Sorry for flooding the newsgroup, one last question.

I want to connect to my Linux machine with a MS-DOS machine running a
terminal emulator on COM1. How do I run a process on the Linux machine to
monitor the port, and start the terminal session?

Hi!
I got the Ditto Max drive to talk, but it still will not work. Below is
what I get in my dmesg file, but first my configuration -

- conf.modules -
 alias char-major-27 zftape
 options ftape ft_fdc_base=0x200 ft_fdc_irq=0x03 ft_fdc_dma=0

isapnp is configured as base 0x200, irq 3, dma 0

when I try to use my tape drive, it reports it cannot find it's position.
Also it seems that ftape does not see it as a ditto max drive.

i think he means a web server. i think maybe thats what 'web folders'
does in win98 although i've never tried it myself.
Larry, have a look and see if you've got a /home/httpd/html directory
and put the stuff in there that you want to make available on the net.
Do you have apache? if not try http://apache.org - its what I use for
making things available for download.

For the past few months, I've been struggling, unsuccessfully, to install
Linux on my computer which currently runs Windows 98. My problem is with
the partitioning process which is prevented from happening by virus
software on my PC. I have uninstalled Norton AntiVirus from my computer
and turned off the BIOS' virus checker but I am still prevented from
applying the partitioning process when the PC reboots to start the process
outside the Windows 98 environment. I appreciate you don't know what
software there is on my PC but do you know of any way that I can find out
what is causing this problem when the computer reboots and how I can stop
it?
Thanks a lot

Hi there,

I have this card - came installed on my Dell Dimension xps R450 - and the
standard sound drivers do not support it. There is limited support for this
sound card if you get the proprietory OSS drivers (http://www.opensound.com).

You've quoted the man page for the random() function from the libc
library, not a man page for the "random" program. AFAIK, "random" is
specific to your installation; it certainly doesn't appear on my
Slackware installations or in their man pages.

Is the Turtle Beach Montego an Aureal Vortex type of card? I have the Storm
Platinum Aureal Vortex and just tonight i got sound working in Linux Redhat
6.2 beta. The driver I got was from www.freshmeat.com. The file has the
driver for the Turtle Beach Montego (8820 based) sound card in it, among
others.

I think this may be what you are looking for. Go to 'freshmeat' and type
'Aureal' in the search box.

Good luck.

Linux will work fine, including having enough room for an office
suite like Star Office or K-Office. You can get Linux installed on it
by several routes: The slackware distribution has disk images for
floppies, you can download/transfer those images to floppies on another
machine. If you can borrow a couple of NICs, you can install via NFS
from another Linux/Unix machine with the required cdrom drive and with
NFS enabled. You can also install over the parallel or serial links,
but I don't know of any distribution that sets this up for you
"automatically". You can temporarily move a CDROM into the machine for
the install. If you go this route, you need to have the CDROM set as
"slave" via the dip-switches on the drive and the HD set as "master" if
you use the same IDE port.

If the machine has small memory (say, 8 MB), you may find running
Xwindows slow. In this case, look for a small, fast GUI rather than a
pretty, elegant GUI. RAM and HD space are more of a limitation than the
486 speed.

As root do:

# chmod u+s /sbin/shutdown

As the user logout and log back in again then try shutdown -h now

Have a look at Config-HOWTO on my distro it's in the directory
/usr/doc/HOWTO it answers many of the types of questions that
you are answering.

I can get it to sort of work by using -n ${PWD} as in the example below,

$ xterm -bg 'black' -fg 'green' -n ${PWD}

The only problem with this is it doesn't change when you change directory, it
only gives the directory from which you open the xterm.

I've added Red Hat Linux 6.1 to my IBM Intellistation, which had

I haven't been able to find what I need in the FAQs. Can anyone out

Hi

the find|xargs does work if you dont have any spaces in the filenames

you could use

find -type "*html" -type f -print0|xargs -0 grep string

I have gotten this error also. I tend to like the DOS rawrite.exe.
Copy the image file and the exe to a directory, open a command box,
change to the directory, and run rawrite-it should prompt you for the
rest.
Hope this works. Bodge

While I'm all in favor of RTFM as a solution strategy, I wouldn't actually
know where to find this in "The Docs<tm>". And I've been using Linux for 4
years now! Where could one find the documentation for runlevels and their
meanings, and other init-related stuff?

I ask not so much for me, because I've picked most of this stuff up
(through osmosis, it would seem), but because I'd like to be able to point
people at a specific resource for questions like this.

Morning, all.

I just got a RH 6.2 release notice and thought I'd check it out. Since I
have DSL and a CD-burner, I was planning on sucking down the
ISO images and burning them myself. One question, though -- the
appropriate directory (at least on the sourceforge mirror) contains the
following files:

ncftp .../redhat/redhat-6.2/iso > dir
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 369 Mar 26 05:16 ls-lR
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 173 Mar 26 05:16 ls-lR.gz
-rw-r--r-- 1 nobody nobody 608845824 Mar 10 00:20 zoot-doc.iso
-rw-r--r-- 1 nobody nobody 671881216 Mar 9 18:39 zoot-i386.iso
-rw-r--r-- 1 nobody nobody 627785728 Mar 9 18:42 zoot-sparc.iso
-rw-r--r-- 1 nobody nobody 594044928 Mar 9 18:41 zoot-srpms.iso

Most of these are obvious, but what's zoot-doc.iso? Even with DSL, a 600M
download still takes a while, and I'd rather not bother unless I really
need it.

Anybody try this one out?

Richard
