search box & hit RETURN)
            detect the search return
grab a "snap-shot" of the results page

for each link on the results page
check against a database to see if it's already
downloaded
                  if not, download the item

            next link on page
      next type of search

check to see if any downloads still in progress OR 10 min timeout

      drop the connection to ISP

type of thing.

HowdoIdothat??

Thanks

Subject: how to print duplex via lpr to network printer
Date: Fri, 04 Jun 1999 19:22:47 GMT

I have an HP LaserJet 4000N printer installed on a network with its
own IP address. I can print to it from my RedHat 6.0 machine just
fine, except I can't get duplex mode. The printer supports duplex
since NT machines print duplex just fine. How do you set up a
printcap entry to do duplex mode?? Or is it more complicated that
that?

Thanks for any help.

ANNOUNCE: 4th June 1999

           JASSPA distribution of MicroEmacs '99
                     New Beta available

     * Improved font support. UNIX and MS-Window platforms
provide improved font support. Decoupling of the Font
box characters enables ANSI and OEM fonts to be
supported on windows, within the UNIX domain more
fixed fonts may be selected even if they do not
       support box drawing characters.

     * Multi-language support. Improved support of foreign
languages through better support of the ISO-Latin
character set. All dictionaries are defined in terms
of ISO-Latin character sets. Macros provide
conversion of MS-DOS OEM <=> ISO-Latin. Added support
for French, German, Portuguese and Spanish.

     * Much improved user-setup dialog with configuration
       options for most used features.

     * Extended undo, with undo past last save and redo
       capability.

     * Ipipe shell windows stabilized and made more robust.

     * The Microsoft Windows environments support an
       interactive shell window using Cygwin.

     * Introduction of 'local variables' and 'macro specific
variables' into the macro language. Improves
readability of the macro language and tightens the
       scope of variables.

     * Reorganization of the color schemes in an attempt to
unify the color scheme definitions. Creation of a
       color scheme editor

     * Support for Client/Server interface to allow external
programs to communication to MicroEmacs, also allows
re-use of the same editor with the '-o' command line
       option.

     * Minor bug fixes in all areas, Win32s support for
Microsoft Win3.x environments. Additional support for
more file types and extended documentation.

Leave the 8bpp in there and add the other color depths/specs to XF86Config.
Then in .xserverrc add the command/commandline to get higher depth.

bugfree:~$ cat .xserverrc
exec X -bpp 16
bugfree:~$

You can aslo do this on a system wide basis, I think, by editing xserverrc
in one of the XF86 directories.

Good luck,

You could use lynx -dump, along with perl. From command line, something
like:

# lynx -dump http://www.cnn.com/WORLD/europe/9906/04/kosovo.peace.02| \
perl -ne'if(/script:vod/){s#.*/#http://www.cnn.com/blahblahblah/#;\
s/html.*/ram/;print}'

This prints out some URLs, but maybe not exactly what you're looking
for, as I didn't find exactly what you're talking about, the headline
news ram stream... If you tell me exactly, maybe I could hone it down
to the specific URL; probably each day it changes according to the
date, etc..

How many colours is your X server set at? If it's 8-bpp or less, that
might just be the problem. The same thing had me wondering and confused
for a while.

Yes, I posted this question a couple of months ago, didn't get an
answer, but I've since managed to find a fix to the problem.

I upgraded to the latest beta versions of trn and leafnode, and the
problem went away. You can get them here:

leafnode-1.10b2 -- ftp://wpxx02.toxi.uni-wuerzburg.de/pub/
trn4.0-test72 -- ftp://ftp.clari.net/private/trn

I'm using trn and leafnode to post this response, and they're working
just fine.

Hope this helps!

According to the XFree86 docs the wheel is interpreted as a z-axis
movement. Since not many programs understand the z-axis it's a bit
useless. Bear in mind this is only what I remember reading -- I don't
have ne of these mice.

When I ran 5.2 (and 6.0 now too) I would get the same
error. I just did a manuel configuration and accepted
the default values for irq and mem addresses. Then
tested. I think after the error it will prompt you for
manual configuration. Email me and let me know. Im
running the same sound card and did run 5.2.

Hello all,

I'm a newbie on Linux, I use the "cat" command to view the file of
"/proc/interrupts" and list as follow:

                   CPU0
  0: 800739 XT-PIC timer
  1: 2306 XT-PIC keyboard

 15: 5 XT-PIC ide1
NMI: 0

As the above, the Int 3 and 4 is not enable for Serial device,
therefore, I use the "setserial /dev/ttys0 irq3" to enable this device, but
the console will prompt an error message "/dev/ttys0: Input/Output error".

Free Memory is a Bad Thing(tm). If there isn't anything in it, what the
hell good is it doing you? Linux is very smart this way. If there are bits
of programs that haven't been used in a long time, while there is lots of
disk access that could be cached, it just makes sense to swap those bits out
and cache more disk.

The simple english word "free" has a meaning very different
than the formalized "Free Software" as defined by RMS and
his crony, and I suspect the OED will honor that distinction
for many decades to come.

If you're saying that folks who post to the linux newsgroups

Have you installed the KDE libraries?

Sounds like very nearly what I've come up with, except
that instead of putting all this stuff under /usr/local, I've
put it under /home/misc. But according to the folks who
make up standards, at
  http://www.pathname.com/fhs/2.0/fhs-toc.html
you have the correct placement. Their description is:

The /usr/local hierarchy is for use by the system administrator when
installing software locally. It needs to be safe from being overwritten
when the system software is updated. It may be used for programs
and data that are shareable amongst a group of hosts,
but not found in /usr.

Are you sure this is not the "first console" or something, from where
X has been started? Did you try pressing ALT-CTRL-F7 (this is where
X usually lives, assuming you have 6 getties running)?

Join the club. Seems that the 2.2.5 kernel might be the problem. RH 5.2
likes the Yamaha, but not 6.0. I'm trying to get some info from Red Hat about
the problem.
