Hi,
is it possible to make phone calls with voice
modem (intern/extern) under linux?
I do not mean voice-over-ip, i.e. phone calls
via the internet. I mean modem-to-telephone
connections.

Subject: Distribution "for" CD-urning w/ IDE?
Date: Sun, 14 May 2000 10:31:23 GMT
Hi guys!
I thought I'd throw out my old installation, RedHat 6.0, and do a
completely new installation with some new distribution, I don't know
which.
The thing I would like some help with is the following:
I have 2 IDE-HD (6 and 13GB) and one Sony CRX-100E CDWriter(IDE).
Is there any distribution that allows me to just start burn audio CD's
from the start or must I go through this "generic SCSI"-thing with
whichever I'd choose?
If I have to, could you recommend a distribution that makes this easy
at the installation procedure?
Thanks in advance,
Caj Zell

Well, the table appears to be as follows, colorwise:
Foreground Background
Black 30 40
Red 31 41
Green 32 42
Yellow 33 43
Blue 34 44
Magenta 35 45
Cyan 36 46
White 37 47
You can also use codes 0 (reset), 1 (bold), code 4 (bright/underline),
code 5 (blink), and code 7 (reverse video). Note that the codes
are processed in order:
echo -e '\033[0;31;42;5m'
which is an aesthetically ugly display, but illustrates the concepts
fairly well.
Note that these also work on Xterms (except for the blink, which changes
to bold), for those so inclined -- at least on RedHat 6.0, anyway.
However, you may also want to check out the curses library.
Programming against the curses library allows one to attach
e.g. a WYSE 60 or ADM or other such serial terminal, and any
properly written program using the curses library would just
need to change the TERM environment variable, and away you go,
as opposed to rewriting all of the escape codes. (It's not clear
how well serial terminals will support all the colors, I'll admit,
and the curses library isn't exactly the easiest thing to
program with.)
Followups reset.

- Internally, Scientology isn't democratically organised.
- People who want to leave the "church" are often put under severe
pressure. There are cases of ex-members who have been terrorised for
months and years after they left.
- Scientology's official policies on anything regarding leadership or
collection of data on subaltern personnel are pretty fascist

This is what's on top of my brain, I've got no intention on wasting
valuable time to inform you for the sake of a point that's clear
anyway. You can ask the responsible German officials for further
information if you're interested. I'm sure they've got a web presence.

Bullshit. Stop contorting the meaning of what I've said. The
government is not protecting *me* from anything, but protecting the
constitution from offenders.
And yes, it is very American to think that letting a criminal and
anticonstitutional organisation like Scientology act freely is just
"exposing the people to alternative points of view".
I've got no interest on continuing this conversation with someone as
naive as you.

Hello Mark,
I suspect you have to turn on PAP authentication. Many ISPs use this
mode.
I hope my suggestion works :)

This would certainly seem to be the case. (Now regretting having

Given the implications, I'm guessing it is (and thanks for the answers

Linux people don't believe in WYSIWYG! They are a bunch of command line

but I really don't like Frontpage. Is there anything else that does they

As you say, Aileen Frisch's book "Essential System Administration" is
very good and I have used it for years. However, I recently bought
Jochen Hein's "Linux Companion for System Administrators" and have to
like it even better than Frisch's book. For Linux systems anyway, it is
a real mine of information.

I have a problem. I've got two hard drives (one Windows, one Linux). The
computer boots using LILO. I would like to get rid of LILO an boot to my
windows disk, but still have the option of booting to my Linux disk using a
floppy. Anyone know how to go about doing this?
I have to do it because running both drives makes my Linux disk overheat and
not operate. Then, because, I guess, it is the disk that's actually
booting, I can't boot the windows disk no matter what (not even with a
Windows Startup disk).
Any help would be appreciated.

Have you ch
I take it you are planning to do web based stuff, i.e html front end for
applications.
After a succesful installation there should be a test database, that you
can access: mysl test
at the mysql console you can 'show tables', which should list the tables
in the test database. You can also ask mysql to 'describe' a specific
table in a database.
You need to learn some sql, or at least have an understanding and a
handy reference available, so you can create databases, tables & fields.
For cgi interaction with mysql over the web, php would may be easier to
learn if you are a newbie as it has a shorter learning curve, but if you
are more experienced, are prepared to put in the hours to learn or who
would like a more powerful scripting tool, perl would be a better
choice, using DBI/DBD to interact with mysql.

This is something I thought I heard once or twice before - AMD K6-* FPUs
might not be quite up to scratch compared to the Intel ones, or something
like that. In any case, it depends what you want to do - I know that for
having a notebook sitting onna knee recompiling a kernel, I'd choose AMD
any day. (Or rather, a G3, but so it goes ;)

I had the same proble. Netscape would run as root but crashed with a
bus error as a normal user. Try this as root....in the normal users
.netscape directory, delete the plugin-lst file. Then, copy plugin-lst
from root's .netscape directory to the user's .netscape directory.
Change the permissions on the file to reflect those of the normal user.
Netscape should then have no problems.
