Hallo.. I've been trying to set my serial mouse in RH6.1, but always fails. I'm using
Laptop, which has PS/2 mouse built in. I'm already using the PS/2 port for my keyboard
so i want to use the serial mouse.
The dmesg shows that Linux detected the PS/2 mouse Port, even though I disabled it via
bios.
I've changed it manually via Xconfigurator but get stuck everytime I was entering X
Windows.
Anybody knows what happened ? It's only small thing but yet, buggin'

You can do that if you are running NIS. RTM for details.

Search for fnlib in that directory under libraries or something, IIRC.

O.S. Linux Release 2.0.36
I have been asked to look a a little Linux server
problem but I dont have a lot of amin experience.
The problem is that it takes 3 to 4 minutes after telnetting
to the Linux box (from any machine on the network) before
a login prompt appears. I also note that when running the "who"
command, it takes a really long time to resolve. Running
the "users" command is not slow.
Im telnetting from an NT machine to the linux box.
There is no /etc/wtmp or /etc/utmp files which (I think)
who looks for. The file does exist in /var/run
I have a good deal of experience developing
on Linux although I have never dealt with networking.
Any help would be greatly apreciated.

You should think of typing "make clean" ou "make mrproper" between "make
dep" and "make bzImage", to avoid compiling your new kernel with some object
files of an older kernel. Have a look to the Kernel HOWTO to see the diff.
between "make clean" and "make mrproper".

If you typed "make bzImage", you don't need to do a "make bzdisk" (which
will do the same plus copy the new kernel to a floppy), but after "make
bzImage" you'd rather type "make bzlilo", which will do all the
<kernel-copy-and-lilo> stuff.
Hope it'll help.

I understand your pain <G>, but it's not entirely Window's fault (I
can't _believe_ I'm actually typing that!). IIRC, this kind of "look"
is derived from IBM's CUA (Common User Access -?-) and has been copied
at nauseam ever since (menu bar at top with 'file' and 'edit', scroll
bars as we know them today, and whatnot). It was supposed to work
equally well for character-based apps as their GUI-cousins.
Still, it works.
Kinda.
BTW, StarOffice _definitely_ doesn't look like the rest of the Windows
field: the integrated, all-in-one approach has AFAIK only been done by
Claris Works (it works for them, because Claris is such a cute and
_small_ program. It doesn't for StarOffice, for exactly those reasons.
IMHO, of course).

G'Day,
I am currently running RED HAT LINUX version 6.0 and I am experiencing a
problem with KPPP. After having it up and running for several weeks I
now get the following error irespective of the ISP that I connect to;
"Sending Failed
a SMTP error occured
Command:DATA
Response 503 Valid RCPT TO <recipient> must precede DATA
Return Code 503"
This initial looks like KPPP has stoped reading the recipients address
from the 'to' field. However I am able to send Email via netscape using
several different ISP smtp addresses. I can also send EMail via telenet
using port 25. So SMTP appears to be set up correctly.
Any body have any bright ideas?

Is it possible, at all, to use multiple modems to connect to my ISP (with 2

If I'm downloading whatever, and surfing at the same time, if the first
modem is full up, it rolls over into the second modem. (called

getting it working? (Instructions, or a pointer in the direction of some

Is anyone aware of a read/write driver for ext2 fs for any MS OS?
I am toying with an emergency setup whereby I dump the entire server to
a removable IDE disk. In case of a complete server failure, I can plug
the removable drive into a workstation and at least have crippled
access.
To make this work, I need read/write access for ext2 for large
partitions (right now, 14 GB - eventually, 40+ GB) from MS Win 9x if at
all possible, MS Win NT is a second choice.

There is a gamma adjustment fot the ink saturation in GS:
%!
/.fixtransfer {
currentcolortransfer 4 {
mark exch
dup type dup /arraytype eq exch /packedarraytype eq or
1 index xcheck and { /exec load } if
0.333 /exp load
] cvx 4 1 roll
} repeat setcolortransfer
} bind odef
.fixtransfer
/setpagedevice { setpagedevice .fixtransfer } bind odef
the 0.333 is a good starting point. Usage:
gs [options] gamma.ps filetoprint.ps
I can't help you with the other stuff.

Note that the original poster was initially talking about CPU, not about
RAM.
There _are_ a lot of combinations. CPU, RAM, hdd, and very importantly
what apps you run
and what you do with them.
> > > Why not be honest and say that it is a memory hog?
> >
> > Because it's not.
>
> why don't you give us output from top on your machine to judge for

That would certainly not help !
1 - a development machine has nothing to do with a end-user machine.
It has to be much more powerful, otherwise changing one line in KOffice
would
take 1 month to recompile. And the code is slower there, because of all
the debug output. Released versions of KDE, it correctly compiled
(--disable-debug
or -DNDEBUG, which Linux distros do), have no debug output.
2 - top (or ps) are not an accurate way of measuring memory usage, far
from it.
May I refer you to
http://developer.kde.org/documentation/other/shared_memory.html ?
It explains why you can get tricked by what you read in top or ps,
because
of the huge quantity of code being in shared libs. It is shared, so it
doesn't
eat that much memory, but since ps shows it for each and every
process...
3 - I guess you are talking about KDE 1.1.2. KDE 2.x has a design that
improves
the way memory is used, because it is a lot more modular. In KDE 1.x,
when you start
the desktop, you start kfm, which is a file manager and web browser !
In KDE 2.x, the desktop itself is a different program, and even if you
start
the file manager, you don't get the web browser in memory. konqueror
opens it as a shared library only when you need to browse an HTML page.
Hope this helps.

Do you use the -O6 option with the compiler? I've had a similar
problem with unresolved symbols and using the -O6 option eliminated
this problem.
I don't know what the -O6 option exactly does (I tried to look it up,
but found NULL)
What I do know is this:
Insmmod loads the image of the module in kernel-memory and before
running init_module() it has to fill in the adresses of external
variables and functions. This is because the module at compile-time
doesn't know exactly where in memory those variables and functions
are when it is inserted into the kernel. These adresses may change
with every little change in the kernel or the way the kernel is
compiled.
The insmod program will look for these adresses in some file in the
/proc directory. But when you don't compile with -O6 it can't find
ALL the adresses. I know, it sounds strange to me also, but if anyone
knows more about this, please tell us!
Greetz,
Paul

It sounds really strange. Unresolved symbols in modules come from 4 sources:
1. the programmer forgot to define __KERNEL__ and MODULE.
These symbols are used by a lot of header files to insert kernel specific stuff
2. the programmer forgot to give the gcc the commandline switch -O2
The gcc starts inlining at this tuning level. Inlining is needed to eleminate some
unused symbols in the code
3. the user try to insmod a module for a another kernel then the module was compiled
for.
4. the programmer forget to define some symbols which she declared before
I wouldn't recommand you using switches higher then O2. The compiler may inline some
functions which shouldn't be inlined and the error rate of the comiler raises
exponentiell (thats my humble experience)

Nope, I dont have a clear picture but ...
man login gives the explanation of how the path is set when a user
logs in and which shell is invoked.
Then need to look at man <shell> to see what scripts are invoked
for login vs non-login shells and for interactive shells.
man bash has a clear section on "INVOCATION" that explains this.
Obviously normally a user will login get the path set by login,
and then the various scripts run for an interactive, login shell.
Any new shell eg su , will get a interactive , non-login shell,
and have the script(s) run for that.

Both drives should have entries in /dev. The CDR should be /dev/hdd and the
DVD should be /dev/hdc. If you go into your /dev directory, I imagine there
will be symlink call /dev/cdrom pointing to one of these.
Just create a new symlink for whichever device doesn't work. Assuming this
is the DVD drive:
To create a symlink, use (as root, in the /dev directory)
ln -s hdc dvd
You will then have a device called /dev/dvd which is an alias for your dvd
drive. If you then edit /etc/fstab (again as root) and change the reference
to /dev/cdrom to /dev/dvd, that should make your dvd work. Flip this around
if it's the CD-R that doesn't work.
My RH6.1 system has nifty CDROM automounting; I'm not sure if this will work
on the second drive automatically. I suspect not, but my X is broken at the
moment, so I can't check. Any takers?

Right, it most likely has to do with the users, databases and hosts files

I want to set only a directory for public access, say, only the directory
"/pub"
is visible to the public, and for downloading software.
Other directories, such as /home/ftp/etc, home/ftp/lib ... I do not want any
one can
see and access them.
How can I carry it out ???
Thanks
