On this subject there is NO definitive answer.
"Each with her/his little perversions."
Every person has his own idea what the system should do and finds the
one that fits.
> What I would like to do is to learn Linux inside out, if possible.
If this will be single user box I would suggest one of the two S's.
Slackware or SuSE. Both distributions come with thousands of programms
and it takes time AND effort to delete those that you will never use.
How many editors you need, and how many compilers, and how many window
managers on single user machine???
On the other hand, this IS Linux, so if you RTFM a lot, compile your own
programms from source, and invest time and effort to administer your
setup then the name of the distribution is unrelevant. What you get on
the starting CD is just the base of what YOU will build.

Are you SURE you read the manual?
It's looking for libPropList. Do you have the correct version installed?
WM 0.61.1 requires libPropList-0.9.1. If you wish, the proper
libPropList and WM 61.1 rpms are available from redhat's rawhide site.

Why didn't you just mount the Win-Partition and copy the files there?

Hello everybody!
Can someone help me to decide which distribution to buy? I'm specifically
interested, if there is a difference with the apache server between RH & Suse.
Does one of them support encrypted ('secure') connections?
Thanks,

Subject: Linux as Gateway is not working. Help please.
Date: Wed, 1 Mar 2000 10:16:03 +0100
we have a gateway problem ...
pls help !
okay here are the infos !
the structure is very easy :
Win98 Win98
192.168.10.x 192.168.20.x

fuka2 fuka3
eth0 = 192.168.10.1 eth0 = 192.168.20.1
eth1 = 192.168.1.10 eth1 = 192.168.1.20

----------192.168.1.x---------------
this is what we are going to do ???
fuka2 & 3 are running red hat linux 6.1 ...
if u try to get a ping trough to 10.x subnet ... from win clinet on
...20.x subnet
u just get a timeout !! .......
why ????
In the win98 netconfiguration the gateways 192.168.X.1 are entered.
It is possible to ping 10.1 from Windows 10.x
It is possible to ping 20.1 from Windows 20.x
But its not possible to ping 20.1 from Windows 10.x
So it is not possible to ping 20.x from 10.x
Where is the mistake?
Here are the routingtables and the ifconfigs of the gateways:

They are not, because in a project done by volunteers, nobody is going
to test KDE on the 1000 possible combinations of CPU / RAM / hdd...
and update it with every release.
> Why not be honest and say that it is a memory hog?
Because it's not.
There is one known bug in 1.1.2, though : kfm has memory leaks, when
used
as a web browser. Use netscape instead (which _is_ a memory hog, though)
and wait for konqueror.

I suggest disabling what you don't want to use.
Of course others WM are a lot more lightweight, but they also don't
have all that KDE has. Use what you need, disable the rest
(like sound servers, as an obvious example if you don't have sound).

I am running Linux with X on a 100 Mhz 486 with 24 Mb ram and 64 Mb swap.
Except when I use a program like gimp, only a small amount of this swap is
used (normally about 12 Mb), even when I compile a kernel of gcc. So all
sugestions that you need at least 32 Mb ram and over hundred of megabytes swap
sound very strange to me. Of course there is a limit to the programs you can
run, but you definitely don't want to run KDE, Gnome, StarOffice etc etc. On a
machine with a 486 processor.
My sugestion is: try to get some extra ram, that does not hurt. Backup
everything and create a swap partition of 32 Mb (or use Partition Magic). When
you are running low an memory, running gimp or something like that, just add a
swapfile to temporarily increase the swapspace. I will do this within a few
weeks because I am running low on diskspace for /usr.

as Linux boots see what "hdx" the ls120 has been assign.
Then edit your /etc/fstab file and put a line in as follows:
/dev/hdx /mnt/ls120 vfat noauto,user,rw 0 0
Then goto your /mnt directory and make a file called ls120. (you can use
a editor to make file, but don't put anything in it.)
Then in root which is where you are supposed to be ,typein at the
command line.
chmod 755 /dev/hdx /mnt/ls120.
and you should be ready to go.
In the fstab file you can put ,instead of vfat ext2 for linux files ,
but vfat will read most of you files .

Anybody knows how to write more than 2.1GB in ONE file in ext2fs ?
Is this a physical or logical limitation?
If so, is there any filesystem capable of doing so?
Hints: 50 GB SCSI disk, only one ext2 partition, 4096KB block size.

Precisely. And I am not sure that they had much to do with relative merits,
but
with purely commercial and marketing considerations.

Whoa, you are diving into unfathomable depths! Assessing the merits of one
of those sociological revolutions is much more difficult than doing the same
thing for incompatible VCR formats (as a matter of fact, I think that unlike the
Russian and Chinese revolutions the French one was a good thing, but that's
an altogether different issue.)

I can't say much about Athlon's, as I haven't had any experience in setting
any up. I can say this though - make sure to get 200MHz RAM, as your Front
Side Bus can be only as fast as the RAM.
The Adaptec 2920 (aha/aic78xx chipset) SCSI controller works well.
I have a Matrox G400 (I think) AGP 8Mb video card, which works wuite well.
For VMWare - make sure you have PLENTY of HDD space and RAM. I recommend not
less than 128Mb of RAM, and at allow at least 2, if not 4Gb of HDD space for
each OS you plan to use with VMWare, on top of 3-4Gb for Linux.

Since vfat does not have file permissions, all files and directories get som
default permission when mounting. This allows the owner of the files which
is root by default to write to files and directories.
One sollution is to select one particular user to access the system and set
that user to be the owner of all files (in fstab). This will give one
particular user (in addition to root) access.
If you want all users to have write access the filesystem you can change the
default permission flags for all files and directories (also in fstab).
A sort of combination would be to have a particular group own all files and
set the permissions to give group members write access (all in fstab).
Naturally you need to have/create a group for this purpose and make everyone
that need to be a member of this group.
