What command line are you using?

The -exclude-list option just takes the name of a file containing a list
of file to exclude.

> I guess excluding 15000+ (and growing) files is too many ... :)
> Why the heck did they deprecate the -i !!! ARRRGGGHHHH!!

I've just tested this out with nearly 20000 files excluded - it took a
bit longer than usual, but worked fine - although it doesn't exclude
filenames that have spaces in them. Filenames with spaces can be
excluded using the -exclude option (using quotes around the filename).

The -i option never worked properly. You CAN include files/directories
using the name=name syntax.

Hmmm, I would like to know how you would use 'cp' to copy files less
than 30 days old ... personally I would use find and cpio ...

Excluding a file that's older than 30 days is the same as including a
file that is less than or equal to 30 days - so what's the problem?

If you think it's a JOKE, then I suggest you ask for your money back...

I use Nedit (or joe) to write LaTeX for things (or use LyX). It uses way less
resources. It edits text; I like that in a text editor.

Yes, there is a web browser and yes there is email (as well as other
things you'd expect an office suite to include).

Why in the name of bluearsed munkis would I use an office suite to write
code in, and why would I use a text editor as emailer, web browser,
spreadsheet, blah blah blah.

Emacs must be the closest "UNIX" ever got to the idiotic "Everything in One
Package" ideal touted by less clueful OSes. Lots of small, interoperable
applications is the True Way, not one great lump of hybridised bits and bobs
addons and boltons etc. StarOffice suffers from this too, but at least
sticks to the things you'd expect.

PJF

(and yes, I do occassionally use Emacs...as a text editor. Go figure. I also
ocassionally use StarOffice, but only to read/write Word docs. Apart from
that it stinks ;0)

Assuming the new partition you created is /dev/hda5 :
# mke2fs -c /dev/hda5
# mount /dev/hda5 /mount/point/wherever/

Without knowing the current layout of your disk, I can't advise you as to
where you should mount the new partition for maximum utility. I
personally have a lot of stuff in /home, so if your new partition is
fairly large, here's what I'd do:

# umount /dev/hda5
# mount /dev/hda5 /mnt
# cp -a /home /mnt
# rm -rf /home/*
# umount /dev/hda5
# mount /dev/hda5 /home

That just transferred all the stuff in /home to /dev/hda5, and mounted
/dev/hda5 on /home.

When you've decided where you want /dev/hda5 to go, put this line into
/etc/fstab:

/dev/hda5 /mountpoint defaults 0 2

There is absolutely no reason you should need to do this every time you
shutdown or reboot. Which boot loader are you using, and how have you set
it up? Both LILO and *BSD's bootloader are perfectly capable of booting
WinXX if they're set up correctly. I strongly suggest you read the LILO
Howto at http://linuxdoc.org/HOWTO/mini/LILO.html and see if you can
figure out how to set things up correctly.

That said, if for some screwy reason you HAVE to do this, make a backup
copy of the MBR first, then use fdisk to set partition 1 to active, then
make a copy of this new MBR and add in a line to your shutdown script:

# dd if=/dev/hda of=/root/bootsector1 bs=512 count=1
# fdisk (set everything manually)
# dd if=/dev/hda of=/root/bootsector2 bs=512 count=1
(in shutdown script)
dd if=/root/bootsector2 of=/dev/hda

Subject: Poor support for Win4Lin
Date: Tue, 16 May 2000 12:30:19 GMT

I just purchased Win4Lin and tried to install it on Corel 1.1, but I was
told by Trelos support that it will only work on 1.0. I think the
problem is that I'm booting Linux from a Windows partition, which I told
them. I don't think you can boot a different kernel this way. If they
expect people to use their product they need to work a little harder at
supporting it. Their product, I think is key in getting Windows users
to switch to Linux. I wouldn't be able to switch over without it
because I need to run some Win apps. With the poor support they have
shown in this case they could really hurt the Linux movement. I guess
I'll give WINE a try. I would not recommend Win4Lin just based on
the quality of their support. I've included the message I recieved from
their support below.

Dear Chad Lemmen,

Thank you for purchasing Win4Lin. Sorry, but we do not currently
support
the version of Corel that you are running. The latest version we
support is
1.0. You can build the kernel using the source from our ftp is you are
able. Otherwise, I think you may want to consider running another more
popular distribution if you want to run Win4Lin. You can get
distributions
for around $2 ,for the price of the CD, plus postage from websites like
www.cheapbytes.com or www.linuxmall.com. We look forward to having you
as a
happy customer. If you have any questions please send email to

Might be a better idea to restrict your modules to accepting/producing
XML (if you feel up to designing a DTD). That way you can keep the
interface simple and separate out the look & feel.
Each module could receive one XML document and return one XML
document - have your code translate it to/from HTML/CGI.
This would also let you handle a load of validation, so that
IP_Address and Email_Address are defined in a standard manner.
Doesn't have to be XML, regardless that its flavour of the month, but
there are plenty of parsing libraries people could use.

XML would also let you deal with accented characters etc. Oh yeah,
encourage people to keep all their text in separate files to allow
easy translation. Oh, and have a standard for storing help-text too,
it'll help to keep things standard.

Not a small project if you're looking to do it right.

"The frontpage-extensions on the server returned the following error:

The file service.lck does exist in the _vti_pvt folder, and the

problem then?

Any help would be appreciated :-)

I'm using slackware v.2.2.9 and have an epson stylus color 800 printer. I
installed apsfilter on my system and found that I can only print with lpr
using lp. Lpr won't print if I specify any of the other printer entries in
/etc/printcap. I've made some of these entries nearly identical to the lp
entry, although they include a filter entry after if (e.g.
:if=/usr/src/apsfilter/filter/aps-stcolor-letter-auto-mono:\).

Printing works fine with ghostscript. I've also been able to print using
alternative entries in printcap for an HP Paintjet printer. Whenever I
tried to print using a different spool with the epson, like lpr -P raw
<filename>, I can see that nothing is spooled to the printer.

Does anyone have an idea of what to do about this to make lpr print with
alternative printcap entries?

You didn't understand the point. UNDER LINUX (xcdroast), you have a whole host of
options about what filesystem to create on the CD. There are options to use "DOS"
or "Windows with long filenames". I would think that "DOS" would create ISO9660
files 8.3 compliant which should be readable by any OS.

Can't you simply make links (hard, not symbolic) from a temporary
directory
on the same file system to the files you want to burn?

Then the temporary directory can be removed after mkisofs.

Hm, it probably needs some tricks to preserve the directory structure...

Hmmmmm that all looks OK.

Things to try:

Disable the internal network 'eth0', restart the networking and see if it
still fails. You can disable with linuxconf, netcfg or edit the
/etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ipcfg-eth0 file.

If the recieve light is flashing on the modem then the outgoing packets
*from the modem* are OK - so the fault could be between that device and the
NIC. Now being a lowly Brit, I haven't seen a cable modem, so I don't know
what sort of device it is. I guess it is connected via a piece of CAT5 cable
with RJ45 plugs (regular network cable or crossover) to the NIC - eth1. If
this is the case, could the modem in fact be a basic router - in which case
it too needs to be configured to route back to eth1. A hint to this would be
if the cable is a crossover - that is, intended to replace a hub with only 2
connections - as it appears the modem is then it's own network device.
Then again, I could be talking out of my ar*e.

Finally, try reconfiguring the NIC's the 'other way around' just to make
sure the card is OK - or use various diagnostic tools that would have come
with the NIC. Another thing would be to get a 'spare' pc set up with the IP
address of the ISP's gateway: 96.34.213.129/28 to see if they talk - or try
diagnostic driver echo server tests.
