from "man top":

"The load averages are the average number of process ready to run
during the last 1, 5 and 15 minutes."

Processes that are not I/O bound are usually waiting for CPU. These are
said to be in the "run queue". If your jobs are taking too long and the
run queue is high, you need to upgrade your CPU. If your jobs are
taking too long and the run queue is low, you probably need to get some
faster disk drives. (Of course, either conditioin could be addressed by
re-thinking the way your code works.)

Rarely going over two is good.
Assuming you're actually doing things. ;)

Just started using vmware and I love it - its awesome!
I still can't figure out how to connect to the internet directly from the
WIN98 virtual machine - the documentation on vmware's website about
networking was way beyond me. Can somebody help me with this - I need some
quickie directions. I know I have set it up with host-only networking and I
can see the virtual network card inside the virtual machine. I have also
configured the internet connection wizard to connect to my ISP using the
LAN, but it won't connect while I am connected to my ISP in my host Linux
machine. What do I do?

".forward" file in your home directory which pipes the mail through
the script:

"| /path/to/script/script"

or put the command in the /etc/aliases.

Procmail is a popular piece of software for processing mail.

Sounds like you may have skipped the:
  make modules
  make modules_install
steps since it appears a driver isn't present.
Or perhaps you didn't specify the modules to
be made correctly (missed a few)?

Need help with multiple layouts under X using Gnome and Enlightenment, and
in terminal using Redhat 6.0 with a bash shell. I have many users using
the same workstation and would like to setup the ability to change keyboard
layouts by pushing Ctrl + Shift at anytime (like MS Windows). This means
when they get a login prompt they could press Ctrl + Shift to cycle through
layouts. Is this possible?

The current solution is to alias loadkeys and xmodmap to commands that use
letters that are the same in the different layouts (i.e. "a" and "m" and
the number keys are the same in Qwerty and in Dvorak). This becomes
tedious because a user can log out and another sits down to use the sytem
only to find that their username "phil" comes out on the screen "ldcn".
Another possible solution would be to set the keyboard layout to qwerty
every time someone logs out. Is this possible?

I think I was always taught that WWI was 1914-1918, even though we didn't
enter the war until 1917. And likewise, WWII started in 1939, though many
history books separated chapters at the Dec 1941 dividing line as life in
the US changed dramatically afterwards.

Could you get MIDI sound before you tried this driver? because I don't
get MIDI sound either. I've only managed to get CD audio, maybe other
people can get more.

What kernel are you using? I tried the driver with 2.2.9 kernel and got
similar messages (I think, about not being able to find the correct
drivers, or having an incompatible kernel). When I installed 2.2.5 (with
RedHat5.2) it worked OK. However, I did compile the kernel myself, and
added the sound from the config of the build. This may make a
difference.

Like I said, I don't know anything about the driver other than what
Creative says. Maybe you should contact them with your problem. With any
luck they'll have it sorted out soon, and we can all play our hard
searched-for mp3's.

I have the same problem on my laptop just after I boot, although
it doesn't always happen. Also gnome seems to take forever to
come up in such a session. Others have reported this or
similar problems. The problem appears to be the session
manager. If you go to the toolbox and click on session manager
you will probably discoverer that there is no associated menu,
which suggests the session manager never got started properly
or died. You might also look at .xsession-errors to see if it
is at informative.

But so far no one seems to know exactly what is happening.

I bought an HP 820Cse and discovered the horrible twisted truth about
GDI "printers" the hard way.
Make sure you don't get stuck with a GDI "printer" they're pure garbage.
I was so disillusioned with this experience that I trashed it and made
sure that the next printer I bought was NOT an HP.
I bought an Epson Stylus 600 and it's been okay so far.
I think if I had it to do over again, I'd go ahead and spend the bucks

I use RH 6.0 and kernel 2.2.5-25. Compiling the kernel is ok and raid 1 is
working fine. When I try with the kernel 2.2.10 (original .tar.gz), I never
made raid disk works.
Or maybe, kernel from RedHat are patched for raid support ?

In the linux-raid mailing list, i've read that linux 2.2.7+ doesn't support
raid anymore because of a change in the buffer. Am I dreaming ??

Anyway, df still not working ... Any clue why it always report the same disk
utlisation ? (Yes, I add some stuff on the disk !)

James - that fact is not really relevent. WWII was still costly to the US
in terms of lives lost, though it pales in comparison to the price paid by
the Soviets and Chinese (approx 30million each). Obviously having
virtually no damage and also having ranted up production abilities for the
war meant that the US was in terrific shape afterwards.

What precautions do I need to take when linking machines together

[CC'd from comp.os.linux.misc for the pure joy of it]

Once upon a time (Wed, 7 Jul 1999 20:49:20 -0400), Dave Howland
<[EMAIL PROTECTED]> posted the following to our fine group:
: I'm looking for a good email client basically just to download my email to
: a local inbox... (so it doesn't take up so much space in my shell account
: on my school's server) a work-a-like to the eudora client for window's 95
: would be great. i don't really need the capability to read local mail,
: since i'm just running a dialup machine and no mail gets routed to my
: system. multiple mailbox support and/or filtering capability would be a
: plus too... i've tried mahogany and balsa, but neither quite cut it. any
: suggestions would be greatly appreciated...

If I understand you correctly, look into fetchmail. It'll download the
mail from the server, do some basic filtering, and deliver it to sendmail
(installed on your system). sendmail then delivers to procmail (if set
up correctly), allowing you to use one of the most popular mail filtering
packages available.

Having the mail downloaded thus allows you to use almost any Unixish MUA,
letting you choose the one that best satisfies your needs. [0]

I would doubt, the home pages of t-online are gone. They claim to be
one of germany biggest providers. Perhaps the path to the home pages
has changed.

I was looking around for a couple weeks and couldn't find
it. I found Red Hat 6 and Mandrake ISOs but no Caldera. I
ended up downloading the dir structure from Caldera's site
and burned it to a CD but I haven't tried it to see if it
works (bootable or installable w/ floppys). Good luck.
