The sniffit.0.3.5.rpm file, it came over as a tar file which I extracted and
compiled. There were no problems with any part of the process. Cab you offer any
advice as to what to check first?

Are you sure you killed X? I was reading this usenet item from an
xterm window on an X display, did <ctr> <ALT> <F2> and got a blank
virtual screen with a login prompt, then did <ctrl> <ALT> <F6> (or was it
F7?) and got back to my X display where I'm making this reply. Note that
I did the startx from virtual display F1 and it puts it out on a different
virtual display and switches you over. I'm running slackware 3.6 with
a 2.2.9 kernel, fvwm95 window manager, S3Virge card, not that any of
that should make a difference.

Hi, I'm stuck here.
I started having problems connecting to one of my account at Duke.
it is an ACPUB account, ac opposed to EGR account that is working.
I give their names here so you can understand the following output.

I read DNS HOWTO and used nslookup command to find out the following:

[root@localhost denis]# nslookup
Default Server: dukedns1.netcom.duke.edu
Address: 152.3.250.1

> me1.egr.duke.edu
Server: dukedns1.netcom.duke.edu
Address: 152.3.250.1

Name: me1.egr.duke.edu
Address: 152.16.101.1

> godzilla.acpub.duke.edu
Server: dukedns1.netcom.duke.edu
Address: 152.3.250.1

*** dukedns1.netcom.duke.edu can't find godzilla.acpub.duke.edu: Non-existent
host/domain

> teer14.acpub.duke.edu
Server: dukedns1.netcom.duke.edu
*** dukedns1.netcom.duke.edu can't find teer14.acpub.duke.edu: Non-existent host/domain
Address: 152.3.250.1

> set q=ns

> duke.edu.
Server: dukedns1.netcom.duke.edu
Address: 152.3.250.1

duke.edu nameserver = dukedns1.netcom.duke.edu
duke.edu nameserver = dukedns2.netcom.duke.edu
duke.edu nameserver = dukedns3.netcom.duke.edu
dukedns1.netcom.duke.edu internet address = 152.3.250.1
dukedns2.netcom.duke.edu internet address = 152.3.250.2
dukedns3.netcom.duke.edu internet address = 128.109.131.40

> acpub.duke.edu.
Server: dukedns1.netcom.duke.edu
Address: 152.3.250.1

*** dukedns1.netcom.duke.edu can't find acpub.duke.edu.: No response from server

> egr.duke.edu.
Server: dukedns1.netcom.duke.edu
Address: 152.3.250.1

egr.duke.edu nameserver = dukedns3.netcom.duke.edu
egr.duke.edu nameserver = dukedns2.netcom.duke.edu
egr.duke.edu nameserver = ee.duke.edu
dukedns3.netcom.duke.edu internet address = 128.109.131.40
dukedns2.netcom.duke.edu internet address = 152.3.250.2
ee.duke.edu internet address = 152.3.17.193
>

as you can see I can access my EGR account because the DNS server can
find egr.duke.edu. At the same time I can not access my ACPUB account
because DNS can't find acpub.duke.edu. Some people suggested that I ask
Duke network people about that, but I think there's no need becasue
from win95 I CAn access my ACPUB acount - so there's something wrong
here on my Linux system, that I can't find yet. To me all the files
that I looked at while reading DNS-HOWTO look fine, but I might be
wrong. Any ideas where these beast sits?

Thanks a lot

PS. I know the IP address of say godzilla.acpub.duke.edu (from above),
so I telneted it with telent 152.3.233.44 and it works, too

You never can move object files. You have to move entire programs.

I just downloaded and installed XFree86.3.3.3.1 and I configured my
Videocard (Stealth II S220) succesfully. Now I tried to start X windows with
the command startx, I get the following message
/usr/X11R6/bin/xinit: No such file or directory, but the file xinit does
exist in the directory /usr/X11R6/bin.

How can I solve this problem?

reported by Linux Today QLinux kernel ?

I generally have a few Xterm windows open all the time, and I just move into
one of those to do the murderous deeds. Do you mean that your mouse/KB won't
work at all, including in other windows?

Whenever I've tried to use alternate consoles I just end up killing X,
which is not what is supposed to happen.

Cheers,
Bev

The browser is not integrated with the operating system.

Upgrade to v4.60 and also install netscape-wrapper-bnl and netscape v3.04.
The latter is much smaller and more stable than the former, but
won't handle some web pages. Finally, for text, use lynx,
which is super fast and completely stable.

We could never get it to work under RH either, so we just copied over the
files from our slackware installation. Here is what the /etc/ppp/pap-secrets
file should look like:

        # Secrets for authentication using PAP...
        # client server secret IP addresses
        "yourloginname" * "yourpassword"
