Maybe this will help.
Trying to help so no flames please.

XF86Config modelines configuration guide

This is only a guide for calculating the modeline settings. Do Not use
any modeline settings used below as they could cause damage to your
monitor. These settings are used for example purposes only!!
Any damage you create by using the example modelines below is your
damage and your damage alone.
Calculate the modelines for your monitor as they will most likely be
different than mine.
Again the modeline settings below are example purposes ONLY!!!

                        ******YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED!!!!******

The first thing to do if you haven't already is to contact the
manufacturer of your monitor and ask them for the video timings for your
specific monitor. Then use the following to calculate the proper
settings for it.

The modeline identifies the content of this line as settings for a mode
such as 1024x768 or 800x600.

The pixel clock or dot clock is expressed in MHz (1x10^h Hertz) such as
94.5 or 75.75
The setting for my monitor is 75.7500MHz but if it were listed in KHz
then I would have to divide it by 1000 to convert it into MHz.
Such as 94500KHz divided by 1000 = 94.5MHz

Horizontal Modeline Settings are calculated as follows.

The horizontal resolution or display width are the settings such as the
1024 part of 1024x768 or the 800 part of the 800x600 setting.

The next setting in the modeline is the horizontal front porch setting.
It is calculated by taking the horizontal resolution setting and adding
the front porch to it.
        On my monitor this is 1024 + 16 = 1040

The next setting in the modeline is the horizontal sync. It is
calculated by taking the the front porch setting and adding the
horizontal sync to it.
        On my monitor this is 1040 + 96 = 1136

The next setting in the modeline is the horizontal back porch. It is
calculated by taking the horizontal sync setting and adding the back
porch to it.
        On my monitor this is 1136 + 176 = 1312

Vertical Modeline Settings are calculated as follows.

The Vertical resolution or vertical display is the 768 part of the
display setting 1024x768 or the 600 part of 800x600 setting.

The next setting in the modeline is the vertical front porch. It is
calculated by taking the vertical resolution setting and adding the
vertical front porch to it.
        On my monitor 768 + 1 = 769

The next setting in the mode line is the vertical sync. It is calculated
by taking the vertical front porch and adding the vertical sync to it.
        On my monitor 769 + 3 = 772

The next setting in the mode line is the vertical back porch. It is
calculated by taking the vertical sync and adding the vertical back
porch to it.
        On my monitor 772 + 28 = 800

The next setting in the mode line is the Horizontal sync. It is simply a
+ or - and is set as follows. +hsync or -hsync

The last setting in the mode line is the vertical sync. It is simply a
+ or - and is set as follows. +vsync or -vsync.

After calculating all the proper settings your mode line would look
similar the the following.

        1024x768 75.75 1024 1040 1136 1312 768 769 772 800 +hsync +vsync

Remember to calculate "your" monitor's settings as the settings used
above are for my monitor and may damage your monitor.

****** YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED!! ******

If my typing this helps just one person to get X working then my time
was well spent. I hope this helps.

Sorry No Guarantee!!
But It's FREE!! ;~)

Good Luck!

I have setup Redhat 6.1 on a Proliant 1600R. I first used the Compaq raid
manager to create my array then Redhat looks at it just like a big drive.
All works good. Also there is a kernel for redhat 6.1 on the Compaq website.

If anyone could help with this problem, I'd really appreciate it.
Whenever I want to use linuxconf in Red Hat 6.1, I get an error message
in the shell that reads "error message from readadmin: gdk-wrning ** :
locale not supported by C library" I'm a newbie and have no idea what
this means, and at this point the only solution I have is to reinstall
the OS, but I'd like to avoid that if possible...any advice is
appreciated

Thanks!

Well, I can afford it, but I don't want to. I am busy working on my attic (I need
plenty of room), an I have another three computers (386, 486) which need
attention, and I need 64 Mb of EDO DRAM to expand my main workstation/server, we
have just laid parquet and we have bought new furniture, so really, for the
moment buying a new floppy drive is a very low priority. I'd rather work somewhat
harder with 720k, than invest in a new floppy.

X is the windowing system. KDE is just one of the GUIs that sits on it.
KDE, GNOME, FVWM, WindowMaker, Enlightenment, etc are all
WindowManagers/Desktop environments that will not work without X.

If an application is written for X, it will work on all windowmanagers.
If it was written with Gnome or KDE, then it won't work very well with other
things. (It will work, assuming you have the relevant libraries installed,
just not as well...)

Yes. X. Don't program specifically fir KDE or GNOME...

http://www.gtk.org is a good start. GTK is a rather good X toolkit and
widget set.

Probably best not to use SVGATextMode. The author of the program has
ceased to maintain it because he thinks it is no long useful with

I used to use 'ripit' which controls bladeenc, cdparanoia and some other
stuff for tagging. Worked fine and dandy.

For no particular reason (well, okay, it was a debian package, so I no
longer need to update it myself :)) I switched to 'abcde', which uses
any of a variety of encoders (I use it with gogo, which is insanely
fast). It uses a couple other toys (like id3 and cdparanoia), but see
freshmeat for the abcde site, which should tell you what you need.

No fancy gui, but then, why do I need one? Put in cd, type 'abcde' and
return. Take out CD when it's done. Repeat.

For playback, I use mpg123 for the command line, gqmpeg as my usual
front end, and sometimes xmms. (I like gqmpeg's skins better, but it
needs a 'sort by path/filename' option... With 2000 mp3's though, I
really need something else...)

The TCP stack (particularly in Win9x..not sure how bad it is in W2k) is not
capable of transferring at the maximum rated speed of your network.
You also will lose performance because of encapsulation and network
overhead.

Linux to Linux transfers will be faster than Linux to Windows or (god forbid)
Windows to Windows trasnfers.

Hey man, are you trying to use this thing with the kde
interface? If so, you need to cd to /opt/kde/bin and joe
the startkde file. Once you do that you need to find a line
that says startif kaudioserver, or startifkwsound, or
something like that and delete the # comments in front of
them. Then you'll have to put an $ after both of those
entries and type in emu10k1, and the module should be
loaded next time you start kde.

You should be able to do this using linuxconf. Also try
man chkconfig.

But the best course is to remove the packages. That will remove
the programs you don't want and also any startup scripts in
/etc/rc.d/init.d.

Write a simple loop over that lynx hack. Do it in a shell script. If you
want to use lynx, that's probably the most effective way to do it.

The main problem that I am having is that there is no home directory for

I am using Corel linux which creates a passwd entry and puts the home
