Hi,
If anyone can help me. I need to find a way to boot
Linux RH6.0 without having it bring up the eth0 interface.
I setup the eth0 incorrectly and now it hangs during boot.
thanks in advance. I tried init=single, but it didn't do
anything different.

A voltmeter is used to measure voltage, not produce it. Given the
amount of modification required to a com port to do what you want,
you're better off with dedicated hardware for this task. A simple 555
or later timer can provide the required pulse width and a transistor
to a proper power supply can provide the necessary switched voltage
pulse to the device. The time can be triggered by the com port
handshaking signals. Several years ago, I built an programmer
for 2716 EPROMs on an 8085 CPU single board computer. A simple
circuit did the job a lot easier than trying to modify the com port
and write timing loops to get the correct pulse voltage and width.

You can use the Gnome panel with ANY window manager, not just
Enlightenment. For a while I was running Gnome with Afterstep with no
problems (not sure if Afterstep is "Gnome compliant", but the two
seemed to work well together), then I lost my configuration after yet
another install.
Now I'm using KDE 1.1.1 -- also seems OK.

Hi, Martin! I searched deja and found your article. Have you found the

Date: 1999/06/23
Asked this in hardware and questions already and didn't see
any answers... Has anybody else besides me tried the scsi-spin
utility from hwtools package (available from Debian)???

=========================================================

I'm among those who would like to occasionally shut the noisy
disks down, so I downloaded and installed hwtools_0.4-1.deb which contains scsi-spin.
It sounded very promising but in reality
produces only this:

 kaste:~# scsi-spin --down /dev/sda
 /dev/sda is not a generic SCSI device.

or this:

 kaste:~# scsi-spin --down /dev/sg0
 /dev/sg0 is not a generic SCSI device.

This is so no matter whether I compile generic scsi support in
or load it as a module (and lsmod lists it).

Am I supposed to do something else as well to get this
disk to spin down? There is no documentation and I can't find the source either (which
of course might or might not help given my
pretty limited expertise in this area...). I've looked at
SCSI howto and SCSI Programming Howto and found no clues.
Haven't dared to program it myself yet.

(I've heard about the scsi-idle kernel patch, but would prefer
the above mentioned "solution", if it works somehow, of course.)

Any help or pointers are very appreciated.

There's a command that must be run in order to allow WindowMaker to
set itself up properly. I think it's "wmconfig" but I'm not sure.
It's in the installation instructions. You only need to run it once
from the commandline. From then on it should start up fine.

Read the DHCP mini-HOWTO, or the simple answer, assuming you are the admin
then edit /etc/dhcpd.conf to add a section for the fixed address:
host boxname {
hardware ethernet aa:bb:cc:dd:ee:ff;
fixed-address 192.168.111.222;
}
Restart dhcpd and away you go.

To my knowledge, there's no program available yet that can replace Adobe
Ilustrator or Corel Draw completely, but there are several projects that
go in this direction.
The older programs XFig and Tgif are probably part of every major Linux
distribution.
There's KIllustrator, the drawing program for KOffice:

Then there's GYVE, written in Objective-C and Display Ghostscript
http://www.maru.cs.ritsumei.ac.jp/~sanchan/gyve/
And last, not least there's Sketch, written in a combination of Python
and C
http://www.online.de/home/sketch/
Personally, I prefer Sketch, but I'm biased ;-)

Let me see if I understand:
What you WANT to type is:
$ script.pl
What you HAVE TO type is:
$ perl /dir/script.pl
If this is the case, what you need to do is check the FIRST line of you
your perl script.
It needs to be:
#!/usr/bin/perl -w
Of course, first check to make sure /usr/bin/perl exists. Maybe it's
/usr/local/bin/perl or /bin/perl on your system ?
It HAS TO be the first line of the script.
Also, make sure you didn't forget to:
$ chmod a+x script.pl

Subject: HDD losing data?
Date: Sat, 04 Sep 1999 12:00:37 GMT
Currently we're having a problem with data loss on our main webserver
which is a Linux machine running apache 1.3.9 and kernel 2.2.9 (Linux
/mandrake 6.0).
It installed OK and all the files were set up OK. We had to power down
the machine to move it and when rebooted all the files we in place. We
started copying files over to the webserver and this all worked fine and
we didn't have to reboot at all until we had to move it and when we went
to restart the machine all the files were lost that we had added since
last reboot.
It looks like the machine was caching the files to memory and not
writing to the disk, so that when rebooting the files were lost. This is
a worrying problem and I don't know if this is likely to be a kernel
problem or a hardware problem or a problem with something distributed
with Mandrake.

Huh! Seems. As an experienced sysadmin for many years, with dozens of

Personally, Slackware is my favorite. But until they go to glibc 2.1,
there's no point. I.e. the first act would have to be to throw in 2.1
plus development tools after installing. RH 6.0 did a good job of
solving most of the major 2.1 problems (and leaving thousands of small
ones to be sloved later) so we know how to do it. Debian also has
partially solved the glibc 2.1 business, but is proceeding much more sanely
and carefully with the binary replacements necessary. I would estimate
about 30% of their packages are not yet in 2.1 binary format.
I'd recommend SuSE or Caldera to a first-timer who's not interested in
becoming techically literate. Not RH.
