Well, you do not tell us how you use your modem-- what commands, etc.
Note the the default rate is 9600 bd, and tht is what you will get
unless you use one of recognised serial port rates

This has nothing to do with it. Why do you think it thinks that?
Remember that the default compilation for Linux is for a 386.

The GIMP (GNU Image Manipulation Program) can open and save .psd
files, but I don't know which versions it supports. It's free (both
senses of the word) so it won't hurt to try it out.

There are several fax packages for Linux/Unix. If you specify
exactly what you want (single user? server for a LAN?) people might
be able to give better advice.

I've been very happy with the efax package.

I downloaded the Real Audio player version 5.0 for Red Hat from real.com
and installed it on my Debian system using Debian's rvplayer
installer. (D/loading the Red Hat version is as per Debian's
instructions, BTW.)

The installation went fine. No depedency problems, no error
messages. However, whenever I try to invoke the player from the
command line with rvplayer, all that happens is that I receive a
cryptic error message saying "Segmentation fault."

Since there's no way to bump up the verbosity level of the error
messages from rvplayer, I have no idea what's causing the
problem. All the libraries are there, in the right place and on
my library path.

Anybody else had this problem? Any suggestions for fixes?

Hi

I'm back again with more problems.

I bought a new 56K modem and it only operates at about 14,4k in my LINUX
system.
I had no trouble using a 58k modem with Windows, so I know it is with my
present system.

I seems to me the trouble is that my LINUX thinks I have a 386 as my as
my cpu.
I tried to change my LINUX kernel , but the books say that I have to use
either menuconfig or xconfig.
my /usr/src/linus directory has neither of these. I have reinstalled
LINUX from my cdrom about 5 times selecting different packages and can't
seem to get these two programs.

I'm dead in the water can any one help this old guy?

Subject: How to query fs on mystery floppy?
Date: 15 Sep 1999 04:58:46 GMT

Hello,

I have an unlabeled floppy disk on my desk and would like to see what files it
contains. The simple answer is to mount it and run the ls command. But the
mount command takes the file system type as an argument and I don't know which
to specify since the floppy could be in either msdos or ext2 format. While I
could mount it each way and see which one works, I was hoping for a more
elegant solution. Is there some handy utility for determining which file
system a floppy is using? Would this also work if the floppy was a boot/root
rescue disk created by copying an image using dd?

Thanks for your help.

You need the uncompressed kernel image "vmlinux". See the top-level
kernel source Makefile to see how to turn the "nm" output into System.map
(although one should already be in that directory ...).

I'm tried to install RH6.0 on my machine (K6,166, 64mb ram, new hard drive,
etc), installation went as planned, I've installed RH5.2 without problem on
the machine before, and upgraded that installation to 6.0 before.
Unfortunately one of my drives crashed and I was forced to reformat and
start over. My configuration is essentially the same except for a newer
ethernet card (which doesn't have any problems).

As I mentioned, installation goes without a problem. When I reboot and try
to boot into linux, I get these errors....

/****** start **********/
Total of 2 processors activated (330.96 BogoMIPS)
enabling symmetric IO mode... ...done
Enabling IO_APIC IRQs
init IO_APIC IRQs
IO-APIC pin 0, 20, 21, ..., 255 not connected.
...MP-BIOS bug: 8254 timer not connected to IO_APIC
...trying to set up timer as ExtINT... (..found pin 0)... failed.
...trying to set up timer as BP IRQ... failed.
kernel panic: IO_APIC + timer doesn't work!
In sweeper task - not syncing
/****** end **********/

I've checked all my hardware, and not that it's necessarily a good
benchmark, but I have Windows running on the same machine without any (you
know what I mean) problems.

Someone suggested trying a different version of linux (RH5.2, or anything
with a 2.0.* kernel). I haven't gotten around to it, I wanted to see if
there was any input on this problem before I did that.

Soooo, if anybody has any clue as to what's going on, I would love to hear
it. If there are any possible solutions, I would love to hear them as well.

Thanks for any help,
Pat

Hi,

You might have something like emacs-nox instead of emacs. Try typing
"emacs" and hitting the [TAB] key twice or three times. In this case the
names should show up. You can also check if you have emacs installed by

rpm -qa | grep emacs

and see the output. If you have emacs already, then you cannot install
the new one since rpm will say no. In that case, you should upgrade
emacs by

rpm -Uvh emacs-19.34.-4.i386.rpm

When I tested the system to connect a Dumb Terminal (Text Terminal)

  S1:2345:respawn:/sbin/getty ttyS1 DT9600 vt100

But when we connect the COM port to PAD/Asynchronous port and try to

I would be grateful if someone could help me out.

Alternatively, if you specify "init=/bin/sh" on the lilo prompt you
are dumped directly into the shell. Then you need to remount root
readwrite "mount -norw,remount /" and you can modify the password file
including fixing the root password if you forgot what it is.
