I have RedHat 6.0. I have a command that starts a program, and the command
is in a file as follows:

/usr/local/squid/bin/squid &

The above line (stored in a file called squidbatchstart) can be successfully
run with the "at" command from the command prompt as follows:

at now + 1 minute < /usr/local/squid/bin/squidbatchstart

I can use "atq" to show the job in the batch queue, and it runs successfully
after exactly one minute. However, when I put this same sequence into
/etc/rc.d/rc.local it doesn't work properly. It gets into the batch queue
alright, but sits there foreever, even past the scheduled time of execution.
Here is the line I put into rc.local:

at now + 1 minute < /usr/local/squid/bin/squidbatchstart &

Why does the "at" command not work properly when executed from rc.local, but
works just find when executed from the command prompt???

Thanks for help,
Micromans

Um, so?

You don't need System Commander. LILO will boot Windows.

Backup? Buy me a big enough tape drive and I'll gladly back it up.
Otherwise, I hope you get what you deserve for being an asshole.

Just grabbed mpg123-0.59r. When I try and play back, I get what sounds
like byte swapped data ... but choppy too. I'm playing back directly
from numerous files. All sound the same.

Here's an example:

pawn:~$ mpg123 -v mp3\\rush\\jacobs_ladder.mp3
High Performance MPEG 1.0/2.0/2.5 Audio Player for Layer 1, 2 and 3.
Version 0.59r (1999/Jun/15). Written and copyrights by Michael Hipp.
Uses code from various people. See 'README' for more!
THIS SOFTWARE COMES WITH ABSOLUTELY NO WARRANTY! USE AT YOUR OWN RISK!

Playing MPEG stream from mp3\rush\jacobs_ladder.mp3 ...
MPEG 1.0, Layer: III, Freq: 44100, mode: Joint-Stereo, modext: 2, BPF :
417
Channels: 2, copyright: Yes, original: Yes, CRC: No, emphasis: 0.
Bitrate: 128 Kbits/s, Extension value: 0
Audio: 1:1 conversion, rate: 44100, encoding: signed 16 bit, channels: 2

Frame# 150 [17020], Time: 00:03.91 [07:24.60],
[0:03] Decoding of mp3\rush\jacobs_ladder.mp3 finished.
pawn:~$ cd /usr/local/src/mpg123-0.59r

Seems like there should be no problems ... but there sure are.

I'm using commercial OSS drivers ... which are working fine. Also
Slackware 7.1 with kernel 2.2.16.

The Xanim home page is http://xanim.va.pubnix.com/home.html, but I'll
save you a trip: Podlipec *cannot* include the Sorenson codec
because Sorenson won't give him the necessary source code, even on a
for-pay basis.

You need to post the exact error. It would also be nice if you
posted what distribution of Linux (and what version) you're using.
What hardware you have would be nice too.

Oh, and try hitting Alt-F7. It's possible that X is running, but
you're currently not looking at it.

Try the -y option... a *LOT* of mp3 files are encoded with wretched
software and/or corrupted in transmission somehow. -y enables resync on
errors. If mpg123 doesn't work even with -y, xmms seems able to handle
broken mp3s even more easily.

BTW, \rush\jacobs_ladder\blah doesn't look like a Linux pathname at all.
\ is a backslash, / is a slash--they are very different.

You might want to try SMPEG, developed by Loki:

On my machine, performance is about the same as MpegTV, but this one is
free =).

If you downloaded and burned "install.iso" onto a CD-R/RW it should contain
all the packages, except for the ones on the "contrib.iso" (which you
probably don't need and won't be asked for anyway). The packages are located
in: <cdrom_mountpoint>/slakware/<software_series_name>/
ie. a1 = /cdrom/slakware/a1/

But I'm curious as to why the install program asked you where the packages
were. It should know already. Did you tell it you were installing from a
cdrom?

> The distribution I had was downloaded from the net (iso image and burn to
> CD) ... it's merely 640 megs

And how precisely is that a problem? Your average cdrom only hold about
650MB maximum. The file-system on a cdrom doesn't always fill the entire
capacity of the disk. I haven't check the size of the install.iso but that
sounds about right.
