You are right, at first vi (and its clones / variants) are not a lot of
fun. So what? They are not meant to replace anything fancy ... they are
meant to be down & dirty answers to the problem of how to edit. At that
level they work just fine. Sheesh ... no one compares "editor" to
notepad, much less Write or Word, do they? Vi is "editor" in the Linux
world. Get over it.

Does anybody know of any software or how to set up existing standard
Linux software to send notification of new mail to a third party without
actually sending its content? This would be quite useful for those who
rarely check their mail to have a third person notify them of mail
receipt without compromising any privacy.

It doesn't. But, unless things are really bad, you can switch to
another virtual terminal with <ctrl><alt><Fx> where Fx is some function
key, like F2, F3, F4 (usually you startx from virtual terminal at F1,
and it puts it out on something like F7 or F8, you want to go somewhere
in between, then, from the command line, use ps to find out what processes
are running then kill them (use kill -9 if you want to use the big hammer)
until you get satisfaction.

Implementation depends on the MTA used, but set it up to forward a copy of all
mail for that user to a chosen destination.
Whether this is ethical is another question.

With all due deference, simply running RegClean from MSFT is a big
"tweak" ... that registry file is a bugger! Doing that helps with
starting and stopping and the occaisional program that still wants to
load even though you have (properly) uninstalled it. I, also, am
'migrating' from Win95 to Linux. I installed it to learn it ... to
compare it. Once I know what I am doing, I may even hang out a shingle
to see if any money will stick to it.

Matt, mostly I disagree with you, and this time is no exception :) I
don't think anyone is "locked into" the CLI. I am certain the folks at
KDE and Gnome (among others) would give you a spirited debate on that
point. My understanding is that earlier version of KDE were nothing
special ... but I have used a fairly recent version and like it just
fine.

I have been given responsibility for creating a database of equivalent
programs. That is, programs in Linux that ~ match functionality found in
a program running under any other operating system.
This database is by no means limited to Microsoft comparisons or even to
the English language.
The list will also include programs which were written for another OS
but are known to function through an emulator running under Linux.
Please email me directly with any suggestions you may have. If possible,
please include a URL/URI/URN for documentation / download, etc. for each
software application you refer. Also, if you would be so kind, please
mention which emulator was used.

I think it improper to compare an editor with a wordproc ... especially
since the word proc isn't usually available in a version small enough to
edit a crashed computers' files.
Using the space shuttle is THE way to travel ... unless you are just
trying to get some milk before dinner gets cold.
I had to LEARN every word proc I have ever used (including, but not
limited to, WordStar, WordPerfect, Textra, Write, Word and Ami Pro) ...
and right now I am learning vi because it seems like an essential skill
for a Unix user. For a certaintity I would not want to face a student
and admit I couldn't use it at all.
Even though I am still learning to use it, vi seems like "the way to go"
when all I need to do is uncomment a line in a configuration file or
adjust my bash prompt to suit me. It also looks like a good editor for
coding ... its search & replace functions are on a par with anything I
have ever seen ... and it runs in darned little memory.

Use an install disk and at the lilo prompt try something like "linux
root=/dev/hdb1" with the proper
boot partition. This worked for me. Once running Linux, create a new boot
disk. Under Redhat Linux,
something like "mkbootdisk" works.
