This is because most Linuxes to date have reversed the traditional
mapping of Delete and Backspace: instead of Ctrl-H, Backspace is usually
configured to send ASCII 127, which SCO systems interpret the same way
as Linux interprets Ctrl-C.

Red Hat Linux 6.2 seems to put this behavior back the way it should be;
Ritchie be praised.

Anyway, you can fix this on either end (whichever causes the least pain)
with the stty command. It's probably simplest to do it on the SCO end,
actually.

I have my Toshiba Satellite Pro 430CDT with an active matrix LCD for
sale. The CPU is a Pentium running at 120mhz, it has the CD-ROM
attachment and the Floppy Disk attachment. The condition is fair because
of a small crack near one of the hinges (I think this a common problem)
and there are a couple of stickers on the case (a CRYSTAL METHOD and a
SWITCH BLADE SYMPHONY). I still have the original manuals as I'm the
original owner. Also included is a PC-Card FaxModem rated at 56k Flex.
I will not erase the HD which has MS OFFICE 97 PRO, running MS Windows
98, MS MONEY 99 and more! You will be responsible to delete those Apps.
I will include a very nice laptop bag which the Satellite Pro fits very
well in and an external mouse (when you don't want to use the trackpoint)
NEW PRICE $480 (need the cash for taxes). Also as a recent addition I
will include my Zip Drive as well because I realized that I won't need it
after the sale. Also after going to Toshiba's web site to update the
drivers I notice a settlement from the FDC that entitles Toshiba laptops
owners towards $100 free on Toshiba products this is the web site for

Subject: Voodoo3 DRI/DRM kernel module problems
Date: Fri, 28 Apr 2000 10:40:38 GMT

Noone on linux.x has anything to offer on this, so I thought I'd try
here since it seems to be a kernel problem.

I'm trying to get direct rendering running in my Linux kernel. My
Xfree86v4 setup is fine (including GL, GLUT, etc), the problem is with
the drm/dri kernel module.

I have compiled and installed 2.3.51 with the tdfx drm module. 'insmod
tdfx' however does not cause /proc/dri to appear. lsmod shows tdfx
installed, but the right hand column lists '(unused)'. The syslog shows
a line stating that the TDFX module was installed with version nmumber
and date, ending with 'minor 63'.

I'm not sure whether Device_3dfx is required - I've seen posts both
ways, but installing it first (insmod 3dfx) made /dev/3dfx appear, but
did not make any difference to the dri behaviour.

There is one oddity about my 2.3.51 config - after booting I get a load
of 'shm filesystem not mounted' errors in the syslog, but otherwise the
machine runs fine.

 Details as follows:

 K6-2/333, 64Mb SDRAM, PC-Chips 577 mb.

 Voodoo3 1000 AGP 8Mb.
 (Yes a 1000 - seems to be a 2000 with only 8Mb, but may have one
rendering pathway disabled, in which case it should be identical to a
Velocity 100, which is also supported. It works fine in Xfree86 3.3.5
and 4.0, and works with normal Voodoo3 drivers under Windows. I had it
working with Glide under 3.3.5).

 Redhat 6.1
 + Xfree86v4 from ftp.xfree86.org
 + Device3dfx and Glide3x from 3dfx
 + GLU and GLUT from dri.sourceforge.net
 + Kernel 2.3.51 compiled for K6-2 with modules support. Almost
 everything turned off except vfat (built in) and sound, network and drm
(modules).

 Can anyone tell me how to get more debug info from insmod? The source
implied 'insmod tdfx drm=debug' but that gave an error.
 Thanks for any help, I can collect any other info you can point me to.

Someone has. explore2fs allows you to access Linux partitions from
within Windows.

Well, there you go! I guess that just goes to show you how long I've
been away from Windows... On the rare occasions when I'm forced to use a
DOS prompt, I always get these damn errors about C:\> ls ==> "Bad
command or file name"  =)

This happens when I start atd (both from init.d and from the command prompt
as root) The disk is not full, permission are ok, /var/log/messages ok.
Reinstalling atd.rpm does not help.

Hey, wait a minute, it only fails when I boot off from my reiserfs root (/)
partition. When I boot the ext2 root partition, all is ok. (The reiserfs /
was created by booting with init=/bin/bash and then tarring the whole of / to
the reiserfs filesystem)

Anyone any suggestions?

All?

Are you behind a firewall? If so, passive FTP (as used by web browsers)
would fail to make a data connection, and it would appear in the logs as
connecting for a few seconds. This could be someone who is accidentally
accessing your machine, if its IP address formerly hosted an ftp server.

Or it could indeed be something less friendly. You would be well-advised
to follow Brian and Simon's advice in any case.

That's plenty good enough to plug services that use tcpd. You can also
use a port scan from outside to see what's still open.

Security issues are essentially similar for any Unix-family O/S.

This is strange, since major and minor number are correct for sda4
(see manpage for sd)
how does the partition table of sda look?

Anyone ever use cracklib and use the word "penis" as the password? Check out
the error message and get a grin. :)

#include <stdio.h>
#include <stdlib.h>
#include <crack.h>

int main(int argc, char argv[])
{
    printf("%s", "The Password is penis...\n"
    printf("%s", FascistCheck("penis", "/usr/lib/cracklib_dict"));

    return EXIT_SUCCESS;
}

I run IMP which is available for free at www.horde.org. It's not
terribly easy to setup but it works very well. It uses IMAP to connect
to the mail server and it configurable to support (on not support)
remote mail servers.

Like I said it's not easy, but it's free and it works very well. You
have to compile IMAP (if you haven't already), I would recommend only
allowing connections from localhost (127.0.0.1) becuae it's very
dangerous otherwise. You will need to recompile Apache and PHP3 with
IMAP support (difficult), and then install and configure horde and IMP.

Good Luck, hope it works,
Daniel

Subject: Does xconfig come with kernel RPM?
Date: Fri, 28 Apr 2000 12:26:20 GMT

I have Mandrake 6.0 (Venus) installed, and since it was a cover CD
included in a magazine, there are some things that DON'T
necessarily wind up in the hard drive, taking up precious space.
I am about to upgrade to a more secure kernel, as recommended in
their website, and I want to make sure I have everything ready.

But where is xconfig? Or for that matter, menuconfig? Do they come
with any of these RPMS:
  kernel-2.2.1x
  kernel-docs-*
  kernel-headers-*
  kernel-source-*

Any help is appreciated, grassy ass as they say here in Miami

Centuries ago, Nostradamus foresaw a time when Doug Robbins would say:

I pretend to administer a couple Novell boxes at the office, but cannot
pretend to know how to administer anything about an IPX network. It is
rather likely that the Novell LAN was using IPX rather than TCP/IP.

I would commend <http://www.google.com/> or <http://dmoz.org/> to you;
can't suggest much further than that...

Subject: Is it just me, or is NFS between 2.0.36 and 2.2.14 a lost cause?
Date: Fri, 28 Apr 2000 12:53:23 GMT

I'm using the latest clients and servers from Redhat for each system.
Works fine for a few days, but then eventually both systems
effectively lockup on nfs transfers.

Any clues?
