Subject: sound modules aren't loaded automatically
Date: Wed, 22 Mar 2000 20:59:02 GMT
I have kernel 2.2.13 and opl3sa2 sound card
When I "insmod" modules by hand
insmod soundcore
insmod sound
insmod mpu401
insmod ad1848
insmod opl3sa2 io=0x100 irq=7 mss_io=0x530 mpu_io=0x300 dma=0 dma2=3
insmod opl3 io=0x388
and then run "cdplay"
my sound card work fine and I hear the music.
But modules are not loaded automatically when just run "cdplay".
My /etc/conf.modules contains lines
alias char-major-14 opl3sa2
pre-install opl3sa2 modprobe "-k" "ad1848"
post-install opl3sa2 modprobe "-k" "opl3"
options opl3sa io=0x100 irq=7 mss_io=0x530 mpu_io=0x300 dma=0 dma2=3
options opl3 io=0x388
/lib/modules/2.2.13/modules.dep seems Ok.
While booting kernel doesn't write something strange to log files.
When I used kernel 2.2.4 the result was the same.
What's wrong?

Running Gnome on Red Hat 6.0, I type in my user password to
reboot or shutdown. Maybe user password is OK if that user
ID has shutdown priviledges, but root password is required
otherwise (?).

Oops - I did not mean to say that you should not have asked; rather,
there may be some other solutions available if you search dejanews.
OK, time for some other tricks:
# lpc
and type ? to see what you can do.
Try
lpc> abort lp0
and you should see
printing disabled
no daemon to abort
Now type
lpc> up lp0
and you should see
printing enabled
daemon started
lpc>
If you see anything else let us know.
Do a man lpc and lpd to see what they do.
What's your printcap look like?
# cat /etc/printcap and post it.
This printer is connected to the parallel port, right?
What version of linux are you running? Also post the results of
# lsmod
(man that too to see what it does.)
(Yes the learning curve is steep....)

Copy/paste in emacs you don't like? I'll have to admit one thing I
don't like about vi that you can do in emacs is place a region mark in
the middle of a line. vi only allows you to yank words, whole lines,
and groups of lines which isn't quite as precise as is sometimes
needs.

AFAIK, there's some commandline option to defrag to move those
files off too.. And I think if those files are referred to by
their physical location by some program, it ain't worth keeping
that stupid program anyways.. get rid of that.
I have seen some of the windows system files (io.sys etc..) being
shown as unmovable, and the above rule applies to them too. After
all, you're going to install a real operating system and then
you would not need windows :-)

I cannot speak of "games" in general, but FWIW here's my experience,
maybe you can use it. I've recently tried one of my old-time favorites,
The Incredible Machine, under both Dosemu 1.0.0 with either MS-DOS 6.22
and FreeDos beta4, and one of the nightly builds of Wine (sometime last
week). Just curious if it worked. Well, it did...sort of. The screen was
all mixed up, with the lower half flashing like crazy, to the point
where the game wasn't playable. Same thing in all cases. Maybe it's just
this particular game that's screwy, but then, chances are many of these
older programs are, using all kinds of hacks which just happened to
work, natively.

I think the problem is not AGP. My PC at home has an AGP card made by
ATI and works great. My PC here at work is an IBM with an S3Trio3D on
the mainboard and it was a major pain to get X working. I haven't
tried version 4, but the version 3.3.6 README.S3V says "Please note
that Trio3D support is an initial release and not very well tested".

I had just the opposite problem, Disk Druid wanted to put everything in
one big extended partition and would not let me make a primary /boot
partition if (per instructions) I set a swap first. So I had to go
to another vt (before Disk Druid screen), use mknod to make /dev/hda and
then Linux fdisk to set partitions the way I wanted them. Then I could go
back to the GUI, go to the Disk Druid screen and assign things to the
Linux partitions I had already created.

Unless you download the latest LILO, you need a /boot partition (16 meg)
completely below cyl 1024. But you can put everything else including swap
in 1 extended, even coexisting with FAT32 logical partitions.
>I have tried in Expert using Fdisk to create the two primaries

I haven't tried expert mode, I simply went to another vt (Ctrl-Alt-F2)
to set up partitions with fdisk, before I even got to Disk Druid. But you
have to know how to use mknod, because there were no hd's in /dev.

Does anyone know how to turn off the backlight automatically during screen
blanking in the console on Sony PCG-F450 (TFT display) with NeoMagic 256AV
video. I have tried all the usual setterm -powersave and -powerdown
settings (which work for the regular monitor on my main PC). The screen
does blank, but the backlight remains on. Note, even when in blanks in
Win98, the backlight remains on, however, it does go completely black when
it blanks in X.
This has ACPI which is newer than the old APM, so the Fn-D that works in
Win98 and older F3xx models to manually blank the screen and apm -S
standby mode do not work in Linux. It will go into deep suspend (apm -s
or Fn-Esc), but I am just trying to turn off the screen while the CPU
keeps working in the background.

For some reason, if Xconfigurator runs at install, it will generate
bad/silly XF86Config files. While Gerald's suggestions have a lot of
merit, you'll find it easier to just switch to a text console
(Ctrl-Alt-F1), log in as root, and enter "Xconfigurator". It'll hold your
hand somewhat, though you might have to edit /etc/X11/XF86Config manually
after that and change the color depth to 32-bit.
You didn't tell us the exact make and model of your graphics card. Please
note that Xfree86 has problems with certain cards, especially SiS and
Trident cards. If you have one of those cheap pieces of junk, sell it and
get a nice Matrox G200 or ATi Xpert98, since you seem to care about
graphics a bit....

To get a dynamically assigned IP address, you probably should run dhclient
(or something similar, like pump) at boot time. You should be able to do
this painlessly.
1. Become root
2. Run YaST
3. "Network Configuration"
4. look for "Should the network be configured through DHCP?" Say YES.
5. exit YaST.
6. # /sbin/init.d/dhclient start
(see, no need to reboot, unless you really really want to. A few things
may have changed; I'm using SuSE 6.1 not 6.3 and they may be using pump
now instead of dhclient...)
Connecting to a Lose2k machine, eh? Check the Samba information in your
SuSE manual if you're accessing shared directories on the Lose2k machine.
SWAT (Samba Web-Based Admin Tool) might be your friend here. Telnet and
ftp to the Lose2k should work fine. HTH, HAND.

Very few ISPs "cater" to Linux
even if they run their server under Linux.
I don't know of any that distribute a browser
that will run under Linux for example.
I had to drop GTE because I couldn't post news articles
using Netscape Communicator.

Subject: Tuning X
Date: Thu, 23 Mar 2000 09:50:00 +1100
Dear People,
I would like to thank those out there who took the time to answer earlier
queries of mine which allowed me to get Xwindows up for the first time.
I am now tuning Xwindows for best resolution, refresh rates and color depth.
I have XFree86 v3.3.5 on Redhat v6.1. My video card has a S3Trio3D/2X
chipset with 4M VRAM. The monitor is not listed in any of the Xsetup/config
utilities but is a 'KTX' 15" on which I am able to run 1024X768 in MS
Windows (unsure of refresh rates). Anyway I have had a lot of trouble
getting good color depth in X. Does anyone know what server is best and
which monitor I should select in XF86Setup or Xconfigurator?
Finally can one run XF86Setup from within X (terminal window) and have the
changes actually take effect, if so then do you need to reboot or just exit
X. Oh while I am on that, I edited my inittab file to change the line
id:5:initdefault: to read a 3 instead of the 5. This now brings up a prompt
asking which run level I want at startup. I thought the 3 would default to
character-mode on startup. I don't know what the problem is.
Yours in Linuxing, Scott.

I'm sorry. It's my fault. I just got barked at by a couple guys elsewhere
because I didn't sweat enough blood before asking questions. I thought I was
doing pretty good for just starting out.
While I start checking out the other tricks, here is what I have.
6 year old Pentium 90 that I had been running NT 3.51 on. I got tired of it
crashing so removed the os ... leaving all my data on FAT partitions, along
with a few Windoze applications, added memory bringing the box up to 64 MB and
put a new 13.6 GB harddrive as the master with the thought of later using the
old 1 GB drive for a 486/66 that was networked to this machine and installing
Linux on it too, removing WFWG.
The printer is indeed connected to a parallel port (the only one) on this
box. I read all the HOW-TOs and posts here and on other ng, Yesterday I
finally figured out why the printer wasn't working and fixed it. Then I did
the stupid thing that caused this problem.
Okay, now I'll get busy trying all the things you've suggested and I'll post
the results later.
Thanks!

O.K., someone helped me figure out
what the problem was. ch2_tar.tar was
what Windows renamed a file called ch2.tar.gz.
So I needed to fix the name so that it would
be recognized that the file needed to be gunzipped
and then untarred. Under windows one can
use .tgz.
Thankyou to everyone who posted an answer,
Binyomin
