Oops, this should teach me to read what I recommend to others before
posting :)
Parallel CD-writers _are_ supported! See the HOWTO about how to
configure your system for them.

Look at the man page for rsync. It may not be simple but it
may help you.

I suggest you go to 2.2.13pre4. I'd been having problems with
my network interface slowing down when using kernels > 2.2.5.
The first kernel > 2.2.5 that doesn't have this problem is the
one I suggested. You can get it from

ftp://rpmfind.net/linux/Mandrake/6.1b/Mandrake/RPMS/kernel-2.2.13-2mdk.i586.rpm

You could try the G2 beta for Linux. It works for me. I am running

Actually, I've just had the same problem since upgrading to XFree 3.3.5. I use
the panel's menu to log out, by the way. When I log in using kde (by changing
the options from the login screen), I get no problems whatsoever. Hopefully
there'll be some type of fix for this - I use gnome for my root account and kde
for my everyday stuff.... :)

It is a proprietary SBus interface-- ie it will only work on a Sun Sparc
workstation. It was not clear to me whether you were trying to run it
off a sparcstation or off an Intel box. I am not sure but do not think
tht they ever made an interface for intel. However, the sparcprinter is
actually a Xerox printer, relabeled for Sun. You might be able to get
something from Xerox if not from Sun.

I had some problems during my upgrade but at the end, the upgrade did come
through. If this is your first upgrade for Kernel, you might want to read
on; otherwise, just ignore the rest of this message.

Here are the steps I took to upgrade my Kernel:

1) FTP to ftp.us.kernel.org to get the latest Kernel (2.2.12). Forget
about Patching because you will get 2.2.6 to 2.2.12 and do every single
patch. Save the Kernel in /usr/src.
2) Backup your OS using tools that you have. I used Ghost to backup my OS
first just in case.
3) Rename your current Kernel directory. e.g. Linux to Linux-2.2.5 with
the mv command.
4) Unpack the new Kernel. " tar zxvfp linux-2.2.12.tar.gz "
5) Goto the "New Linux" directory. Do a "make clean" and "make mrproper"
6) Make Xconfig / make config / make menuconfig, etc
7) It would be wise to save your Kernel Configuration before you compile
it.
8) Exit Kernel configuration. "make dep"
9) "make bzImage"
10) copy your bzImage to /boot and give it a name you can recognize. e.g.:
vmlinuz-2.2.12
11) goto /etc and edit " lilo.conf " using at text editor you are
comfortable with. e.g. emacs or vi or another
12) add a section to the lilo.conf and ask it to boot using the new Kernel.
13) goto /sbin and run lilo so the bootloader will recognize the changes
you have added.
14) shutdown and reboot your Linux.
15) Some error messages would occur but they are okay. The following steps
should fix them all.
16) goto /usr/src/linux
17) "make modules" after it is done, "make modules_install"
18) rename your "System.map" in /boot to something like "System.map-2.2.5"
19) copy a new "System.map" from /usr/src/linux to /boot
20) restart your Linux one last time and things should all be working.

Good Luck and thank you for taking the time to read this. Hope they are
useful.

I read that when a process A traces another process B, process B is

Every time I pull out the latest CVS modules, the ./autogen.sh freaks
out with all sorts of errors. I've given up for now, since I'll be
installing Debian this weekend (Yes, I'm finally graduating ;] ), I'll
try again once I have that up and running.

Impressive :). I've got all sorts of crap hanging around that I
really should clean out. It's a habit from my RISC OS days. Even in
1996, I couldn't get my 500MB SCSI drive above 200MB full, so I
started stick all sorts of junk all over the place. The problem is,
there's so much Linux software that I'm filling up too quickly.

the windblows version of opera is not that small if you need java
functionallity. the java plug in is >6+ meg. Add that and a few other
plugins to the base opera code and you are pretty close to the stand
alone netscape version which does most web formats very well , and
netscape is free with open sources.

Actually, *most* driver crashes (and those are seldom enough to start
with) *do not* bring the system down. (Say, a NULL pointer reference that
doesn't happen inside a (usually small) interrupt routine; this generates
a so-called "Oops", but not a kernel panic.)

If the driver is a module, you can even sometimes remove and reinstall the
driver - it depends on what happened to the module use count in the course
of the crash.

Well, hate to burst your bubble, but according to reality Sun bought
StarOffice and made it mostly un-available on the web through their
JavaStore "servlets" and exodus.net's mighty national bottleneck
(http://www.stardiv.com will now take you directly to such a servlet where
YOU TOO can download at < 2KB/sec and have your connection time out after
45 minutes). They're also going to make it available under the "tease
source" SCSL (look but don't touch) which puts severe limits on
distribution (otherwise maybe we'd have some mirrors by now).

If I sound pissed off it's because I've always liked Sun, I've loved their
hardware, and have only now realized that they are either incompetent or
evil (or maybe both). Yes, yes, the licensing is better than under Star
Division, but Sun has no excuse--this isn't exactly a revenue stream for
them.

<grumble>

Anyhow, buy SuSE 6.2 or something. It comes with StarOffice on CD. $30
to SuSE for something off the shelf (with lots of other apps) beats $10 +
S&H to Sun for a "free" CD of StarOffice only.

in lieu of buying the cdrom, how about purchasing a new harddisk to
hold redhat-6.0? (a small harddrive would be approximately the same
price.) put it in the linux box and format it to ext2fs. download
the redhat cd rom to the new harddrive. install from that. this way
you get more hard drive space when you are done.

yes, if by network, you mean your local network. i do it this way. i
wouldn't try it over ppp.

can your win-nt box mount the cd-rom and be an ftp server and let
linux ftp client suck down files off the cd-rom? if yes, then you are
go.

you will want the network boot image.

i do not have any windows boxen, but i do have two machines connected
by ethernet. i have installed redhat over the lan several times. i
find it very handy. the install is unforgiving of network problems so
make sure you are on a local network.

Last time I tried it, it worked very well with Wine - even without a

I have a thinkpad with an mwave soundcard/modem. The modem is a
winmodem, so you won't be able to get that working (go out and buy
another if you must). You CAN get the sound card running though.

First, grab loadlin. You'll be booting Linux from DOS/WIN. Now, Install
the DOS drivers (if you don't have them get them from IBM's site). Now,
boot Linux. THis is what I do on my laptop. In fact, it's the only
reason I have DOS (OpenDOS) installed.

Hope that helped. Search comp.os.linux.portables for more info on mwave

I can't just leave my hosts.allow open like that, any ideas? I have read
the firewall how-to and all the how-tos on Pine, Sendmail, secure pop, etc.

Thanks in advance again!
Aaron

Try executing

mount -t msdos /dev/sda2 /dosf

and perhaps you'll get a helpful error message. BTW, the directory
/dosf does exist, does it?

It is of course impossible to get firm numbers, but the Linux counter
http://counter.li.org/index.html
may provide something like a lower bound and give an impression of the
community evolution. However note that this estimate will be far too
low.

Hello all,
Is anyone familiar with any software for burning to ATAPI CDRoms that will
not require loading the scsi emulator? I have tried that and run into
problems. I was trying to get Xroast working, but have given up.

Any help appreciated.

Hello!

Anyone ever hear of Flexnote notebooks?

I want to know if they're any good and if they work with Linux and OS/2.

Thanks.

Rockridge extensions you mean?

Don't blame the software for limitations of the spec's. mkisofs does
what it does or your cd's wouldn't be readable.

If you're dealing with Windows junk, try '-J' as one of the arguments to
mkisofs, then it will create the Microsoft-designed "Joliet" format.

It hasn't changed in that time.

Well now it depends on what the network is, if it's a home network and you
don't have anything critical running, set the machine that dials out (we'll
call it "dialout") to the default gateway of your ISP, next set the other
computers on the network to use the IP of dialout as thier default gateway.
This way when the other computers want to get out to the net, they basically
ask dialout for the information, dialout retrieves the data and sends it back
to the requesting computer, ofcourse I am masq'ing the IP's in this senerio,
using ipchains.
