I've got a HP DeskJet 500C attached to my parallel port. I've been able to
send files to it via "cat filename > /dev/lp0", so I know I've got kernel
modules, etc. working right. I've installed LPRng, ifhp, and
apsfilter-LPRng, but I've been unsucessful getting it to print postscript
(or even plain text) with lpr. I've gotten the files to spool correctly,
but I think I've got some problems with the filter setup. In the process
of fiddling around with printcap, apsfilter.conf, etc. I've gotten it to
print out a bunch of PJL commands, but on another attempt, I got it to
filter the file through gs, but it didn't print. (When checked the
filter's progress w/ ps, it seemed like gs was running, but not doing
anything.) Can someone help me out?

Just a (maybe stupid) guess: Did you check to which value your history
is set? Look in the .bash_profile (or was it the .bashrc?) if there is
something concerning the history, i.e. the number of commands stored in
the history file. Maybe it is set to 1 by default.
Admittedly, I was not aware of the hotkeys you mentioned; I always use
the Up/Down arrows.

There aren't any newer versions of either one in the RH6.0 updates
dir...it seems the versions distributed with RH 6.0 are the most recent,
according to RedHat anyway.
I checked the version number of the rpms that came with RH6.0 and found
a slightly more recent one on rufus.w3.org, but i don't know that i
should grab it....
the part that concerns me is the ld error...i've ran ldconfig as root, i
know i'm using the correct version of perl 5.00503, and the compiler
seems to work with everything else, except when i try to configure
apache with mod_perl...even when i do it without mod_perl it works fine.

I was in the same boat as you about a year ago, when I decided to work
solely from my Linux system. I'm a physicist, so I'm always doing data
plots and such, and found Origin very useful. Unfortunately, you probably
aren't going to like my solution. I found a popular program called
gnuplot, which...well, plots data. It is, by default, a command line
program and is quite spartan (although graphical interfaces are availible,
they're nowhere near Origin). I found the easiest thing to do was write
scripts for gnuplot, then redirect standard input to run the script
through gnuplot. When I began running all of this from within xemacs,
I began to like it even more than Origin.
At this point, I'm running gnuplot in conjunction with xfig and some
simple homemade Perl scripts, and I can do anything I ever needed to do.
I have a lot of freedom, but I had to learn a lot to get to this point.
If you want to try this route, check out the gnuplot page at
http://www.cs.dartmouth.edu/gnuplot_info.html
There are also a number of other plotting programs available, and some
rather good ones are currently in development. Some websites that I think
you might find valuable are "Scientific Applications on Linux" and the
Science/Engineering subcategory of the Linux Encyclopedia:
http://SAL.KachinaTech.COM/index.shtml
http://stommel.tamu.edu/~baum/linuxlist/linuxlist/node6.html
I would be happy to discuss this further over email if you would like more

If you find you're interested in mySQL, the docs that are available
with it can be a little hard to follow at first. O'Reilly and
Assoc. just published a very good book called "MySQL and mSQL"
by Randy Jay Yarger, George Reese and Tim King. It just started
shipping last week. It includes stuff on web-based development as
well a plain old client-server.

If cpio doesnt work try using tar or ftp. You could even mount the sco
harddisk with nfs and do a straight copy.
Sometimes adding the "c" flag to cpio can also help.
If you have binaries that you need to run, make sure that you install ibcs.
You might also need to load it with "insmod iBCS".
Redhat has a rpm called kernel-ibcs.rpm
I dont think it matters what distribution you use.
If you have many shell scripts you have to change echo to echo -n. You can
do it as an alias.

When you use fdisk, it will report cylinders. If the disk has
more than 1024 cylinders, it will warn you. As I indicated in my
original answer, the unused partitions on the second disk are
not likely to meet your needs, so you should remove them. When
you use fdisk to repartition that unused space, it will refer
to cylinders. You will need one cylinder entirely below cylinder
1024 to put the kernel in. It is possible all of the cylinders
on the second disk are below 1024, but if not, you can make
a relatively small partition---say about 20MB---which you can
later in the installation process specify to mount on /boot.
Then everything should work. If all the cylinders are below
1024, you don't need the separate boot partition and can just
have a / (root) partition and possibly a /home partition (plus
a swap partition). But it would probably be a good idea anyway
to make a separate partition for /boot.
I am not sure myself under what circumstances the 1024 cylinder
limit applies. I don't know if this is purely a Linux restriction
or a restriction of Linux combine with a typical BIOS. Perhaps some
kind soul will clarify that matter.

As the subject indicates, I'm trying to get syslog

end of which is a DEC VT320 dumb terminal. I
edited /etc/syslog.conf and added the following

*.* /dev/ttyS1
I've also modified the term's settings to be
VT100/VT100ID, and I still can't get it to work.
I'm *not* trying to do serial-console or anything,
I just want my syslog messages redirected to the
DEC VT320 instead of the usual /dev/tty11 (or
whatever it is). Any ideas/suggestions would be
appreciated.

I've been having the same problem. I think the sound suddenly stopping is
due to problems with the dma buffers under Linux...if you have more than
16M of RAM, the dma buffers need to allocate memory below 16M, and this
memory gets taken away while the machine has been up for a while, so the
sound drivers have no memory to use. Try adding 'dmabuf=1' to the options
line in conf.modules, ie, something like this:
options sound dmabuf=1
As for "Can't locate module sound-slot-0" and "sound-service-0-3," I have
this happening too, and I think these need aliases in conf.modules, but I'm
not sure what driver to alias them as (sound? sb? soundcore?) My main
problem is that I can play wavs, mods, etc, but not midi files. I don't
know if this relates to it at all; but I do have the opl3 and ad_lib stuff
configured in conf.modules. My conf.modules looks like:
alias char-major-14 sb
post-install sb /sbin/modprobe "-k" "adlib_card"
options sb io=0x220 irq=5 dma=1 dma16=5 mpu_io=0x330
options adlib_card io=0x388
options sound dmabuf=1
alias synth0 opl3
alias sound sb
alias sound-slot-0 sound
alias sound-service-0-3 sound
Still, no midi. Any ideas about this?

If you check out www.mysql.org they have a breakdown
on why MySQL is better than mSQL (well at least why
you should consider MySQL over mSQL). Also a better
function by function breakdown is available in the
MySQL documentation file within the .tar.gz.

most jobs, even engineering jobs, plant a wintel box on your desk and
