to monitor telnet activity, try the netstat command.
show all connections:
% netstat -a | grep telnet
count all connections:
% netstat -a | grep telnet | grep -v LISTEN | wc -l
I hook my scripts to a visual monitor that cycles every 5 minutes and
lights up when connections exceed some threshold.
Looks like this screen:

I know. However I only installed onto that system to perform various tests
(smallest install possible, will the new CD image with 2.2.9 kernel
install correctly, etc.) and I intend to use the system for a non GUI
function anyway so I don't care about X.

I agree with this to a limit. I mean Applixware and Wordperfect seem to be doing
pretty good. The thing is right now I and probably every other linux user has
tons
or respect for companies like ID Software. They make commercial products but
have been supporting linux since doom. Right now it says alot when a company
supports linux, its says to me they actually care about the consumer. I think if
a
commercial company has a unique product and ports it to Linux NOW then people
will buy it because they want to use the industry standards and because they
respect
the company for helping linux get ahead. However if MS really ports Office to
linux
as the rumors go, nobody is going to pay the outrageous $200 price tag that goes
along
with it. I don't think Open Source threatens commercial products, just forces
reasonable
pricing that MS has spent all these years needlessly bloating.
On the other hand once linux get big, and all companies start making software for
it,
they won't really have the respect that an Id Software or Corel have now, they
will be
as they always have been, just riding the bandwagon. They won't make much money
at all from linux because they will have proven they don't give a damn about us,
just the
bottom dollar.
