Bob: thanks for your answer. Yes, I meant postscript printer. I'm using RH
but changed my printcap by hand because I don't think printtool would
understand all the remote printers in there and because I like to know
what I'm doing. Now, it prints postscript just fine and I just discovered
how to print plain text using enscript -M Letter and I guess I could use
enscript -M Letter -Z as a filter where the Z switch let's postscript pass
through. Just wondered how other people were dealing with this.

I presume your "postscript filter" should be "postscript printer"!
You don't tell us which distribution you're using. On RedHat, you
would use printtool to configure a postscript printer. This creates
a configuration entry in /etc/printcap and a corresponding sub-directory
under /var/spool/lpd. Check out the printing HOWTOs.

Staroffice is free; a free version of WordPerfect can be downloaded,
but it lacks some functionality (notably the possibility of installing
new fonts). Staroffice is a complete office suite, WordPerfect is a -
very capable - wordprocessor. WordPerfect is more resource-friendly
than Staroffice. Staroffice's user interface may need some getting
used to (everything happens in one main window), while WordPerfect is
- WordPerfect (you can even get the user interface from 5.1 for DOS if
you're so inclined).
My advice: if you have the time, try both and ditch the one you don't
like.

Date: Thu, 27 Apr 2000 16:05:58 -0400
I'm running Redhat 6.1 with the latest version of gnomeICQ.
The catch is I recently had to re-install 6.1 from scratch.
Before the reinstall, I was running rh6.1 upgraded from 6.0 and gnomeICQ
ran perfectly.
Now I have problems connecting. I have the gnomeICQ icon on my gnome
panel however after I dial up and swich my status to ONLINE, it won't
take. I have to remove it from my panel and launch it from scratch
AFTER I've dialed up. After this, the program works fine, I can message
perfectly.
What has caused this slight hiccup? Anyone else have this problem?
Its not a crippling problem, but maybe a symptom of a bigger problem.
Thanks

I had that trouble, too. Redhat's site, under errata, explains what is
going on, there is a
context switch bug in the shipped kernel. I went up to 2.2.14.6.0.1 and it
all went away. :)

LILO version 21 by Werner Almesberger has been updated to support
booting from large capacity disks using a new 'lba32' option (-L new
command line switch). Dubbed version 21.4, the source code is
available for download from
ftp://sd.dynhost.com/pub/linux/lilo (developer's site)
ftp://brun.dyndns.org/pub/linux/lilo (an alias)
Or from the main distribution site:
ftp://metalab.unc.edu/pub/Linux/system/boot/lilo
When you install lilo, you have to put several files in place.
I assume you did that with a make install or something similar.
Did you use the -L option? Perhaps there is something else that
has to be done first in the BIOS.
Finally, are you sure your BIOS supports
the extended BIOS call necessary for this to work?

You need to create a script that changes to the Netscape directory
first eg.
#! /bin/bash
cd /Netscape6/package/
/Netscape6/package/netscape
You could name the script netscape6 or something and put it in /usr/bin
and
then typing netscape6 should work.

Add the 'lba32' global option to lilo.conf to turn on the large disk
support. (This is mentioned in the README* and man pages.)

I've downloaded the tar file and looked at the README and the
documentaion. Unfortunately the documentation does not appear
to have been modified to explain the new capability. But
the README does discuss it in a cursory manner. I'm not
sure I got it right, but I think you need to add either the
linear option or probably the lba32 option. Also, your
lilo.conf file doesn't make a whole lot of sense as given.
It should look instead something like the following.
boot = /dev/hda # See below
map=/boot/map
install=/boot/boot.b
compact #See below
lba32
timeout=100
image = /vmlinuz
label = linux
root = /dev/hda3
read-only
other = /dev/hda1
label = dos
table = /dev/hda
Notes.
1. You had boot = /dev/hda3. This is where the lilo boot loader
goes. This would be acceptable if you make that the active
partition on the disk (with fdisk).
I don't see why there should be a problem
if it lies above cylinder 1023 even for the old lilo (but someone
correct me if I'm wrong!) But it is usually more straightforward
to have the lilo boot loader in the MBR, i.e., /dev/hda. (Then
I don't think it matters which the active partition is but usually
it would be /dev/hda1.)
2. You had the root partition in the wrong part of the file.
It should be in the section devoted to booting linux, so I moved
it there.
3. I think installer and map arguments are those I gave by default,
but I put them in anyway.
4. I have never used the compact option, so I don't know if
it interacts with any other options. Do you really need it?
5. I used the option lba32, but linear might also work. I don't
know if any fiddling with the BIOS is required.
Let us know if this works.

Not necessarily. If user A does a 'chmod o+rw' on his/her directory

I know Suse 6.3 has LVM support, but I suppose that you can use the RPMs
for that in another RH based distro directly, and also, AFAIK, there's some
support built into the latest kernels.

The whole system halted. Have to use <alt><ctrl><del> to kill

Restarted from startx, started netscape again from counsel.
Same thing happened.
Have to use <alt><ctrl><del> to kill it AGAIN. su to reboot,
the same thing happened again.
<alt><ctrl><del> to kill it AGAIN. login as root, shutdown -p.
Turned power off from machine. Power on again. login as regular
user. Startx. start netscape again.... netscape hangs again...
but after about a minute or two, everything returned to normal.
The hangs were caused by opening the bookmark on netscape.
Kernel is 1.2.13, Asus SMP Mobo, dual p-3, 512 Mb PC-100 RAM,

Never had this problem before.

Weird, indeed. I recommend upgrading NS to 4.72, or downgrade it to 4.01
- both are more stable than the 4.61 version.
Were you able to track down which bookmark it was, or were all affected?
Did you try to disable java and javascript?
