I fyou install ( -i ) srpm package it will actually install the soruce:
place .spec file into /usr/src/redhat/SPECS and put sources to
/usr/src/redhat/SOURCES. To actually install the program you first have
rebuild the srpm file into a binray rpm do rpm --rebuild file.src.rpm
Also for query ( -q ) you shouldn't use wildcards, not even filename,
you should use package name, i.e. telnet-0.10-5.i386.rpm file means
package name is telnet, or telnet-0.10-5, do omit .i386.rpm part when
referring to package (do use it when you are referring to a file
though).

As for glint - the only advice I can give is - don't use it. I heard
people from RedHat themselves saying how horrible it is ;-)

Yes. Freeware certainly. You need to check in the case of *some*
shareware packages, but generally if you distribute the shareware

I assume you're using bash for your shell - you should export the

export PATH=$PATH:/some/new/path

I was wondering if anyone here knew of a program for burning cd's that
supports multi-session better than cdrecord? I've read the readme for
multi-session, and it's pretty ugly. I'm also a bit spoiled from the old
windoze days of "import last session". Are there any linux progs that do
that? I tried xcdroast, but it doesn't do it.

Second question. I recently upgraded from debian 2.0 to 2.1 and my / partition
went from 21% to 76% (It's a 100mb partition). My /usr and /home partitions
are 3gb and 700mb respectively. Any idea what swelled my root partition so
much? I emptied out my /var/cache/apt/archives (actually had to link it to
the /usr partition because it was filling up). But still haven't seen anything
that seems like it might be the cause of the sudden swell. Thanks!

I'm running 4.51 on a SGI Octane running IRIX 6.5.4 and I have no
problem with this site. Occassionally I get a crash due to Java, but
actually quite rarely. It must be a Linux thing. Same on the Mac, not
very many Java crashed.

Well, another great irony that will be lost on Kulisz is that there
are forms of socialism on a limited scale that *have* been successful,

employee-owned companies, community-run (NOT government-run) public

Liberty allows people to *voluntarily* organize into collectives if
they wish, provided only that they do not initiate force or fraud.
The converse is not true; a non-free society will never tolerate a
group of people who organize in an effort to become free. It would
not be possible, under the totalitarian regime advocated by Kulisz,

liberty, justice, and rule of law would be respected. Indeed, he

I'm not sure what you mean by "sharing" the projects. Is this just a simple
put the file on a shared drive (Samba) or some sort of web collaboration
thingy for Project98?

If the former, and sharing other kinds of files work OK, you could try
asking on a Samba group.

If it is the latter, you could try installing Frontpage server extensions on
the web server - I think you can get extensions for Apache (I'm not sure
though). I'm not sure if that will help, but a lot of MS apps use them for
their "web publishing" part (yuck). Project 98 isn't new enough to have the
new Office 2000 server extensions - they aren't going to be available for
non MS web servers (you can decide whether that is good or bad ;-).

BTW I hate FP server extensions (on any web server).

If you can't get Project working on Apache, would it be possible to use
Personal Web Server on a win9x or NT workstation just for Project stuff, but
keep your Linux server for everything else.

Good luck

If this didn't work, then you did something wrong (as I did, when I was
originally trying to set this up). I've set up three systems like this
now, and they all work fine.

>I cannot boot from Linux by swapping boot order in the BIOS getting error

That would make sense. LILO and the kernel are expecting to find your root
file system at /dev/hdc3. If you change things around, it doesn't work
well.

Post the exact sequence and commands you used to try to set this up. Then
I might be able to help you get it figured out. For me, the final trick
was to understand that everytime you re-run LILO (/sbin/lilo) you have to
re-copy the 512 bytes to the file in your windows root directory.

To send me email, replace 'nospam' with 'home'.

I'm trying to setup SVGATextMode with my Diamond Viper V550 which uses

TNT chipset and I can't find any information on the clock settings. I've

XConfig doesn't seem to list any of the clock settings either. If anyone has

Me too. I find it MUCH more stable than any of the Netscape builds. Pity
MS doesn't get into the Linux buzz, I'm sure many people would still use
MS-Office under Linux, and IE.

Not that open source is no good... but MS do have some reasonable
products and I think we could all benefit from some of them (like IE5).

I used to work for AAP-Reuters, who had a similar device, except it was solid

it used a 80 bit syncronous data stream, and was a real hassle to fault find,
using conventional scopes, and a speed of 1200 baud!

Nope. 170MB/MINUTE, maybe.

35 cylinders * 512 bytes/cylinder * 10,000 RPM = 179,200,000 bytes/minute

This works out to 2.85MB/s (MB=1,048,576 bytes). Of course, that's just
for one head, and most drives do have several, but not enough to bring the
rates up to 170MB/s.

> Also I
> checked out the spec sheets for those new SCSI drives. They all claim sustained

I'm not sure what "new SCSI drives" you're referring to, unless it's the
Seagate ST39173LW referred to by a previous poster. I just checked
Seagate's web site, and they claim internal throughput of "up to 22.5
Mbyte per second." Note that this is an "up to" figure, meaning it's
probably the maximum off of the fastest cylinders. Note also that
internal transfer rates are usually quoted in megaBITS per second (Mbps),
not megaBYTES per second (MBps), though that wasn't the case for the
particular Seagate web site I just quoted. That case difference makes
the data transfer rates look eight times higher than it is if you don't
notice it or don't know that "b" stands for "bit" and "B" stands for
"byte." I strongly suspect that your "70MB/sec" figure is really 70Mbps,
making it 8.75MB/sec.

The short answer is that it can't be done, since WP uses its own font
rasterizer that only works with PostScript Type 1 fonts.

The long answer is that if you want to convert your TrueType fonts to Type
1 format, you might get WP to recognize them. A better solution is to go
back to the font's source and locate a Type 1 version (many font CDs
include both, for instance).

You can read more about fonts in WP for Linux on my web site:

Is the apache rpm the only one I need to install to get a web server going?
I guess this is the same question, but what rpm's are installed if a web
server is chosen during a 6.0 install?

I'm using the ls that comes with fileutils 4.0.

Is seems that ls no longer using /etc/DIR_COLORS, nor
.dir_colors. I've tried changing both and they have
no effect. When I run dircolors, it shows nothing
has changed. Tried both console and xterm. Using
RH6.0. Any ideas?
  Kurt
