I have noticed something "interesting" about the pcmcia source code.
Oberve:
%) cd /usr/src/linux
%) find -name config.h -ls
187781 1 -rw-r--r-- 1 root root 85 Jan 5 1998
./include/linux/config.h
153215 1 lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 18 Sep 10 17:50
./pcmcia-cs-3.0.9/include/linux/config.h -> ../pcmcia/config.h
%) cat /usr/src/linux/pcmcia-cs-3.0.9/include/linux/config.h
cat: /usr/src/linux/pcmcia-cs-3.0.9/include/linux/config.h: No such file or directory
Obviously (and yes, I've tried), any program that includes config.h from
pcmcia-cs-3.0.9/include/linux will fail to compile.
Is there a fix?
Note: If you followup on Usenet, be sure to include c.o.l.misc, as that is
the only group (to which this has been posted) that I read.

Subject: Anyone know about Phatlinux
Date: 15 Sep 1999 02:50:08 GMT
Am completely new to linux, and as an old hand at Amigas but in recent 3
years stuck with Windows 95/98, I look forward to getting back to a more
flexible OS.
I ran across Phatlinux, billed as a new entry that is easy to install and
flexible. Does anyone know about this release?
And, more generally, how might it compare to those distributions that
require a linux partition etc. for speed and for hardware recognition/setup?
I want to do this thing right the first time.

Portability in this context means the ability to do a useful restore
under some other operating system, which you can do with most
normal data files archived by tar. The device nodes files will only
make sense if you restore them on the same operating system, or
in fact do a full restore of the whole system you archived.

We just picked up a Linksys 10/100 ethernet card at Office Depot and are
using
it in my son's linux box with the tulip driver.
We had to download a driver to make the card work.
I don't remember where we got it from - check their site.
Works fine now.

If you can see it under MS-DOS, it should work under Linux too.
It should show up as a serial port.
> 3. We were looking at a Maxtor 13G hard drive tonight. Would this be
> compatible with linux? Could it recognize all 13G?
I'm using two Maxtor IDE drives in my Compaq running RedHat Linux:
hda: Maxtor 71626 AP, 1554MB w/128kB Cache, CHS=789/64/63
hdb: Maxtor 91360D8, 12970MB w/256kB Cache, CHS=26353/16/63
The 1.5MB came with the unit and the 13G I added.
Bought the 13G at Office Depot, took it home, plugged it in, booted up,
no problem.
Hardest part was physically mounting the thing.

I installed a new kernel and now when I boot up it tells me like 20
times that System.map does not have the right kernel version number.
I tried to make myself a System.map by doing
nm vmlinuz
in /boot but that one didn't work. I tried it with a couple other
files in /boot but they didn't work either. Is there anything I need
to do to the system.map and if so what?

I installed Caldera Open Linux 2.2 (bought the CD from
www.LinuxCentral.com) onto my new computer. The only problem is that,
whenever I shut down the computer, and turn it back on later that same
day, it gives me an error stating "No Operating System". So, I re-
installed Caldera Open Linux 2.2 and shut it down after It ran KDE, and
restarted the computer and I still get that problem. How do I fix this?
thank you.

It's much better and easier than 0.99 (oops, I'm dating myself). Just
spend some time with the wealth of written documentation included like
the README's, FAQ's, Howto's, mini-howto's, and man pages. You'll
get it....the fun in Linux is figuring it out.
