Subject: Weird kernel problem
Date: Sat, 03 Jul 1999 17:13:30 GMT

I have compiled kernel 2.2.10 and put it over my RH-compiled 2.2.5-22. I
copied vmlinux, bzImage, and System.map to /boot and redid the symlinks.
Now, when I with the new kernel, it works fine, but when I leave it
turned on for a long time, it "turns off," meaning the computer doesn't
respond and the HD light is on, but no HD activity. This has also
happened with every kernel I have compiled that was above 2.2. I am not
sure if this has to do with my hardware, or with my choosing wrong
options. I have a PCI S3 Virge video card, an old ISA sound card (I am
using the ad1848 and opl3 modules). I also have an external modem.
Could anyone give me some suggestions or send me their .config file?

Thanks in advance,

Ilia Mirkin

I'm running RedHat 6.0 on my Inspiron 7000 (ATI Rage video 8mb; 15" LCD;
etc). X works great without down-grading the BIOS (I had to enable frame
buffering). An excellent resource is the [Linux Inspiron] mail list, and
associated web sites. http://inspiron.ntsj.com/ (the web page refers to
Insp.3500, but the list deals w/ all models).

I have LILO set up to boot dos and linux and it works great. I was wondering

Hi,
I'm trying to get a Modular MM205 card to work under Linux.
I've got Kwintv and it works but not correctly ! I have to set it to
NTSC before I see any picture and then it only tunes a few cable
channels and no terrestrial channels. Anyone got this combo to work ??

Greetings,

As linux does not have sh or ksh,
(and I don't plan on compiling/using pdksh)
I have a few ksh script that broke when I ran
them under bash (ver 2.02.1) on linux.

In particular "if [[ .... ]] " and "print"
were the things it was complaining about.

bash man page says:
    "... Bash also incorporates useful
features from the Korn and C shells (ksh and csh). "

So, should I remedy those by changing "print" to "echo"
and "[[" to "[" ..... What other options do I have?

Thanks,
Farid

go to http://metalab.unc.edu/LDP/ , the linux documentation project

You've admitted that "everyone" does it - presumably including your side.

(And actually, no, not *everyone* does. Just lots of people. There are
groups that are able to make progress without it.)

I just put SuSE 6.1 on my wife's new Thinkpad. It's nice, but it looks
like IBM puts useless winmodems on there laptops. Yeesh.

Toshiba is just now setting up a site with info about running Linux on
their laptops.

Dell has supposedly been shipping Linux for some time, but everytime I
get a flyer in the mail from them all I see is M$ BS.

I guess RH should work a SparcBook too ?

What I'm doing on my system is to use mtools; although they are most
frequently used to access floppies, it is also possible to access a dos
partition with them. You have to specify a letter for your dos partition
in some conf file (/etc/mtools.conf or so... I don't remember the name).
Install the mtools if they aren't already and look at the mtools manpage
for details. When you are done, you can access the dos partition in the
same way you access a floppy drive.
Another possibility would be to mount the dos partition. However, I
didn't do that, so I can't provide details.

If you haven't worked it out yet : make sure you have the resolutions, which
you want to switch back and forth from, set in the /etc/XF86Config file. An
easy way to do this is to set them all up on start up, or run Setup again
(i.e. "Setup" on Redhat).

Or, if you're really, really on the cheap and don't mind
getting an older release, go to your local public library
and check out some books on linux. Chances are one or more
of them will have a CD in the back to install from. Pick
your favorite (preferred distribution, most recent, best
book, whatever) and install from that. You can always
update later if you need to.

Yes, it's console mode, as in xterm, curses...as opposed to requiring

but, is there a command line interface in the sense that it can be

You will get a bazillion answers, most the same. If you kernel is
compiled with the requisite modules, you should be able to mount your
DOS partition as follows (assuming the partition is hda1 and the
directory /dos exists):

mount -t vfat /dev/hda1 /dos

To make things more convenient, edit /etc/fstab and add a line like the
following (assuming the above command works);

/dev/hda1 /dos vfat defaults,user,noauto,mode=0774 0 0

This will let any user mount the DOS partition such that he or she and
anyone in his or her group can read and write files there. Others will
have only read access. Just change the mode= directive to modify that.
You can also specify that only a particular group may have access to the
partition (usually the group msdos, which is 46 numerically on my
system, see /etc/group). In that case, the following might be useful:

/dev/hda1 /dos vfat defaults,user,gid=46,mode=0770 0 0

Something similar happened to me too a while ago. In make config make
sure you don't include the power-saver features.

Subject: How do I tell "man" or "emacs" to use full telnet window?
Date: Sat, 03 Jul 1999 13:23:03 -0700

Hi folks,

how can I tell "man" or "emacs" or any other ascii based
application to use the full telnet window that I have set up? I
use netterm as telnet application where I can set row and column
numbers bigger than 24 by 80. But "man" does use only this
standard screen to scroll and "emacs" does only cover this 32x80
area of the window. Any hints?

Thanks in advance, David.
