Just be warned that this pretty much nukes your (albeit questionable)
Xwindows security. You might want to keep it to

xhost +mymachine

but if you are really worried about security, then use ssh to the local
machine with X forwarding enabled.

Right now i have redhat 6.1 and i have it set up so that it goes straight into x
on boot. This works fine. But when i switch to a different virtual console, it
is always just a text shell, and i can't get into x from it. If i type startx
it says x is already running (which it is). Is there any way to access x from
these other virtual consoles? Thanks.

Subject: Re: samba problem

Hi Jim,

I ran into the same problem and found out that it's caused by Windows 98
wanting to use Challenge Host Authentication Protocol (CHAP) to avoid
sending plain text passwords over the network. Samba, by default,
doesn't use this, so it doesn't understand the passwords that are being
sent.

If you're on a secure network, you can make Windows stop using CHAP by
going to the /tools/mtsutil directory on your Win98 CDROM and
right-clicking on "ptxt_on.inf", then choosing "install". Since you're
now using public shares, that should be OK for now. If you go to the MS
Knowledge base, and search for Linux you'll find an article on this
subject. The URL is:
http://support.microsoft.com/support/windows/readme/Win98se/w98semtsutiltxt.asp?LNG=ENG&SA=ALLKB&FR=0#PTXT_ON

If you were not on a secure network, you can tell Samba to use CHAP.
There are several things involved in this, so it would be best to go to
the www.samba.org page and find the documentation on that.

The resources you're trying to access will require the Unix passwords,
just as though you were trying to log on to your Linux console as a
certain user, and access a directory or a file. You'd need to be
authorized to do so.

HTH,

Bill

Well, you can. You just need to have one small partition inside first 8 Gb
(100 MB will suffice) as your /boot where you will keep the kernel. That is
if you want to boot regularly from HDD using lilo. This is limitation of
BIOS, it cannot boot from higher then 1024 cylinder. You can get around
that, but in this case you will be forced to use boot disk. You may set your
BIOS to boot a:,c:,smth in sequence and then boot into NT just regularly and
into linux after you insert floppy (just insert and hit power). You can find
instructions in bootdisk HOWTO probably.

The loss of serial data is due to some disabling of interrutps etc during
disk access. Not doing so apparently caused data corruption on some IDE
disks or controllers (probably very old ones). This can be disabled with
the hdparm program. Although it is not entirely without risk to do so, my
now four years old system never had any problem with this (My new system has
SCSI :-) ).
Take a look at the hdparm man page and it should be obvious what I am
talking about, I'm not at home now so I can't check what options it is I
use.

The program you require is called sox. It may already be on your Linux
system as it is included in many distribions already.

For details on how to use it `man sox'.

I had nearly the same problem with my Opti mad16 pro (opti 82C929 chipset),
it played midi-files only on one channel, the left one I think, both under
windows and under linux. I tried several things to get it to work, but
nothing helped.
Maybe the chipset is flaky there, and its something you have to live
with....

no help for you, of course, but just a little hint.....

That's odd. A typical Linux on x86 distribution is mostly
binaries in ELF format. This kernel can't execute them.
Your module loader is probably ELF, so you can't even put
BINFMT_ELF in a module. Try setting CONFIG_BINFMT_ELF
and see if the new /usr/src/linux/arch/i386/boot/bzImage
works better.

I had something similar, but i cant remember what was wrong.
two possible culprits are
        /dev/modem -> /dev/ttyS0
check that you send things to the right port.
enable debug in pppd and see if there is a module not found message
        in the log

Yes that was true. Now I use g++, and everything compliles and linkes well,

The executable is 130kb large, isn't this quite large for such a simple thing?

This is done with 'export PATH=....' You can simply at some directories by
setting the command 'export PATH=PATH:....' to your ~/.bashrc file.

You'll probably want the parallel port.
Make it a module if you're worried about your kernel size...

I would add CMD640 if I were not very sure I did not have
anything based on it.

Module, if you were thinking about running a network
off this thing.

That makes no sense to me. What good is a configured
low level driver for NCR5380 without the SCSI driver?
If you have an NCR5380, turn on CONFIG_SCSI
and CONFIG_SCSI_GENERIC_NCR5380.
Then set the _PORT or _MEM.

You'll need CONFIG_SERIAL to see your modem, internal

I believe you need UNIX98_PTYS for the X Window System

Looks like a security hole. Module.

AUTOFS_FS makes little sense without NFS_FS, eh?

Need Windows 95 "network neighborhood" volume sharing?
At least make a module.

deleting .Xauthority and .ICEauthority in the faulty account did not

playing with xhost+ did not help

Finally I got really frustrated, backed up the files in the faulty

solution of all and I still do not know what went wrong but at least I
am back to normal.
