I tried to configure my high speed internet connection on my COL 2.4 box ...
This is what I've done ...
1. Upgrade pppd to 2.3.10 with the RPM found on your ftp site ... in
contrib/libc6
2. Installed pppoe fom the site http://www.roaringpenguin.com from the
source
code (tarball file).
3. configure the infos to connect to my ISP.
4. tried to start my connection.
5. Results: I always have the same results ... timeout error
My NIC seems to be ok ... I got an uplink on my modem and when doing a
'ifconfig eth0' it looks fine. It looks like my box is communicating with
the
modem cause I see my modem lights flashing ...
Did somebody ever configure a linux box for high speed internet connection
???
By the way, my ISP is Sympatico (Montreal), I got a 3C509 NIC and the modem
is
a 1 Meg HSA modem (from Nortel) ... and the PC I'm testing is a PII-400 with
128 Meg of memory and two 10 Gig HD.
Thx for the help

Subject: Problem installing Slackware Linux over NFS.
Date: Wed, 05 Apr 2000 16:17:27 -0500
Hey guys,
I'm having a bit of a problem with installing Slackware Linux 4.0 over
our network using NFS. The server has all the requisite servers running
(portmap, mountd, and nfsd). In the /etc/exports file is the line:
/cdrom 192.168.1.100(ro,insecure,all_squash)
In hosts.deny is the line "ALL: ALL", and in hosts.allow is the line
"portmap: 192.168.1.0/255.255.255.0". There is a Slackware 4.0 CD-ROM
mounted on the server on /cdrom. On the machine having Linux installed
on it, the machine is booted using the net.i/color.gz boot/root disks.
When it asks for the machine's IP address, I put 192.168.1.100. The
netmask is 255.255.255.0. I do not select a gateway, ebacsue our LAN
does not have one. For the NFS server, I put our NFS server's IP
address. As for the directory on which the disk sets are located, I put
/cdrom/slakware. Then, when it actually tries to connect to the NFS
server and mount the NFS share, it pauses, and finally says:
mount: RPC: Timed out
Now, at this point, I can go to the NFS server (which is running
Slackware 7.0), and ping the other machine, and get a ping reply back.
So, the two machines can talk to each other... it's just that for some
reason a NFS connection is not being made. Any suggestions that you
guys could make would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks in advance...

Are you thinking of GOSIP? It was good in concept but the
implementation was unworkable.
>How can it now be reasonable for a government office (or anyone

It's not reasonable, of course, unless you're a legislator (typically
Republican) whose campaign was largely funded by the companies
making that software.
It wasn't until Regan/Bush appointed a critical mass of laissez-faire
/ anti-consumer / excessively pro-business judges that companies
like Microsoft began thinking they could get away with breaking
anti-trust law. Ironic when you consider that were it not for
these laws, and the DOJ, Microsoft would not even exist and IBM
(with Sperry-Rand) would control 90% of the world's computing
resources.

Say we have two directories /home/john/ftp/current and /home/john/ftp/backup
The file would look something like this.
#!/bin/bash
cp /home/john/ftp/current/* /home/john/ftp/backup/
# end of bash script:
cp copies everything in current into backup, but have a look at the man page
for cp (copy), and mv (move), they'll give you details of how to use more
intricate features of the cp and mv comand. Also see man bash for more
advanced features that can be used in bash scripts.

Do man rpm and it'll tell you what that means and some of
the ways you can go about fixing it. I could tell you what

In the directory /home/yourusername/.gnome there is a file called Terminal.
Copy the file to another name before you start messing with it.
It will have the following two lines, which uses the same notation as
html when it comes to defining the colours, ie R/G/B standinf for
Red, Green and Blue. It's in hex so 0123456789abcdef are all acceptable
characters. which go in groups of four, ffff/ffff/ffff is white and
0000/0000/0000 is black, ffff/0000/0000 is red and so on, as you can
seee the posibilities are endless.
foreground=rgb:c0ff/eec0/ffee ## you can even have c0ffee colour.
background=rgb:2e8b/1eef/0c72

Methinks fork() is POSIX. POSIX.1 (IEEE Std. 1003.1-1990), XPG4 and SVID3,
to be more precise.

I'm still stumped with this problem. BTW, I forgot to mention that /dev got
blitzed and I had to recreate it with MAKEDEV.
If anyone can give me even a hint, it would be greatly appreciated. I hate
to reformat the drive and reinstall everything over one stupid glitch. Or
give up on Gnome.

What i have done is used mkinitrd to make my
compressed image file, populated the image
filesystem and used lilo instead of dd'ing the
kernel straight to disk. The disadvantages of
this is that its a ext2 fs (dont accidently
format it in windows) you need at least /dev/fd0
and /dev/ram in the root of the floppy and your
nessecary /boot/boot.p /boot/map files. Im sure
the same thing can be accompilished with loadlin
on a msdos fs floppy and at least that way you
are less likely to format it in windows.
