You are best off with a *lot* of memory if you want to play around
with Java. It doesn't need a vastly fast processor; just almost as
much memory as an optimising C++ compiler...

Nope - wmakerconf :) Actually, I just switched from Window Maker to
Enlightenment. This is on a Pentium 75, 32MB RAM, 1MB S3 868 video card. It's
surprisingly fast.

For all that say Enlightenment is a memory hog, it uses around the same amount
of mem as Window Maker with the theme (Brushed-Metal) I am using.

I have an old 486SX25 PC just doing nothing, it is pretty poor spec with
just a 120mbHD and er, that's about it.

Would it be possible to run Linux on this, scrap the MS-DOS what was
left on it and use it as a Linux machine?

An if this is possible, would it be useable to run X-Windows on it such
as GNOME or would this just be too slow?

Thanks,
Mark.

Wouldn't it be easier to just use the isa pnp tools? Just do:

pnpdump > /etc/isapnp.conf
edit the resulting file
isapnp /etc/isapnp.conf

You don't need it, make zlilo does it if it hasn't been done yet.

        make menuconfig
make dep clean zlilo modules modules_install

is all one needs... maybe

make menuconfig dep clean zlilo modules modules_install

also works...

Linux would be great ... even better if you have another Linux system
from which to do CPU intensive things like compiles ...

As for X, you will probably find it too slow. It will run, but like
frozen syrup ... ;-)

You did not mention the available RAM... Should be more than 4 meg.

Set it up as a DNS, firewall/gateway, whatever, it will do fine.

Tuesday 8 June 1999 partisans and beginners in Free Software will gather

This gathering is free and open to the public.

The gathering runs from 6:30 pm to 9:00 pm.

We shall seek a nearby delicatessen to sit down, talk, and see

Barry Hughes and Gary Makhija demonstrate running the Free OS made of the
GNU utilities, the Linux kernel, the X Graphics Transport Layer, and

Hi, folks,

I have spread my linux on 4 different partitions, where the pathes var,
home, and usr each use
a different partition.
I now want to repartition my disk so i have only one partition with /,
/usr, /var, /home on it.
Q: How can i expand one partition? (Even if the other partition lying in
the place i want to expand the first is deleted then, but with the data
on the firs partition left)
Q: How can i copy for example this hdb5 to hdb3, including the
hardlinks, to unmount hdb5 (If i copy hdb5 to hdb3 (in a folder usr2,
for example), then unmount hdb5, remove /usr, and rename /usr2 to /usr,
the hardlinks aren't copied to?

Thnx to all who will spend their rare time to answer this.

Hi Joe,

Last Saturday I bought another 128 MB of RAM for my linux box to get a total
amount of 320 MB.
And, while doing a tape backup or fsck'ing, cache and buffers grow and grow,
leving 4-5 MB free (unused) memory. I even used 20-40 _kB_ swap space !
But you can sleep well again : Things are like they should be...
The linux kernel is flexibly using memory for buffering and caching
(BTW, could someone explain the difference to me ??), if there is a lot
available,
and giving it back to running apps if they need more memory.
While logically moving memory "from one place to another", swap space is used
to fulfill temporary tips.
It's kinda fun to run 'top' while starting a memory consuming app, e. g. a
small
console app I wrote to calculate primes using an array in memory, and to
watch the memory heaps change as needed...

Best regards

Juergen

Unfortunately, raising this (and the appropriate limit in the /proc
filesystem) gave me an unstable system. I suspect that libc would need
recompiling - stuff like the select call possibly needs a compile-time
upper bound.

I never found a way of having more than 1024 files open concurrently in
one process.

How did you managed java to work on Linux? When I'm trying to
run it just like this:
    java demo.class
while being in the same directory with demo.class, it says, that
cannot find class demo.class. What's wrong here?

I noticed some other people with the same problem in this group. One of
them found out that the umsdos-fs could be the cause of it. Indeed, I
also tried to install SO on an umsdos-partition.

I can only hope the problem will be solved when I've made enough place
on my regular linux-drives to install SO there, but nevertheless I would
like to know WHY the umsdos-fs causes this trouble and if other programs
are endangered by it as well!?

Greetings,

Vic

Is there any real need for you to be using the same account? The most
obvious solution seems to be to create a new user - that way your two
Netscapes wouldn't interfere with each other.

Try issuing the option "passive" to pppd. it might help.

however, you should find out how to issue it on your system because I do
it in KDE.

expanding a ext2 fs is not possible, as much as I know! So even if one
manages to rise the partition you can't use the free space, because
there would be no filesystem!

cd /usr
tar cf - . | (cd /newfs; tar xf - )

I'ld suggest to use some kind o backup first!

To get all data into one partition (what I really don't recommend,
it look's good to me having it spread over different partitions
like your system is today. var is changed dynamically by the system
it can grow to fill up file system --> with all on one disk it
could happen that the system won't boot any more. home on a different
disk is good for matters of backup! I used to put all my programs
that don't come with the distro into /usr/local and put this on
a different partition too!) one would copy all data to a tape for
example and than boot from floppy or cd. Repartition disk an make a
new fs. Copy everything back to disk and then take care of fstab.

That's it

Bye
        Zoran

Does your classpath include .?
