There is a way to run Linux on Windows 98?, like VMware and win4lin does to
run Windows on Linux.

I have to do work on Windows 98 but I would like to run Linux at the same
time.

J.I.

I'm sure. :) If Microsoft rigged things so that Web pages could grab
people's emails automatically, it would be front page news (so to
speak). There are a lot of Web site owners who would love this
capability, but they have to ask you explicitly for your email.

The user's email is simply not part of the information that HTTP knows
about. That's not only a privacy issue, but a technical one. How could a
Web browser, in general, even know what a user's email is?

HTTP does know the domain from which a request is being made, though.

Read up the DNS-HOWTO . Also try the O'Reilly book "TCP-IP Network
Administration" by Craig Hunt and the book "DNS and BIND" by Albitz and
Liu.

Setting up a DNS server increases in complexity with complexity of the
network. However a cacheing only name server should run out of the box.

You need /etc/named.conf
other files in /var/named
man ndc
man named

Hope that helps you get started

this means your character map is fucked up. You can fix it by
typing: reset

This reloads the standard character map for the terminal.

"This stuff" are the single most essential functions the kernel exports.
Most likely, your System.map is not where it's supposed to be. If it is,
another option is that you haven't enabled loadable module support in your
kernel.

Adobe Acrobat runs under Linux as well and is free. It reads them. Not
sure what you would use to update them though, presumably something from
Adobe that costs money.

There's a difference between the interrupt your hardware is set to give
and the interrupt you register with the kernel for that device. A kernel
only comes in /proc/interrupts when the interrupt is registered and the
interrupt is only registered when it is going to be used. X is the one
that needs the interrupt, so the interrupt will only be in
/proc/interrupts when you're using X.

any one can give a link or have information on how can one
enter a bug report if they find a problem in the linux OS?

Is there an official site setup so one can do that? if not,
how does one report a bug in linux? is it distro specific?
I see rhat have a bug report page

http://bugzilla.redhat.com/bugzilla/

But if one has a bug in kernel, is that the place to
report it? btw, I did not see such a thing on Suse web site.

looking at http://www.kernel.org I did not see a place
to report a bug.

I think there should be one place to report bugs for linux. The
way it is now seem confusing. How do people enter bug reports
against other OS's such as windows? (not a window user so I do
not know).

I have been using Linux for quite some time now but I still don't have

Still missing some of the development tools. It looks the wine package

This is really good advice. I see questions here all the time about
getting started with Linux. I think the point it to just get it all
installed and then see what it's about. After you get your feet wet
you can then make decisions about what not to use.

Under RH6.1, the printer port is normally /dev/lp0. So you may have
something set up in a non-standard way. Can you show us your
/etc/printcap file?

How do I change the plan under finger. It has been a long time since I did
this. How would I change the plan so when someone fingers me it gives them
a message instead of 'no plan'

Thanks

Dave

Also, you can install linux using UMSDOS (unix in microsoft DOS)
mode--meaning using FAT16 (and maybe FAT32?) to install linux. If you
do this, you do not have to repartition your drive (linux works in a DOS
partition without interfering with DOS stuff there). The downside is it
is less efficient than when using its own file system. But if you just
want to have linux around occasionally, this can work fine. Slackware
has an option to install in this mode...and I'm sure some of the other
major vendors do, too. Note, you still have to boot into linux if you
do this; you cannot run Linux in a "window" in Win98 with this method.

Hi all,

In my lilo.conf file there are a few lines I don't understand...

map-drive=0x80
    to=0x81
map-drive=0x81
    to=0x80

These lines are in the section that codes for the windows drive on my
machine. I was just wondering what they represented and especially
what those numbers mean. Thanks.

Do you mean non-free as in beer non-free or RMS non-free? If
you mean the former, check out http://linux.aureal.com

They're not brilliant, but the sound in Quake 3 works, and mp3s play
fine :-)

Check that the home directory and shell specified in /etc/passwd exist,
and that the shell is marked executable. Check that all the fields make
sense and are in the correct format. My /etc/passwd looks like:
        root:2LgCkiJ3moqsd:0:0:root:/root:/bin/bash

If it still doesn't work, su to root and check /var/log/messages for PAM
errors and the like, then tell us about them.
