It works :) Thanks. There isn't a pre-existing utility
which will give me this, is there? I mean, I don't want
to distribute the compiled binary on to *all* my current
(and - more dreadful - future) Linux machines, if I have
an alternative.

Thanks!

: SCO UnixWare 7.1.1 is usually on the first partition (this will be important

: Solaris X86 on partition 3. All these will boot just fine by fdisking (in the

: Red Hat 6.1 (2.2.12-20 kernel) never seemed to have a problem, we just made a

: changing the boot partition in lilo.conf (on the boot floppy) from hda 5 to hda
: 11, and the same thing still happens.

: Help! I've gotta get these partitions bootable again...

Yes, partition numbers depend on whether the kernel knows about
BSD, solaris, unixware. Since 2.3.40 things are a bit better:
first the DOS-type partitions are found, and then the BSD, solaris,
unixware subpartitions. Thus, the numbering of the DOS-type partitions
is now stable.

It is not entirely clear to me what your boot procedure is:
does LILO on the floppy boot LILO on the Linux partition which again
boots a Linux kernel? Anyway, you have to make sure that boot and
root partition are set correctly.

I'd like to use 'taper' as a backup program,
but met some problem using it.

1. How can I do 'multi-volume' backup to disk drive when
I use HDD as a backup device rather than tape?
Multi-volume issue is important because there's maximum
file size in linux (2GB). Taper looks it doesn't know how to
make the next volume file if the first archive file size become
the maximum.

2. How can I run 'taper' in command line?
I know there're other executables called 'bg_backup' and 'bg_restore'
which is to be used as background backing-up and restoring.
But I can't find any usage of them.

Thanks!

LSL has been a longstanding Linux supporting company; it is unfortunate
that there have not been prepackaged applications for Linux for building
eCommerce systems.

If you are unhappy with LSL, you may want to contact LinuxCentral,
who are based in the same area (Michigan), and were founded by some
folk formerly from LSL.

First do a 'ps aux | grep crond' and see if it is running. If it is, you
have to realize that it is run with minimal environment. So you might
either need to set your PATH or use full paths to programs, scripts or
programs in scripts, not to mention files accessed.

Yes, I thought that was a little unusual for Linux Journal...
In keeping with the general Monty Python theme..the cover is from the 70's TV
series opening where a similarly attired Michael Palin said " It's...." and
then the Monty Python theme started.

Yep. conf.modules attempts to load things as modules, and if NE2000
support is in kernel, it won't recognize that but will attempt to load the
modules anyway. This can be fixed with the line "alias eth0 off" which
will prevent the kernel module loader from trying to get at the ne.o
module--it'll just use the in-kernel support. At least, that's how it
worked when I had serial support compiled into the kernel instead of as a
module. Nothing bad happened, just silly error messages on boot... I
think attempting to insmod the ne.o module when it's already loaded could
cause odd things to happen, though.

The DOJ's Proposed Final Judgment can be read at:

 http://www.mercurycenter.com/business/microsoft/trial/filings/remedy042800.htm

It proposes breaking Microsoft into 2 parts, an Applications business
and an Operating Systems business.

On first reading it appears to address all of the major anti-trust
issues with one large exception: clause 2e. This exempts the
Applications business from compliance with most of the restrictions
i.e, contractual tying, use of unpublished APIs, knowingly interfering
with the performance of non-Widows applications, binding Middleware,
etc. This large loophole could render many of the document's
objectives impracticable.

Second, what is the objective of limiting the judgement to 10 years
(6c), and just 3 years for the restrictions defined in section 3?
This timeframe wasn't imposed on Standard Oil or AT&T.

Any clue as to which laptop or which video chip? For my Sony using
NeoMagic NM256AV on a 1024x768 screen I simply compiled framebuffer
support into the kernel and added a vga = 791 line to my lilo.conf for one

Killing netscape still leaves some some sort of lib.so program running in
a race condition that begins to consume all available processor time.
The easiest way to find that is to use 'top' and then hit 'k', enter the
process ID <enter> and then -9.

I am a little out of my depth here, but it might be necessary to change
the block size in order to boot UNIX/Linux from your cd-rom drive.
My Plextors have jumpers to do this, and I think it changes the block
size from 2048 bytes to 512 bytes when the drive is jumpered to
boot in UNIX environment.

Subject: Strange Netscape Behavior with RH 6.2

Here's one that's got me stumped!

I just installed RH 6.2 Linux on a Dell Latitude laptop. After fiddling
for a long time getting the display to come up at 800x600, everything seems
to be working great...

...except for one really strange thing....

When I run Netscape (4.7 or 4.72), the address book is completely
torqued!

I can add names, but they don't show up when I try to send mail. If I
try to click on names in the address book, about half will create the
modify dialogue, but half don't respond at all. Then, when I hit the OK
button, it adds another duplicate entry to the list, but it DOESN'T DISMISS
THE DIALOGUE. For every OK I hit, I get another duplicate name in the
list, but the window doesn''t go away until I hit CANCEL.

I've tried multiple copies of Netscape (all of which run fine on my RH
6.1 desktop). I've blown away the .netscape directory *and* the
/usr/local/netscape directory and started over from scratch. I've tried
multiple kernels (2.2.10 and 2.3.99-pre5). They ALL give the same
behavior. I'm wondering if there is something strange with the X server
that runs with the Neomagic video subsystem.
