Subject: Windows98 sees Linux-disk as CD
Date: Fri, 26 Jan 2001 18:20:17 +0100
Hello,
If you wonder why I ask this question here, it's because I know where
one can get an answer.
I installed Linux on a separate disk, a slave on the same ide-port as
the master. Used Linux fdisk to partition it. LILO MBR on the master
disk.
Now Windows sees these partitions as CD-ROMS.
If you wonder why I care, it's because I have a cd-writer too, and HP's
burning software is not so bright, in so far that it allways writes to
the first CD-device it finds, burner or not. Now I wouldn't like to
burn my Linux installation.
So, if one of you sees the light at the end of the tunnel, and wants to
share his illuminicence ...
Thanks,

Verifying the owner by any other name would smell as sweet.
Call it what you will. If you install it, it won't continue to run
unless you dial-up and register it with Microsoft.

Tell that to some government agencies of some d*mb-*ss countries that

Man files can be a little deep sometimes. If you want a quick rundown of
the basics, here ya go.
Just as a reference for tar:
c - create a tar
f - specify the filename after this
x - extract a tar
z - uncompress before extraction
v - verbose mode
... so ...
To create a myfiles.tar containg all the files in ~/myfiles
tar cf myfiles.tar ~/myfiles/*
To extract the original tar file into the current directoroy
tar xf myfiles.tar
Same as above only it shows you what it is doing
tar xvf myfiles.tar
To compress that tar into myfiles.tar.gz
gzip myfiles.tar
To extract the tar.gz file into the current directory and show what it is
doing
tar zxvf myfiles.tar
Hope that helps,

Why not make use of the magic of open-source software and download the
source code for the dd command. Then you can see how it opens up files. Or
use truss. I think that truss MAY show you the arguments passed to fopen(),
but then I haven't used it for a long time. I think it may be called ntruss
or struss or something like that in linux. Either way, good luck.

I won't be buying any more M$ junk. The last junk I bought from them was
win95 and then I found a real OS. I'm happy to say I'm M$ FREE!!
M$ to some extent is shooting themselves in the foot so to speak with
this new scheme as well as the .NET scheme. Since a lot of people have
no reason to upgrade every time M$ comes out with a new version. I know
people who still use win95 because it does what they need it to do.
It will turn more businesses and people to alternative systems to get
away from the M$ licensing costs and though it may slow it down some, it
probably won't stop the copying like they are trying to do.

Oh, joy! So if, say, my harddisk crashes and I buy a new, larger one,
then reinstall, presumably I'd need a new key. Why do I think this
wouldn't be painless?
Fortunately, anyone who's used both Office 97 and 2K knows how little
functionality was added in the latter. No pressing need for any
upgrades any time soon.
I can't wait until Microsoft starts charging by the CPU instruction.

You could make a symlink.
ln -s /path/to/ftp_send_aktuell.sh /bin/ftp_send
Then use something like this. (may not be correct syntax)
find / -type f -maxdepth 1 \( -name "*" \) \-exec ftp_send {} \;

False. While it is certainly true that open software is much more
internationally developed than Microsoft software is, the GPL was
done in the US, the FSF (GNU) is centered in the US. Without the
existance of GNU, Linux wouldn't have been started. The Linux kernel
was started by a Finn who since then has moved to California,
and today there are still a large number of US people involved,
including "Maddog" Hall (unofficially the second in command after
Linus, I would guess). The infamous RMS is in the US and started
at MIT. The Gnome project was started by a Mexican. Enlightenment was
started by an Australian, KDE was started by (I think) Germans.
The opensource world is diverse and not US-centric, but definately
has a *lot* of US people in it. It just doesn't have the
disproportionate amount of US representation we are used to seeing
in other areas. The US only accounts for 5% of the world's population,
and so it's not surprising at all that it doesn't account for the
majority in a system where anyone in the world can have a hand in
participating. *No* single country has a majority of developers in
the opensource world and that's the way it should be.

Build it from source. OpenSSH doesn't require glibc2.2, in fact it
doesn't even require glibc2. If you build it against the libraries on
your system it will work fine. The fact that it won't be in your rpm
database *probably* won't be as much trouble as breaking the glibc
dependencies for everything on the system, unless you have software
installed from RPM that depends on OpenSSH.

Don't believe in copyright, do you? The license is pretty clear.Don't
blame Microsoft for enforcing their legal rights. If you don't like it,
don't use it. If you oppose copyrights in general, work for changes in
the law.

Buy one copy for one PC and make them share.

Nothing like a little gratuitous anti-Americanism.
A little history and geography. Unix was invented where? System V and
BSD where? FreeBSD where? X where? The Free Software Foundation began
and is based where? GNU software pre-linux wasn't open source? Emacs
wasn't the first widely used open source software? And Europe being
such a hotbed of software creativity, Linus Torvalds lives where?
Nice try. It's a global phenomenon. It's also true that Siemens and
Groupe Bull (and others - are there others?) simply lacked the vision
and drive (and opportunities) Microsoft had. While Microsoft was
rolling out Windows for good or ill, those clever Europeans were
perfecting Videotex. Such genius.
>Sort of the illusion of freedom (US politics) vs the reality of freedom

>There is an underlying cultural thing operating here somewhere......
Absolutely true. It's how we define 'freedom'. For those in the US of
Libertarian bent, Microsoft can do what it wants to within certain
legal bounds (which it's overstepped, IMO). No one forces you or anyone
else to use it (we can also argue about 'forces' in the context of what
one must use at work - no one forces you to work for a given employer).
Finally, as for US politics, better bland/boring politics and a diverse
and vibrant society than the reverse.

I've had some very bad lockups with G400 on serveral different MB's on
starting any X-server more advanced than the 16-colour VGA server. The only
option was to login remotely and re-boot.
One of those was a kt7-raid, (the others were a fairly new dual PIII system
and an old BX440 board). [Equally another kt7-raid based box has been
working fine]. I've switched all the problem machines to Voodoo-3 3000
cards.

My hopes are not too high that Microsoft can loose market for this.
They will turn it in a kind of useful feature to protect you against
'hackers' (meaning crackers), terrorists, music and video pirates,
Nazis, pedophiles and all kinds of
Dangerous Individuals Rambling
Dangerously the Internet Freely and Frivolously
(DIRDIFF) (Hmm... I will take a trademark on it ;).
How they will do it? I don't know, but MS has a lot of people paid to
think about it.
But more to the point, I think that MS now is in a position to be
more monopolistic than ever, because the court case will float aimlessly
for years, and their NET iniative begins to make them the only
real players on the Internet. I hope it only begins. But some companies
and Internet sites no more have Netscape or Standard web compatibilities.
And MS counts on people taking it as A Good Thing: only one 'standard'!

convert from ImageMagick.

]My guess: You've been running out of inodes on the /var
]filesystem, therefor no new files can be stored on it

No. That is almost never the solution. To run out of inodes you need a
huge number of empty files or almost empty files. This is almost always
a pathology. Fix the pathology. Erase all those empty files. That is
all you need to do. (by fix I include fixing the problem which made
those empty files) Eg logrotate will make and exponential number if you
have a rule like file* in one of the logrotate files.

That article is a spoof. It contains other fake stories like "Microsoft

I had the same problem when upgrading my RH7 to KDE 2. Here's what I
figured out.
The rpm program reports dependency problems in a misleading way. You
_don't_ need those files, on the contrary you need to get rid of them!
Those are files that depend on the KDE1 packages that will be replaced
by installation of KDE2.
To find out the packages causing problems:
1. find the full path of the file causing dependecy error
locate libkdecore.so.2
2. find the package containing file
rpm -qf <path found in step 1>
3. repeat 1. and 2. for all files
4. remove offending packages with rpm -e
