Why would you want to bother installing an older version of Linux?
I can understand holding on to a well-oiled, operating machine, but
when you are starting out fresh you might as well get the latest and
the greatest. The kernel is only a small part of the distribution,
most of the hundreds of other smaller packages have incremental
changes as well, usually with bug and security fixes. It would take
days to d/l and install all this stuff.
I'm not even going to bother replying to the $80 fee thing, you can
get RH 6.0 anywhere from $0, $5, $40 to $80, depending on your time
and net connection. It's crazy to not use the latest distro just to
save a few bucks. Is your time not worth $5?

This isn't necessarily the same geometry used when your partitions were
created and LILO was installed. Does fdisk report mismatches of partition
parameters when you run it after booting from rescue floppy? It could be
that "LBA" was enabled in your BIOS when setting up the drive and somehow
got turned off in the meantime, for example.

Thanx very much for the input...
As of right now, I've got Xfree86 properly configured...had to do a lot of
stumbling to do that considering I know nothing about Linux and my Video
card is a V3-3000 AGP. But I got it going....I also have AfterStep running
when I login as root.....man I love that AfterStep :-).
I ordered RedHat 6.0 from Linux-Now for $5.95 including shipping and it
should be in next week. After I learn a little more by messing up my 5.1
.....I'll wipe the drive clean and start fresh with the 6.0.
I'm going to check into that book you mentioned and maybe a "Dummies" book.
I am very comfortable with DOS and a command line interface....so I see no
reason why I shouldn't be able to learn this if I get started right.
thanx again

I, too, just got into linux, within the last 2 weeks or so. Thing is, I'm
working full time and then some, doing absolutely nothing except studying
linux.
To have a successful linux experience, it's absolutely crucial to have
good documentation available to you, and on your level; some documentation
is really basic, and others really advanced, you've got to get the stuff
that matches you.
I've never liked any Unleashed books. Here are the things I had available
to me to start, and I think have worked out very well: RedHad 5.2, and
the Installation Guide. They make one really good Installation Guide,
with lots of good info for a beginner.
I have the "A Practical Guide to Linux" by Mark Sobell, and it's a perfect
place to pick up directly after finishing the installation guide. But
installation guide's got to come first. And after that, everything is
more technical, and you'll find answers online or in the LDP.
... Your questions ... If you're trying to read the win98 files,
instead of hda1, try hda. Also, when you get Xfree86 running, go to Disk
Manager, and you'll get a graphical list of drives, could save some time.
You can't mount the drive as MS-DOS, because you've got to have fat32
support and also long names. Use vfat. I know in 5.2 the fat32 support
is built in, but perhaps not in 5.1.
Good luck.
... One more comment. You mentioned upgrading. I've gotten from several
sources that it's not generally a good idea to upgrade by just installing
a new version. It works out a lot better to have a blank hard drive when
you install. (Or free space on an existing hard drive.)

I presume you are referring to menus like the old DOS batch file menus
that looked somewhat like this
Welcome to the DOS Slave Menu
1. Appications
2. Time Wasters
3. Quit & Go to Work
(pick a number u ,may get lucky)
You can write such a script in several of the shells or in Perl. put
the menu script in each particular groups dir, if you have cuspomized
them by group.

Subject: HELP: DES encryption under Linux international kernel 2.2.x
First of all, thank you for taking the time to read this message and for
any help that you can provide.
I have been using the crypto kernel patches since the late 2.0.x kernel
series to maintain a DES encrypted file system on a floppy disk that
contains files that I want to keep prying eyes out of (sorry, no world
domination, terrorist, or drug-trafficking plans ;) I have used this
DES encrypted floppy for some time under the 2.0.x kernels. However, I
have run into a problem with DES encryption in general since upgrading
to RedHat 6.0 and running the 2.2.x kernel series.
I have downloaded and applied the International Kernel patches from
http://www.kerneli.org/ for the particular version of the kernel that I
happen to be using (now 2.2.10). I have also applied the patch to
util-linux-2.9e found in /usr/src/linux/Documentation/crypto and
recompiled the kernel with DES encryption support. However, I have the
following problems:
1. I cannot mount the DES encrypted floppy disk that I made under the
2.0.x kernel series. Here's what I get when I try to mount it:
rebecca:~# mount /des
Password:
Init (up to 16 hex digits):
ioctl: LOOP_SET_STATUS: Invalid argument
rebecca:~#
I get the same error if I try to "losetup -e des /dev/loop0 /dev/fd0".
I was never challenged for the "Init" digits under the 2.0.x kernel
series. Even if I try to enter some hex digits, I still get the ioctl
error.
Per the faq.txt in /usr/src/linux/Documentation/crypto, I have tried the
following without success:
losetup /dev/loop0 /dev/fd0
losetup -e des /dev/loop0 /dev/loop1
I have even tried copying the encrypted file system to an image file and
mounting the image, but I still get the same error.
I also tried applying the mount-2.7l patch in
/usr/src/linux/Documentation/crypto to mount-2.7l.tar.gz. That mount
and losetup do not work either.
I finally gave up on this and transferred all of the data on the disk to
an IDEA encrypted floppy disk by rebooting into a 2.0.34 crypto-enabled
kernel. I can mount the IDEA encrypted file system (created under
2.2.x) ok.
Is there any way of mounting my DES encrypted file system under 2.2.x?
2. I cannot create a new DES encrypted file system under 2.2.x for the
same reasons. I am challenged for the Init digits, but nothing I enter
at the prompt seems to work and I get the "ioctl: LOOP_SET_STATUS:
Invalid argument" error.
Is DES just "broke" under the International Kernel right now?
Thanks for any assistance or insight that you can provide.

True. I was surprised to see that IP masquerading isn't covered
in the (rather good) manual, either. This is a bit disappointing.

I never used the susehelp, admittedly. Usually I just select
the options I need. It is, however, close to impossible to say
what _your_ .config should be looking alike, unless you'd tell
us much more about your setup. The various configuration options
to get IP masquerading working do not differ from any other
distribution (as far as I can tell).
>It should be clear that your experience comes from upgrading
>an older SuSE distribution, as opposed to a fresh install.
Uh, I installed SuSE onto several machines for customers of
mine. Various versions, various hardware. I don't think that
I ever read all the handbook (regardless of the version);
usually, I just check the startup pages to see whether the
setup process has been changed in some respect. The last time
I installed Linux on my own LAN from scratch is already 5 years
ago (and the first setup was from 27 floppy disks in a pre-0.98
kernel version :) ).

Ah. Thanks, that did it. So I can delete the add-on command
in /sbin/init.d/masquerade :)

At the command prompt:
$ chmod u+s /usr/sbin/pppd
And assuming all else is properly configured all users should be able to
use the ppp interface.

Would you be better off with using the kernel RAID software rather
than a hardware RAID solution?
Also, would dual CPU's (even slower ones) and an SMP kernel be
better than a single CPU for a server?

Hi! my name is Fernando and this is just some thoughts i had since
starting using Linux.( sorry for my inglish, it's been a long time since I
don't use it)
I really think Linux is a GREAT system: it's free, it WORKS! I trully
believe that in a few years Linux will take it's place in big offices as the
best cost/production server. The Linux it self has shown it!
What I still wonder is if Linux will be on the HOME computers around the
world... Let me explain : As great as Linux is as a functional system ( NO
DOUBT about it) , it is in many ways still hard for use when it comes to
final users. In spite of lot of people said to me that the "filosofy" of
Linux weren't made for comon users, it bugs me a little that the heroic idea
of a free system can not be shared by all. Thus the problem that there are
so many things going around Linux ,that it gets real hard to choose one!
Meanning : By the NET I've seen lot of programs to 3D stuff, all free, but
none complete. Please, don't take me wrong here, I think Linux is of the
best things that happened ever! But still have somethings to be worked out
not as a system, but in it's use).
Some other facts are also true: Besides the fact that microsoft has
lattely done some "not cool" things, their work in turning it system into a
simple-using one ( meaning it's not hard at all to install and use it. Let's
face it, for example: internet explorer5 as I've seen, is simple and
powerfull for comon user, even if it's a bit slow) is it biggest reason for
the popularity of Windows sys around the world, and, because of that, most
used programs ( and good ones, as 3dmax etc...)are only found in use with
Windows. The bad point of it is that the cost grew so high that the only way
lots of of people could use it, is doing (or purchasing by) hacker
tuff( which is illegal!!!). So it became a circle: everyone uses windows
because it's simple and "easy to find", gives Microsoft it's big name,
because everybody uses it.
I relly don't know the answer for ending this, but maybe, if Linux would
get started in some kind of "workstation simple users package" , than we
would have a real utopia thing going on!

Date: 19 Jun 1999 22:25:47 GMT
Dear Linux Community,
I have Redhat 6.0 with the Gnome/KDE WM. I'm kind of new to Linux so please be
patient. The problem is it all looks to much like windows!! I want to learn
how to use linux, not try and make linux like windows. Using Gnome as a WM
(being it's already installed), I want to clean up the desktop. All I want on
my screen is one terminal window (I'm beginning to learn to use Bash to run
startup scripts for other desktop utilities at startup (xclock, emacs, etc). I
want to change the menus that appear when I click on the desktop with the left,
middle, and right buttons. Ideally, it would be great to get rid of the start
menu on the bottom of the screen and be able to get at all my utilities (and
maybe one submenu somewhere for gnome apps) through the menu on the mouse
clicks instead of the start menu.
Like I said, I'm more interested in learning Linux/UNIX than trying learn a
window manager that is just trying to be windows.
Oh yea. Does anyone know how I can get rid of the Redhat graphic throughout
the system (Like on the login screen, etc). I've never been very commercial.
I don't mind using Redhat, I just don't need graphic everywhere I turn.
Thank you very much for help you may have. I heartly appreciate all your
efforts.

Hi, guys,
We're gonna build a farm of servers. The config is like this:
PIII 400, Asus 100 Mhz MB with SCSI, Mylex AcceleRAID, 5x 9 G HD
(seagate baracuda). cheapo video card. 512MB ram.
Here's the help-wanted issues:
a.Can we configure AcceleRAID so Linux sees the 45G as a big HD, and

b.The HD of our choice is not suuported on the
ftp://ftp.mylex.com/pub/dac960/diskcomp.html for AcceleRAID, but it is
for those DAC960PL/PDU/PG. Can we install on those disks still?
Those are Seagate Baracuda ST19171W.
c.I'm not sure about the CPU issue, I do hope this setup would be

Ultrasparc 143Mhz, 196Meg RAM. 2xSun 2.1G HD, 1xSeagate 39173. total
