hi!
i've got a problem with the modules in linux kernel 2.2.9, running a dld
6.01.
when using modprobe to load the ppa (iomega zip drive) module, i always get
the
error message that the device or resource is occupied, even when i unload
the
lp module. the lp module loads fine with modprobe. if i load parport,
parport_pc and then ppa, using insmod, it works fine. i assume a missing
dependency. is it possible to create one? how can i change the order of the
modules to be loaded? this is how my /etc/conf.modules looks like:
alias net-pf-3 off
alias net-pf-4 off
alias net-pf-5 off
alias block-major-22 off
alias ppp-compress-21 bsd_comp
alias ppp-compress-24 off
alias sound es1371
# added these two lines:
options parport_pc io=0x3BC,0x378 irq=7,5
options lp parport=1
when reading the man pages for depmod, i saw an argument 'pre-install module
command'. can i use this one? what command do i have to add?
hoping your support and best wishes from mainz/germany

I believe that Unix's ancestor, Multics had the built-in ability to
reattach to an orphaned process...
I could be wrong though...

Greets.. I am running a server with a moderate amount of users.. we have
installed disk quotas, but unfortunately we have put everything on 1
partition. That means that any user who is over his/her quota, once
expired, will not be able to receive any more e-mail, because the quota
affects the mailbox size as well.
Therefore, I would like to reduce this filesystem by about 1GB, and move
/var to a new filesystem, without quotas. Is this possible, and how? I've
fooled around in fdisk, but I'm afraid to do anything.. there's no
clear-cut path on this issue(as far as fdisk mans go).
Please Cc an e-mail reply.
Thanks!

install process went well and there were no probles at all.

I think its my keyboard, but maybe the whole thing died?
I don't think so, because I see the HD working once in a while.

No, this assumes you have a naive environment copied right out of the
"Unix for Dummies" book. A "normal" environment would be one where the
sysadmin has a clue. She wouldn't have to be the most sophisticated
admin to figure out that sometimes you have to change things to make
them work more securely.

Yes, that is correct. Either roll your own replacement (the
functionality had better be there in some form) or use the
backward compatibility libraries.

Yes, it's possible. I do not know of any unix utility that can do it, however.
PowerQuest's Partition Magic (Win32) v4 can resize/manipulate ext2 partitions.
So if it's feasible, you could bring the system down, pull out the drive,
connect it to a windows box, and use Partition Magic on it.
It would be nice if Powerquest would make a Linux version!

I'm using Netterm 4.2 from my Win98 box to login to a networked linux box.
There's something funky going on with the colors. Every time I do an "ls",
I get different colors. Often, I can't even see the text because it blends in
with the background color. What I really want is a single background color
and a single foreground color that I can select. I have tried changing
Netterm's
background colors, but it works for a while, then the "ls" and other UNIX
commands mess it up again. Any suggestions?

Subject: RH 5.2 Kernel 2.0.36 module problems
Date: Mon, 14 Jun 1999 18:28:35 -0400
I am running RedHat 5.2 w/ kernel 2.0.36 (w/ updated to Apr. 99).
After reading HOWTOs, related posts on the major NGs, and
articles on various Linux sites,I decided to recompile my kernel.
My motivation was to learn more about Linux and also to get APM
support enabled so that I could poweroff my system, and to remove
some of the stuff that I didn't need (SCSI, sound support, etc.).
I followed the instructions to build the kernel and these are the steps
that I took :
(verified that the asm, linux, and scsi symlinks in /usr/include point to
the corresponding dirs in the kernel source tree)
cd /usr/src/linux
make mrproper
make xconfig
make dep clean zImage modules
cd /lib/modules
move old modules to another dir
make modules_install
edited /etc/lilo.conf to reflect the new zImage which I copied into
/boot. Copied the new System.map into /boot and setup the
symlink from System.map to System.map-2.0.36.
I followed this procedure on my RH 5.2 machine at work and
some of the features that I configured as modules were :
- ethernet support was configured as a loadable module
- support for the NE2000 PCI and ISA cards was configed as
a module
- loopback device support was configed as a loadable module
(/lib/modules/2.0.36/block/loop.o)
- support for the CD-ROM FS (ISO FS) was configed as a
loadable module (/lib/modules/2.0.36/fs/isofs.o)
After updating the system loader/boot map (lilo -v), I rebooted
the system. The new kernel booted fine but it had a message
saying that "Delayed eth0 initialization". There was also a message
about not finding the file .rhkvmtag.
So, I did the following :
cd /lib/modules/2.0.36
cat /proc/version > .rhkvmtag
Rebooted, and that message about not finding .rhkvmtag was gone.
However, my ethernet card was not initialized and of course the
network was not setup.
To fix this, I recompiled the kernel this time compiling in support for
Ethernet and the NE2000 cards into the kernel and upon rebooting
my ethernet card was configured properly and I could access the network.
Here is my question (finally!): why is the ethernet module
not loaded up automatically ? Also, I can't mount any CD-ROMs
or ISO image files without insmod'ing the appropriate modules
first ?
I thought the whole purpose of setting up these things as loadable
modules was to have these modules load up automatically on
demand (by kerneld). BTW, kerneld is running on my machine. I
just can't figure out why I have to insmod the isofs.o and loop.o
modules to mount CD-ROMs and ISO images because that defeats the
whole purpose of configuring things as modules!
Can someone please explain to me what I am doing wrong, any steps
I missed during the kernel compile process, etc ?
Also, what features (besides support for the root FS) ABSOLUTELY
have to be compiled into the kernel ? At work, I am using an NE2000
ethernet adapter to connect to our LAN, at home I use PPP to
dial into my ISP.
Any information on this matter is going to be greatly appreciated.
I would like to upgrade the kernel to one of the 2.2.x ones, but I
will hold off on that until this current problem with 2.0.36 is
resolved.
PS : I tried doing a "depmod -a" and even a "depmod -a -v 2.0.36"
after "make modules_install" but even then I couldn't mount CD-ROMs
and ISO images without first doing an insmod on the respective modules.

How do you get gnuplot to put up a scroll bar or slider or other widget

The CD actually does include a Linux partition, and in that partition are
disk images for an OpenDOS floppy with the DOS version of the program.
Therefore, there's no need to pull the hard drive; just create the boot
floppy, bring the system down, boot with the boot floppy, and use that to
repartition the drive.
There's also an upgrade to 4.01 on PowerQuest's web site. Unfortunately,
AFAIK there's no way to update the emergency floppies unless you've got a
system running Windows. If you DO have a system running Windows, though,
you can update the boot floppy and use version 4.01 on it. (You'll
actually update the Windows-based boot floppy creation utility and create
a new boot floppy, which will then boot the DOS part of Windows rather
than OpenDOS.)
One caveat: *ANY* utility that mucks around with low-level data
structures on a hard disk IS INHERENTLY DANGEROUS! DO NOT use Partition
Magic unless you've first backed up your data! Somebody posted just a
couple of days ago about PM trashing his ext2 partition. PM USUALLY
behaves itself pretty well, but don't take this for granted!

Subject: Removing jammed modules?
Date: Tue, 15 Jun 1999 12:39:14 -0400
Every now and then I end up with a uselessly jammed kernel
module in place. It's always associated with trying to mount
some device or other -- due to whatever random burp the
modular driver doesn't initialize properly. Then the device
is not mounted, and the module can't be removed by the usual
means (rmmod or modprobe -r). For instance right now I have
the module for my parallel port zipdrive stuck (most of the time
it works fine):
waverley:~# lsmod
Module Size Used by
sd_mod 15868 0 (autoclean) (unused)
parport_pc 5624 1 (autoclean)
ppa 9052 1 (uninitialized)
^^^^^^^^^^^^^
parport 6820 1 (autoclean) [parport_pc ppa]
scsi_mod 36804 1 (autoclean) [sd_mod ppa]
My question is, When this happens is there any way to force
the module out and reload it (e.g. by messing with /proc)?
The only way out that I have found is rebooting, but that's
tedious (and should only be for Windoze!).
