Ok, I'm waving the white flag. After upgrading to wu-ftp 6.1 and
modifying my ftp access file according to the docs, I still can't
upload, i.e., I am getting "permission denied on server" error messages
when I try yo upload to the /home/ftp/pub directory. Does someone have
an example ftpaccess file I can look at? Here is mine so maybe you can
spot the problem.

Thanks in advance,
Don

Thanks for all your help.

I can now use the tape drive if I manually load the aic7xxx and st
modules.

But even though I have the 'alias scsi_hostadapter aic7xxx' line in
/etc/conf.modules, the module is not automatically loaded on re-boot.

Do I have to use '/sbin/mkinitrd' to generate a new ramdisk image?

Thanks again,

Nope, I work at Draper (which is next to MIT) as a part of Northeastern
University's cooperative education program. I am a UNIX sysadmin, thus
I would like to further my knowledge at home. At work, I work on
Solaris 2.51, 2.6, and also Digital UNIX.

OK, thanks for all the help. I have Mandrake 6 on cd, that's why I
didn't know about grub. I was planning on downloading the 7.1 ISO from
mandrake's website. I'll let you know if I have any problems with the
install. I have a number of ide and scsi devices, and also 2 USB
devices and an SB Live, i heard there was some probs with that. But
I'll see what happens.

how ist the 'combined-log' EXACTLY generated via

so that i can get detailed log from every virtual host?
i use: transferlog logs/access1_log

is ran from an active terminal. Terminal parameters?? Can someone tell me

Maybe most of the people are trying to use the 'other' linuxes for the
same purpose, but RedHat, I think, is a very configurable linux. It lets
me configure it as a server as well as a normal workstation without any
use.

not quite... if u aren't flexible, I don't see the point. Better stick
with something like win9* or winNT then... they require very less effort

Just so that there is atleast *one* post regarding successes, and not
problems, here's mine :

Redhat 6.0 - stock kernel, no patches ( It works, and I turn on only those
services that I need ).
I run them on multiple computers.

First, i tried a P100 with questionable hardware that used to cause Explorer
to crash .
6.0 went in , and after giving it the io/irq parameters, the ethernet card
was functional.
Then I put in my hardware modem, and followed the Net-3, ppp, isp hookup and
modem How-To's.
After reading through the IPMASQ howto, I got my little home lan MASQing
through it.
Sure, it took me several weekends, but this was the first time.

When I put it into a P2 350, It was done in half an hour. Not only could I
use lynx to go through the local modem, but I could go through the
firewall/gateway as well. Added to that, X windows was running albiet in
640x480 : I have a G200 . I spent the weekend setting up the monitor
parameters. From then on, things have been going fine. That is until I
installed win2k, which trashed the ext2 filesystem . Luckily I'd backed up
to my other computer using Samba ( which after reading the docs was a
breeze ) . This time, I did the install, copied over the config files and
was up and running 40 minutes flat ! Lilo boots w98 w2k and linux just fine,
and it's housed in my /boot partition ( /dev/hda1 ).

Now comes the intersting part :
I got an amd756 based mainboard ( GA7IXe ) and a Slot A TBird 700 . After
flashing the bios , I tried win98. No go had to reinstall , along with the
accompanying mess of agp drivers and such. After spending 16 hours with it,
I finally got fed up and booted linux. It gave me the login prompt, as usual
( I alwasys boot into 3 ) . typed startx ( default depth 32 bpp ) and braced
for a crash or something. What I got was the welcome wave file playing
through the speakers, and my usual 1024x768 screen with a 1600x1200 virtual
screen. When I started Netscape, I had no trouble getting to outside
websites ( networking was up, as was the samba server- it had already
mounted my remote shares.). It was as if nothing had happend, apart from the
fact that things were faster.

No complaints, no fuss, nothing. And all I did was just boot the damn thing.
By the way, I'd forgotten to disable dma , and it's working just fine.

The really interesting thing is that both win98 and win2k (<insert
propaganda here> ) had to be reinstalled to work properly.

Sure RedHat screwed up on a couple of fronts.
1) the autoboot.bat file will not work as it is.
2) ppp needs some entries in the aliases file.

But remember : It worked without any changes, although the underlying
hardware was different than when it was installed.

/dev/pg? is parallel port atapi emulation device. If your scanner is
connected to ide or scsi intercae, and not to the parallel port, you
should check why cdrecord looks at /dev/pg6, instead of /dev/sg6.

You can try the "slram" patch, which lets you use the extra memory as
(relatively) very fast swap space:

Do not assume that all dependencies are incorporated correctly. The
dependency mechanism is kind of like "Plug-and-Play". It is a lofty
and worthwhile goal, but it will continue to be flaky because it is
very difficult to assure formal correctness and it is nearly impossible
to obtain full test coverage. Think of dependencies as sort of like
that little paperclip in MS Word. 1/3 of what it says is useful, 1/3
is useless or dangerous, and 1/3 is missing.

As for modules, you need to take a look at the howto. You cannot
work effectively with modules unless you know how to use insmod,
modprobe, lsmod, etc. It also helps to know about depmod, kerneld
and /etc/conf.modules. If it is any comfort to you, I find the module
docs to be a little fragmented and hard to use. I am currently
preparing a HOWTO which will say something about modules.

In my opinion, it can be useful. Once I had a 486 with 4MB
ram, and Linux ran acceptably. When I upgraded it to 20MB,
it became much slower. Here is an expert from
/usr/doc/HOWTO/INFO-SHEET on a RH box:
