You get the right to sell your software under the label "Unix" by paying a
fee and getting it to pass some tests. As far as I know The Open Group
owns the trademark at the moment.

Well, as for me "man smail-config" displayed this option - if it's called
differently then make a "man -k smail" and you'll find the manpage.

Anyway: it has to be entered into: /etc/smail/config which is the global
configuration file - so you don't need to use most commandline options.
If it helps my version is 3.2.0.xxx so if you have a newer one then you
must have the "smtp_remote_allow"-option (without it I wouldn't use a
24/7 connection for there are too many spammers outside).

Does the user help@domain exist at all?

e.g. a nonexistent local user causes the following:

helo hostname.domain
250 localhost Hello hostname.domain (user@localhost from
address [IP]).
mail from: postmaster
250 postmaster ... Sender Okay
rcpt to: unknownuser
550 'unknownuser' <test@(nodomain)> not matched: (ERR_100) unknown user.

... and refuses "data".

If your Majordomo had a subdomain or another domain this *must* be entered in

hostname=localhost:domainname

... so it knows that this is *not* a remote IP/domain (and might refuse it as
Spam because of relaying).
Sorry for my assumtions - what is the contents of "/etc/smail/config"?

Reply-To: [EMAIL PROTECTED]

I am trying to set up Linux RedHat6.0 on an old AMD 386 PC with 8 Mb
RAM and 300 Gb HD. Netcard type is SMC UltraChip.

Yes, it is an old PC, but from what I have heard, Linux runs well on
an old PC compared to Windows.

I would like to try this out - found an RedHat60 disc and try to do a
FTP bootnet install.

(The old PC does not have an CDROM drive, so I mounted the disk on a
WEB server).

The bootnet.img disk booted perfektly, at the netcard was accepted.
Filled out the following info and clicked "OK", and it started to
transfer files from the webserver, but froze up at the screen saying:

"Loading second stage ramdisk"

What seems to be the problem? Inkompatible hardware?

Yes.

You could use mkisofs and cdrecord.

Or xcdroast.

You should use cdrecord --scanbus to determine the correct SCSI ID
number.

If you have a lot of data, you should consider seriously to buy even a
small second hand DAT tape drive. I got mine for $100. It is by far
the cheapest media, 1GB costing about $3.50

It shows the number of users which are annoted in the /var/log/utmp
file. Not every program writes a record to this file. See the man page
for utmp.

Generally, login and sshd do. telnet should too. cron and at do
not. Daemons do never.

It maybe you had a virtual console left open.

No. mandrake used to be a Redhat repackager-- doing some fixes and

is no longer true. They are now a distro in their own right. The

You can share the swap partition (as mentioned) and the home
partition, what you probably want to. Sharing the kernel might be
possible but could turn out as a bad idea as distributors frequently
make extensions.

Your should not share binaries, libryries and other stuff unless you
are really sure that they use the same C library and the same
configuration.

It starts innocently enough. It's supposed to be easier, right?
Well, I don't find it that way. I am dealing with the fact that
dependencies are not being satisfied.

How hard should it be to grab the QT source and build it? When the
compiler complains that X11/Xlib.h is missing, among other include
files, my first thought was, "didn't I install that stuff?" The
package in YaST was clearly labeled as xdevelopment. I guess they
lied.

It would be a monumental undertaking to go and put together my own
distribution. I also don't feel like replacing what I have with
another package deal. My solution to this mess is to stop with the
distro mentality altogether. It's too Microsofty. I've got GCC
2.95.2. I've used it to build kernel 2.2.14. Although there were
warnings, it seems to run. Fine. I'll make 2.95.2 my only compiler
until a newer version makes it worth the upgrade effort. And I will
build that from source like I did with 2.95.2.

As for the binutils, is there a single place to get them all? I'm
figuring I can go to freshmeat and find 'em there. Build those from
source too. Also, where do the standard libraries come into play?
GCC seemed to include some. Is that where they come from, or are
there others?

I really should know this stuff.

The bottom line is I don't want any distribution specific stuff. I
want to go with some standard that lets me build from the author's
source without too much dancing around. I also want to be able to
provide source that anyone can build without dancing around.

When it comes to dependencies, I want them spelled out in a README
file. Tell me what else I need, and I will go get it. It's not like
I want to spend all my time installing software anyway. If it needs
to be automated, why not use sh scripts?

Maybe Debian does have the answer. Maybe FreeBSD does with Ports. I
don't know. It seems unlikely a canned process will fit everyone's
needs.

Hi,

I have Redhat Linux 6.1 running on a Compaq Presario 5240 which has
an HP Laserject 5L attached to the parallel port. This setup is pretty
standard, I assume. The only problem I am having is that I cannot print.
I can submit jobs to the queue, but the queue gives the following error:

zender@dakine:~$ lpq
waiting for lp to become ready (offline ?)
Rank Owner Job Files Total Size

The printer appears to be online, and it does print as desired when
I boot into Windows instead of Linux, so it's not a hardware problem.

Here is the printcap:

We are using sendmail as SMTP server and "popper" as POP server.

Be warned that sendmail configuration can be a nightmare for
unexperienced. This is basically due to the fact that EMail is a very,
very intrincate thing.

There are some alternatives, like qmail. For example GMX uses qmail,
if I don't recall wrong. I believe there are other alternatives which
accentuate safety.

However, sendmail is very flexible and is the de facto standard for
internet mail transport. There is an Book a O'Reilly which explains
the configuration.

BTW, SuSE sells a preconfigured (but free) IMAP server package which
could be a bargain. It seems me a really good idea to sell
preconfigured servers and support.

not so easy. /etc has to hold mtab, and this is modified when mounting
something (Altough there exists /proc/mounts also, it's
redundant). That means that the root filesystem has to be
writable. /var is also expected to be writable. Normally this is done
with a RAM-Disk which is initialized at kernel startup.

There exists an Linux Router project. Other packages are trinux and
tomsrbt. It seems unnecessary that you do the work again.

I think that's right.

You could also use the "lftp" program which is very comfortable for
this kind of things. You start it with "nohup lftp $URL", then
initiate ineteractively the download, and then set it to the
background and hang up.

It might be also practical to use the "batch" command which runs a
commmand when system load is low, and mails the output to you.
