That looks to be ok, in the printer directory in /var/spool/lpd you
should have a .config file, check that to see if it has the correct
share, user and passowrd. On the windoze side of things you have to have
created a user with access to the shared printer.

Subject: Kernel 2.2.14 and Sound problems
Date: Sat, 13 May 2000 15:09:04 GMT
I just downloaded and compiled the 2.2.14 kernel. I have a few
problems, i would appreciate help on:
First off, I am running Red Hat 6.1 on a Compaq 5150, 128RAM, AMD-K6
at 350 MHz.
1. Now, when I reboot my machine, I get two messages that I did not
get before:
a) etc/rc.d/rc.sysinit: /proc/sys/kernel/sysrq: no such file or
directory.
b) at some point when the machine is loading all it has to load I
get numerous messages saying that the kernel version in my System.map
file doesn't correspond to the actual kernel version.
At first glance there is nothing wrong with my machine, it works fine
with the new kernel, I just want to know what I should do to fix that. I
have compiled the proc fs into the kernel.
2. I have compiled quite a few things as modules, one of which is
modules. I was wondering if there is anything else I have to do, except
make modules and make modules_install. I notice that in my /boot there
is a file called module-info-2.2.12.20 (which is my old kernel and came
precompiled from Red Hat 6.1). I was wondering if I have to create a new
file for module info, or whether I should edit that one.
3. Finally, I am having problem with my sound card. I compiled sound
into the kernel. When I was making xconfig and read the help associated
with the sound card, it said that I should know the IRQ, I/O and DMA for
my card, because it will ask me later. Well, it never did. And I still
don't have sound compiled. Would that be a problem with my card, or... I
read several times all the HOWTOs on Sound and compiling sound and they
all said that config (or xconfig, or menuconfig) should ask me at the
end questions about my card. Well, it doesn't. The sound cards on the
Compaqs are integrated and mine is ESS1869.
Help will be greatly appreciated.

I found that after installing the RealPlayer 7 plugin for Netscape as
my normal user, this would happen. My solution was to delete my ~/.netscape
directory and let Netscape re-create it.

this works for mutt, and should work for others, in your

I've recently noticed that my listings now come out with "Printed by
from" in the top right corner. It should be "... by keeling from
hostname" Why is it failing?
I've read through the apsfilter docs, and they mention that a2ps was
"fixed" with user and hostname compiled in. Is this related?
I tried adding "-user keeling ..." in both ~/.apsfilterrc and
/etc/apsfilter and that makes queued jobs silently disappear.
Thanks for any help you can offer.

If you are looking for anything linux, you are usually better off using
http://www.google.com/linux than altavista.
You can read your local copy of the DNS-HOWTO, or this online-version:

This is what I'm interested in. Most everything else in this discussion
is a red herring. IMO, it's on-topic (if only tangentially) because
many technology companies are funded, in part, by scientology, and many
more use management principles that are consistent with scientology.
Yes, even open source shops. So I ask again, what values and ideals are
you referring to?
WRT allowing your government to "protect you" from exposure to
alternative points of view, Gods save us from such noblesse oblige. I
don't think it's healthy. I'm sure that you will regard this opinion as
"very American", but it isn't. Some individual rights must be inviolate
from government and resilient to the prejudices of others. Among those
rights are freedom of speech, religion, and association. This is
essential to the social contract in any democracy.

Subject: StarOffice shutdown
Date: 13 May 2000 20:57:58 GMT
I've been trying to get StarOffice 5.1 to run under Red Hat 6.2,
without success. It either aborts midway through the loading process or
quits with an "unrecoverable error" shortly after loading. I've tried
running it in both KDE and Gnome desktop. This is with 32 mb of RAM and
85 mb of swap.
Anyone have any clues? Is this a known incompatible combination?
The Windows version of the same program runs flawlessly on the same
machine.
One other question: why are my screen fonts in Linux generally so
primitive compared to the same fonts in Windows? Is there a cure? I've
noticed the discrepancy particularly when using 12 point Times Roman in
WordPerfect for Windows and then comparing the appearance of the screen,
at any zoom, to the same typeface in WordPerfect 8 for Linux

They will be going into environments where the users will not know the
proper shutdown proceedures, nor even why they should be followed. Is
there a way to protect Linux against the effects of power interruptions
(power failure, maid trips over plug, etc.) My goal is to make Linux run
as much like a dedicated hardware device as possible.
Is there a program that periodically syncs the disks? How about running
without swap? Any other ideas (other than providing a UPS)?

I figured this out by saving the output of color 'ls' to a file and
'man terminfo'
#!/usr/bin/perl
print <<EOF;

\033[01;36mCyan\033[0m

There is a daemon that syncs the disks, the question is how to get it to
sync immediately instead of when it gets around to it. See 'man bdflush'.
Flushing writes immediately may be more reliable, but not as fast.
Swap is temporary anyway so it is not a power failure issue.
The most reliable is a UPS with a way for the kernel to monitor it, but
any UPS is better than none.

:
: 1. Quick query - pkg_info -aI isn't as fast as rpm -qa. I guess this comes
: from rpm's database as opposed to filesystem walking with pkg_*.
I'd hesitate to call speed a feature. Not to mention, on my system
`pkg_info -aI' is infact, very quick. We're not talking state of
the art machine either; this is a rather loaded P200 with 138
package entries.
An index database might be nice, but I wouldn't consider it critical
unless there were thousands of package entries, which would be
uncommon at best.
: 2. rpm -q apache, gives me everything I want to know. With FreeBSD, I need
: to first do
:
: $ pkg_info -aI | grep apache
: $ pkg_info -L apache-x.y.z
I consider version information a feature myself.
: 3. Conflict detection. If one package overwrites files from another, pkg_*
: doesn't warn me.
I'll grant you this. It can be worked around, however, without too
much problem:
$ for file in `pkg_info -qL gmake-3.79.tgz`; do test -e $file && echo File
exists: $file 1>&2; done
File exists: /usr/local/man/man1/gmake.1.gz
File exists: /usr/local/bin/gmake
File exists: /usr/local/info/make.info
Wrap it up into your .profile or its own file if you like:
pkg_conflict () {
for pkg in $@; do
for file in `pkg_info -qL $pkg`; do
if [ -e $file ]; then
echo $pkg: File exists: $file 1>&2
fi
done
done
}
If pkg_info were written in Perl as it probably should be, I'd
likely offer to patch the above functionality in myself. The silly
thing is in C though...and I don't like working in C. :-(
: 4. Handling binaries. Because rpm has a fixed hearder followed by a
: compressed archive, it can read the contents of a binary package,
: without decompressing it.
I've always considered RPM's non-standard file format a misfeature,
myself. pkg_info doesn't decompress to disk, if that's what you
might be thinking.
In the end, I wouldn't call any of these, even combined, to be
reason enough to dump pkg_*. Perhaps reason to add particular
functionality, but that's about it.
