Is there a linux utility that will tell me which irq's have been used?
I seem to be having trouble with sound. I am running SuSe 6.1 using the
oss sound. I can sometimes get a wav file to player using the media
player, but none of the system sounds work. After playing one or two
sounds with the media player, that too quits/hangs.
Thanks in advance!!

Hallo,
I have Wabi working on a 2.2 System (Suse6.0).
But you should consider vmware, as that will boot win32/win95/winnt too.

I saw, recently, some advice about obtaining KDE for Debian 2.1:

Si I did that ( and checked it numerous times )!

I tried apt-get update and got the following:
ERROR
http://snowcrash.tdyc.com/debian/dists/slink/rkrusty/binary-i386/Packa
ges.gz
404 not found
I tried many times, and with dselect, and received the same error each
time. Can anyone offer an explanation?
Incidentally I tried to post this to the linux.debian.users group but
the posting was refused.

Wheels work fine. That's what I'd recommend: a PS/2 mouse with a
wheel. I have a Logitech Pilot+ mouse, which feels nice to use; I
imagine the Microsoft equivalent works just as well. Both are pretty
cheap (double the price of a cheapo 3-button mouse, but probably worth
the minimal extra).

Just logging in as root is a bad idea, though-- you don't want to be going on the
internet as root! Your system is too vulnerable that way, and your ISP can even
change your hostname and domain settings just by assigning a dynamic IP address to
you when you log on.
My solution was to create a modem group (called 'modem'), and assign any users I
wanted to have access to the modem to that group (as a secondary group membership)
Linuxconf is the easiest way to do this (in user accounts section). Then, also as
root, open a terminal window and chmod the pppd daemon to setuid the modem group:
chmod +s :modem /usr/sbin/pppd
This command changes the pppd daemon to setuid :modem (which lets anyone in the
modem group use it)
You also need to change the group ownership of your modem device:
chgrp :modem /dev/modem
-or-
chgrp :modem /dev/ttyS1 (this would be COM2, ttyS0 is COM1, ttyS2 is COM3, etc.)
Change the group for whichever device you specify for your modem in ppp.
Good Luck!

On Slackware, rpm won't be able to take care of dependencies. There's a
command-line switch, I think, that will force it to install without
updating dependencies, but I forget what it is (you can check the man
page). You'll be better off on Slack if you use rpm2tgz to convert
.rpm's to .tgz's, then just use the usual installpkg.

I agree. Stop using kppp. It's just a wrapper for
ppp scripts. Which is what this web site helps

I got alot of help from this website and I was
able to write my own ppp scripts that worked best

Hi,
If you have a Soundpro chip on it you could try the mini howto on my site.
It contains some c code which should make it work with the regular cdplayers.

Prodigy isn't too shabby. They don't support _explicitly_ Linux, but if
you ask on their newsgroup (prodigynet.help.tech.connectivity), there's
a guy from their tech support that'll give you indications. It's
straightforward PAP, BTW. I wasn't given a shell account, though.

: Probably, that's more than enough for /usr.
It certainly is. I usually have 256MB.

Subject: Playing audio cd's doesn't work
Date: 5 Jun 1999 13:57:20 GMT
Hello,
I have never been able to play audio cd's on my Linux pc. After
installing SuSE 6.1 I have tried once more. I installed the OSS
commercial package and ran the install script. After running soundon
I can play audio sounds with the play program that comes with OSS.
However whenever I run a cd play (have tried xmcd and kscd) nothing
comes out of the speakers. Both cd players see the cd and I can move
from track to track and see the timer increasing but no sound. No error
messages are reported. My pc is an old 133MHz Pentium (non-MMX) and the
soundcard is an SB16 PnP. I have no sound configured in the kernel,
2.2.7. Any help gratefully appreciated.
Regards,
Roy

How appropriate a name for GNU'ists, who apparently are not
aware of meaningful literature such as Huxley's novel of
name "Brave New World" which GNU is trying to ape.
Those who seriously believe in the socialist future espoused
by leftwing enthusiasts supporting GNU's "free" software
(read: supported by heavy taxes for do-nothing leftist
university gnomes), should read this novel.

Hello
I have never been able to get CHAT to establish a connection with my
internet service provider. My modem works and I have been able to use
KPPD to create network connection, but in order to install LINUX by
way of the internet, after the minimal installation, on a new system I
would very much enjoy being able to get CHAT to dial the number for
me.
I have copied some of the basic scripts shown in the man pages, but
nothing works. I don't think the modem is even accessed. Help with
about the use of CHAT would be greatly appreciated.

Subject: Mounting an HPFS partition
Date: Sat, 5 Jun 1999 10:47:50 -0400
I tried to mount a HPFS partition on mf HD
I used this command
mkdir /hpfs
mount -t hpfs /dev/hda6 /hpfs
and I got this error
mount: wrong fs type, bad option, bad superblock on /dev/hda6,
or too many mounted file systems
My question is this: What did I do wrong?
Thanks
