What compiler are you using? If it's g77, what does it print when you
say "g77 -v"? Are you using the same compilation options? How large
are the differences? Are they exactly reproducable? What hardware do
you run?

Subject: Changing the Sizes of RAM Disks
Date: 04 Oct 2000 09:17:49 -0500
Following the example in www.tcu-inc.com/mark/articles/Ramdisk.html, I was
able to create a RAM disk. It worked fine when I wrote files to it, read their
contents, etc. Default size of the RAM disk was about 4Meg.
Following the instructions in the same article, I tried to change the default
size of RAM disks to 10Meg. I added the line "ramdisk=10000" to the end of
lilo.conf, then rebooted, and followed the same procedure as before to create
a ramdisk. However, its size was still 4Meg.
I'm running RedHat Linux 2.2.12-20 #1.
Thanks for any help.

This method will work if you have a copy of DOS hanging around.
It is also possible to do the repair from Linux. When LILO overwrote the
MBR it saved a copy of the old MBR. It is possible to put this back.
Read the LILO manual for instructions.

How can I change the hostname on the fly ?
Currently I'm changing the files:-
/etc/sysconfig/network
/proc/sys/kernel/hostname
I 've noticed LinuxConf and NetCfg both do things differently. Which is
correct ?

Redirect stderr to the same place that stdout is pointing to.
This means you'll get all messages and errors written to the file
pgserver.log.

Here's what 'free' gives with Gnome +E + Netscape running. No fancy

total used free shared buffers cached

-/+ buffers/cache: 21780 41256

Is this what I should expect? Thought more swap would be used.

Well, this is an open question. the xfree86 website had details for
my card (AT24 chipset, Alliance Promotion card), but they didn't
work, so i had to finagle a bit to get it to go. i wrote xfree86 about
this, but no reply. maybe go back to generic 600x400? i could try to
see if it improves performance, but then i can hardly use the thing
(and i may never luck into the right configuration again).

Also, if you want to send a binary use:
uuencode my.bin my.bin | mutt -s"Some info."
at the other end (recipient):
save mail to file (junk) then
uudecode junk
You will find my.bin and junk in the current directory.
Of course you don't have to use mutt, any MUA should work.
Note: If the file is too big some MTA setups will reject it. But
nowdays I think this is rare. Users customarily attach very large
files.

How much swap is being used depends on several factors. This looks
fairly normal if X has not been running to long, ie not enough time to
eat up some buffers/cache.
The error message still worries me. That is definitely not normal. I'd
be concerned that the swap may be corrupted or something. Don't think
this accounts for a slow down, but corrupted memory is not a good thing
;) But just based on this output, I'd say swap is functioning. Someone
else mentioned hparm. This is a good idea. Read the man page first, and
if no reason to be concerned, then to 'hdparm -d1 /dev/whatever'. This
can really help disk access.

I would suspect the answer is here somewhere. You might try different
color depths. Are you 24 or 32 now? If so drop to 16. Are you running
the latest X server? Not meaning 4.x, but would at least be 3.3.6.

Reading previous posts in the NG is a real good idea. I'm
sick of answering this question, why the hell don't they
write the answer on the CD in big red letters.
Find your pppd executable, probably in /usr/sbin but you
can find it with:
$ whereis pppd
you get:
pppd: /usr/sbin/pppd /usr/man/man8/pppd.8.gz
So do cd /usr/sbin then do su and input the root password,
then type:
# chmod u+s pppd
(don't type the dollar or hash sign, it's meant to be the prompt), that
should sort it out.

If you do:
$ echo ${PATH}
What do you see? Are the newly added directories listed?
As someone else mentioned is the path being exported, I
have a line in my .bash_profile that says:
export USERNAME BASH_ENV PATH
This comes after the path and bash_env have been defined.

Subject: Re: HELP! - Corel Linux install - data recovered!!!
Date: Wed, 04 Oct 2000 15:43:48 GMT
After trying many different data recovery packages (I'd given up on
getting my WIN back) I was ready to delete the linux partition through
linux fdisk and take my chances. Then I came across Powerquest's Lost &
Found and thought I had nothing to lose so I tried it. Well, right away
it scanned the bad drive, recognized two partitions on it, and
proceeded to find about 95% of the data on the drive, and let me
recover 100% of what I wanted. Thw whole process took about 3 hours, I
was VERY impressed with the program - which installs itself on 3
floppies that you run it from and then you boot from it, it analyzes
the whole disk, loads which files it can recover in to memory while
color coding the files based on chance of recovery, then lets you pick
which ones to recover to the destination drive. Definatly a superior
product to Easy Recovery and HDR-Data (which were the only two programs
to recognize the drive, but returned gibberish).
Thought I'd pass this along to anyone that may fear they lost their
data the same way I did.
Now that I have my critical data back I'm going to remove the Linux
partition using linux fdisk and see what happens, ie - will WIN98 see
the disk again... I'll update this thread with the results

Subject: Linux install problem
Date: Wed, 04 Oct 2000 08:46:50 -0700
Hi, I'm trying to install either Mandrake 7.1 or RedHat 6.2 on one of
Sony's new VAIO laptops, using a PCMCIA CDROM. Now although on
Mandrake's web page they say it supports a ATAPI PC card type CDROM,
I can find no driver that even looks close for it on the startup
screen. Is it possible to use one of the drivers /w some specific
options? I know an easy solution would be to install from the hard
drive, but previous problems have made this not an option. (No
installed driver for the CDROM, no installed driver for the floppy, no
installed driver for ethernet card = screwed.) Any suggestions?

The RAM disk size is dynamic and it grows as more space is required.
This was changed in kernel v1.3.48, a long time ago in the Linux
world :-)

only on a per directory basis without regard to userid?
