I have Win 98 and RH5.2 sharing a 10 Gb drive, and boot
without difficulty to either via LILO in the MBR.

When I try to defragment the Win 98 (FAT32) partition, Win98
says there's something wrong and to run scandisk

scandisk says there's something amiss with my boot sector
and offers to fix it. I suspect it's the presence of LILO which
disturbs it and have thusfar declined the offer.

Has anyone else with a similar setup encountered the same
situation?

Charles Sullivan

On the Windows 98 machine I have always used 'java CountServer' and 'java
CountClient',
and it works ok then. Besides, I would think it is in Inprise own interest
that Visibroker can run on as
many platformwas as possible.

Steve, the above referenced URL returns "file not found" for both the

In /etc/sysconfig/network make sure you have a valid gateway.
If not, try changing these lines as follows:
GATEWAY=
GATEWAYDEV=

This worked for me, your mileage may vary.

The first problem is specific to Microsoft's FAT16 format. The second problem
you still have to worry about because it is a problem with all BIOSes.

Don't know about the Promise Fas Trak stuff, but I am using Netgear
FA310TX cards in my linux boxes.

You will need to copy the tulip.c file from the disk that comes with
the netgear card into /usr/src/linux/drivers/net and rebuild your
kernel. When you "make config" (after copying the file), make sure
you select the tulip driver. Good instructions are on the floppy disk
in the doc/linux directory. Good luck.

I come not to praise fvwm2, but to tell you how to live with
it if that's what you want to do. At least I can tell you
one method of customizing AnotherLevel (the fvwm2 hack
that's the default interface for RedHat 5.x). I found that
the documentation for doing this was awful, and there are
many techniques that are supposed to work, that I wasn't
able to get to fly.

I don't use a .fvwm2rc file: my technique is to make local
copies of all of the files in /usr/X11/AnotherLevel, and
start from there.

http://www.grin.net/~mirthless/web/doomhowto-customizeRedHat5x_021299.html

This web page tells you how to stop that offensive scrolling
behavior to other virtual desktops, and also how to get rid
of the thumbail in the lower right hand corner that you can
use to Page around. (Actually, the way I get rid of that is
kind of cheesy, but it works.)

I agree that AnotherLevel is a bit of a pain to customize,
but I haven't felt like playing with other window managers
yet. WindowMaker seems to be fairly popular (and it's
available on the RedHat 5.2 disks, though not installed by
default). I may just tough it out and wait for gnome (I
have other things to do than spend my life playing with
different window managers).

Hello,

im having the following problem during the 'make' of the 2.2.1 Kernel.

The 'make modules' goes fine and dandy.

However, when i go for the make modules_install it gives me the
following message :

ls:*o: No file or folder by that name

Also, when compiling XFree86-3.3.3.1 :

I start with the make World as stated in the INSTALL.TXT file and i
soon get the following error :

         -DCURDIR=./config/makedepend
./config/make/imake : no file or folder by that name
./config/make/imake : cannot exec /lib/ccp
Stop
./config/make/imake : Exit Code 1

Well, it sounds like you've got some methods of your own
worked out, but just for the hell of it I figured out a
stupid hack that will get rid of the Pager from the lower
right hand corner of AnotherStep.

The trick I came up with is to go to the file
   fvwm2rc.init.m4
Find the "EndSetupFunction", and add a line like this:

   + "I" KillModule FvwmButtons

In other words, instead of figuring out what was starting
the thing up, I'm killing it automatically.

I've been writing up a web page with my adventures in
customizing AnotherStep, if anyone's interested in more
details:

http://www.grin.net/~mirthless/web/doomhowto-customizeRedHat5x_021299.html

I think it's interesting that you guys are talking about
using some approaches that I wasn't able to get to work.
For instance, I don't use a ".fvwm2rc" file (instead I've
got local copies of everything from /usr/X11/AnotherLevel).

And if I tried to start things up with an fvwm2 at the end
of my .xinitrc, I'm pretty sure I would get the window
manager running without the 95-like taskbar at the bottom of
the screen. Instead I use do a "RunWM".

(I can understand why you might not want the taskbar, but
if you want to get away from it maybe you really should just
be using another window manager...)

I *once* did the same thing. On my multi-boot system (with 3,
count 'em, three versions of Linux), I was planning to run e2defrag
on my primary root partition, the one with /etc and all the important
stuff. Out of habit, I typed mke2fs /dev/hda5. For a split second,
I wondered why I didn't see the expected curses screen clear. Well,
there were curses to be had (but not from Mr. Dickey) when I realized
what I had done.

....however, because of an ``rm -rf / rite of passage'' incident back
in the ``early days'', a relatively fresh backup saved my bacon. The
awesome power of Unix and the complete trust that it places in the
user is a *good* thing. Sure, there will be the inevitable mistakes
and the attendent lossage of data -- but one must learn to develop a
mutual respect for a system that places so much respect in *you*.

You forgot to install glibc-devel. See config.log.

Thanks for the reaction, but of course i already tried that. As a matter
of fact i am
posting this at the moment with 4.5, which regretfully has the same
symptom.
It freezes on particulair (and i dont know which) java code.

Its a complete statically linked executable, so it has nothing to do with
my own
libraries or whatever. I have no clue whatsoever.

SuSE 6.0 is the best distro on the market :) I also had no problems
getting 2.2.1 compiled and running on this distro. There is a lot of
updated software on the 5CD set and a few features have been added that
make my online life more affordable :)

Clutching @ straws here. Which of the following
did you use:

        - make config
        - make xconfig
        - make menuconfig

Of these three, xconfig has been prone to problems.

Since you included a redhat newsgroup, I am assuming
you use a redhat distribution. Do a locate on cpp.
If it is found in say /usr/local/lib then do

        ln -s /usr/local/lib/cpp /lib/cpp

and try make World again.

Yes really. I ran 'ldd netscape' which confirmed me on that one.

Yes, i also read something about that. For the moment i am not planning on
re-compiling Netscape also because i read on mozilla.org, that the only
code available is unstable after all. U can only download the version they
are actually developing on, with all the risks involved. It might even not
compile! So i won't give it a shot, or i must get really pissed by this freeze! :-)
