No, you're confused on what procmail does. It doesn't do that at all.

It is often invoked as the 'Local Delivery Agent' by sendmail to
actually put the mail into your mailbox (sendmail itself does not do
that and uses either /bin/mail or procmail or perhaps mail.local).

>From the man page:

Procmail should be invoked automatically over the .forward
file mechanism as soon as mail arrives. Alternatively,
when installed by a system administrator, it can be
invoked from within the mailer immediately. When invoked,
it first sets some environment variables to default val-
ues, reads the mail message from stdin until an EOF, sepa-
rates the body from the header, and then, if no command
line arguments are present, it starts to look for a file
named $HOME/.procmailrc. According to the processing
recipes in this file, the mail message that just arrived
gets distributed into the right folder (and more). If no
rcfile is found, or processing of the rcfile falls off the
end, procmail will store the mail in the default system
       mailbox.

Note that it "reads the mail message from stdin until an EOF". It's
waiting for you to type what you want to go into your mailbox, which is
a really awful way to send yourself mail.

The procmail you are running in background does precisely nothing but
wait for you to type into it. You have no reason to do that. Really.

There is a bus-mouse HOWTO. Off the top of my head though, if you
actually have a PS/2 mouse like mine rather than a genuine bus mouse
you should link /dev/mouse to /dev/psaux.

Subject: Kernel upgrade
Date: Thu, 10 Jun 1999 16:30:34 +0000

I'm trying to upgrade my monolithic kernel that came with RedHat 6.0 to
2.2.9. However, whenever I reboot with the new kernel, I alsways get a
kernel panic. This is what I do:

Unzip and untar the source in /usr/src/
make mrproper
make xconfig
make dep
make bzImage
cp /usr/scr/linux/arch/i386/boot/bzImage /boot/bzImage
edit /etc/lilo.conf so that I have my monolithic as a backup called
linux.golden the new one is linux
make modules
make modules_install
/sbin/lilo

Everything looks okaym, the kernel is not too big, but when I reboot
some of the error messages I get is that it can't find the hard drive
among other things. I can't remember all the messages since I'm at work
now and it's been a couple days sinnce I rebooted.
Does anyone have some simple instructions for upgrading from the
default redHat 2.2.5 kernel to the latest kernel? I'd like some good
instructions to see what I'm doing wrong.
I've even tried doing the following:
    cat /proc/version > /lib/modules/<version>/.rhkmvtag
as instructed in the HowTo found on
http://lwn.net/1998/1210/rhkernel.html
I've tried all sorts of possibilities, but I think my biggest hangup
right now is working with modules and making RedHat happy.
Any help would be most appreciated.

I had a similar setup (although I only had 8Mb of RAM). I only used it as
an X server though - all the clients were on a mighty 486, so netscape
didn't take quite as long to load.

Mind you, this was also using a VGA-only monitor, so everything was
rather giant - X really doesn't look nice in 640x480.

I have a 4416S on an aic-7890 controller, which when first installed,
prevented boot-up (caused the scsi-startup stuff to fail).

I ended up putting the 4416S in a different PC with an older SCSI
controller (still adaptec, but a 2940u), and then updated the
flash-rom from 1.0e to 1.0g (the latest from yamaha).

After that, I placed the 4416S back in the Linux/aic-7890 box, and
have had no problems at all since.

I just installed RedHat 6.0 on my computer (a Dell Dimension with a
6.4GB HD). The installation went on very smoothly and all the
hardware was detected and correctly configured. But when I tried
to boot the system, I got the following error messages:

Attempt to read beyond device
......
ex2-FS: unable to read the superblock

 and the system hang.

I already have an OS/2 partition (3.2GB) and Win98 partition (1.6GB)
on the HD, and the Linux was on the last partition (cylinders 580 to
770, or something like this). Actually, I installed Linux on the same
machine (but without the OS/2 partition) a few days ago, everything
worked.

Can someone tell me what went wrong?

Thanks in advance,

The OPTI mini-HOWTO by David Rees, previously at

Does anyone know the new URL? I lost the html page that I saved after

exact kernel configurations that needs enabling for the OPTi931 sound
card to work on 2.2, plus the isapnp.conf as well.

The fact that you're not highly experienced gives you an *advantage*
when trying to construct good documentation *for novices.*

Those of us that have been using LILO and compiling kernels since the
early '90s don't badly need good "enduser" documentation, and
virtually unconsciously work around bits of complexity that, due to
being new to you, are something you can more readily blunder into.

As such, you'll encounter things that would be *worth documenting* for
other novices.

There is value to "partnership" in this; if you supply the "ignorant
errors," others that are no longer ignorant can help provide answers,
and some of the "reasons why." That can add up to improved
documentation.

And, on occasion, changes to change system functionality a bit so as
to avoid some of the problems in the future...

Yes, Slackware will run fine with a, ap, x, xap series. But, you
should have 8Mb ram or more; 16Mb is better, forget about 4Mb.

120Mb hard disk is too small to hold gnome package itself.

This is where I want to ask my questions ... ;-)

Every system is unique, and I am in the process of a "gradual" migration
from M$ to Linux. I have a dedicated Linux box acting as a gateway (PPP
to ISP), cacheing DNS, Firewall, Sybase server, Apache webserver, and a
whole lot more.

I have ended up aliasing about 7 IP addresses to my eth0. 192.168.1.1 is
the primary, then 192.168.1.2 through 8 are aliased.

Why, you ask ... !

My ISP automatically routes my mail to me when I connect (using SMTP to
my sendmail daemon/inetd job). I have an unlimited number of e-mail
addresses at my ISP, and I have created a number of user logins for
those which I regularly use, such as a number of mailing lists go to the
sybase user, and then there is my personal account, my wife's account, a
couple of others, and then there is the maildefault account where
everything unaccounted for gets dumped.

This is all great, and I can seperate my mail feeds very effectively.

But, for convenience, I use IMAP and Netscape 4.6 (on my Windows
machine) to view my mail on the Linux server, and Netscape only seems to
allow for one mailbox on each "mailhost". Thus, although I want to have
seperate mailboxes, netscape will only let me connect to one mailbox on
each host. So, I have created all the alias IP addresses on my eth0 so
that netscape can actually *think* it is connecting to different
mail-hosts, but it is actually connecting to the *same* host.

That is the long background to a short question ...

Is there a better way of doing this...?

If not, then I have a practical use of assigning multiple IP addresses
to the same net device ...

There's some misplaced cross posting going on here, I'm not sending my
reply to all groups.

Anyway, does this work to solve the Netscape/java problem:

Maybe this solves your problem. It's a email from Bill Nottingham of
Red hat in the Starbuck (the beta version of 6.0) mailing list about
this topic :

Add to this list the following:
        /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/75dpi

(and/or the 100dpi fonts, if you have those installed...)

Then (as root) do `/etc/rc.d/init.d/xfs restart`. Does that solve
the problem?

Subject: netscape 4.51 goes into poll coma....
From: Les Schaffer <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>

i have a problem with netscape 4.51 which i recently downloaded
(before 4.6 was released :-)

like once a day i am doing ordinary browsing and netscape just hangs.

when i do an strace on netscape's process PID. i get endless of these:

SYS_168(0xbfffbad8, 0x1, 0x1388, 0x1388, 0xbfffbad8) = -1 EINTR (Interrupted system
call)
--- SIGALRM (Alarm clock) ---
gettimeofday({929021763, 122529}, NULL) = 0
sigreturn()                             = ? (mask now [])

[repeat endlesssly]

SYS_168 is the poll system call.

anyone have an idea what might be causing this coma condition and gawd
forbid, a FIX for it?

thanks much
