Syslog messages belong to an service/ application (facility) and they
have a servirity level (priority). You have to find out, as which
service the program logs its messages, then you can edit syslog.conf
approprietly. E.g. add a line like this:
your_program.* -/var/log/your_program.log
This will put all messages of facility your_program into the given
file. =
man syslog.conf

you don't get it, do you? Linux is developed by thousands of hackers
all over the world, setting up some bloody contracts and specs
for every interface in the kernel, not only will slow us down,
it will be a nightmere to maintain. Who the hell is going to maintain
all those specs and tests? you want one, you write your own.
Linux does not follow those procedures, becuase linux does not need 'em.
Everything you ever wanted is in the code. you want to find something,
get the source code and see how it works. no bloody specs or test suites
will ever be as good as looking at the source code.
Many people want to change the way linux is written, but it will never
change, that is how it works and that is how it will always work. if
you do not like it, go write your own OS.

That is pretty much the definition of an interface. And it is
not having stable interfaces that makes something a nightmare
to maintain.
>Linux does not follow those procedures, becuase linux does not need 'em.
You don't need them as long as it is a one-man-show. But even a
brilliant man has limits.

Without stable interfaces, no two people can work on different
parts at the same time. You also can't test both sides of
the interface separately to isolate problems.

Fortunately it doesn't have to be that drastic because there already
are alternatives that are pretty much compatible at the application
level. So, there is no great risk involved in waiting to see
how far this approach can go.

You need to install the libc development package, which contains these
files. (Also make sure that you have installed the binutils.)
Also: the current kernel version is 2.2.15. There are release notes
for 2.2.{11,12,13,14,15} at http://www.linux.org.uk/ .

The "-lcrypt" makes the linker look for files by the name of "libcrypt.so"
and "libcrypt.a" AND NO OTHERS (such as "libcrypt.so.SOME_NUMBER"). You
need a symbolic link from /usr/lib/libcypt.so [*] to /lib/libcrypt.so.1.
You may also want to investigate why your distribution or installation did
not make this link.
(*--The usual place for libcrypt.so.1 is /lib, but ld(1) does not search
there, but rather in places like /usr/lib.)

I'm a newbie, so handle me with kid gloves...
I ran setup for the aspfilter and it informed me that it had found
ghostscript 5.10 and I should upgrade to 6.01. I did so and reran

upgrade.
I executed gs from the prompt and the version number came up as 6.01.
I've deleted all references to ghostscript 5.10 in the file structure,
yet when I run aspfilter setup... same message. Where am I going wrong

Don't do that. This isn't Windows; you need to fight that ingrained
reflex. Usually, it just wastes time.
>is thier any hope for me now???
Looking back through this thread, I now realize that you never mentioned
your graphics card. What kind of card is it? Make, model, and chipset,
please. Your first message referred to ATi at some point--do you have an
ATi Rage 128 card? (Often sold as "Fury" and "Fury Maxx" among other
things...) These are not supported well in Xfree86 3.3.5, which SuSE 6.3
shipped with. However, you can grab an updated package from SuSE itself,
which might be the easiest way:
ftp://ftp.suse.com/pub/suse_update/6.3/xsrv3/xsvga.rpm (1392 K)
Download that package and install it with the command
rpm -Uvh xsvga.rpm
while working as root. Then try SaX again, using the SVGA server if SaX
doesn't detect the card automatically.
If that doesn't work, SuSE 6.4 shipped with Xfree86 3.3.6, which does
support Rage128 cards, or you can download packages from xfree86.org.
Here are a couple of links for guides on updating the entire xfree86
package:

There have been attempts to track bugs and patches, and control source,
but they have failed because Linus didn't like how they worked. Larry
McVoy promised to build him a new, custom system. It is called
"BitKeeper", and (presuming that it turns out to be real and not an
extended form of vaporware) it will be used at some date in the (distant?)
future.
There is an article at http://lwn.net/1999/features/BitKeeper.phtml, mostly
about the non-OpenSource-ness of this product. In any case, it tells us:
: Some background is in order. Larry has built up an impressive resume
: over the years, with stints at places like SCO, Sun, SGI, and
: Cobalt. Much of that time has been spent hacking on one kernel or
: another, and, at Sun, putting together configuration management tools.
: BitKeeper provides all of the features of systems like SCCS or CVS, and a
: lot more. BitKeeper was designed from the beginning to work with
: multiple source repositories, and to facilitate moving patches from one
: repository to another.
: The multiple repository scheme is designed to work well with large,
: globally-distributed development teams. The patch management allows for
: the handling of changes, and for filtering these changes on their way up
: to the "master" repository. In the Linux kernel case, this means that
: Linus can benefit from much greater peer review of patches before he has
: to see them. With some luck, the result should be a reduction in the
: number of "Linus does not scale" burnouts that have occasionally halted
: kernel work in the past.

What a MORON you are.
That is exactly what a bug-tracking system do.
A bug-tracking system is a vehicle to manage progress towards solving
a defect in a product.
Communication between interested party about the specific bug is done
via this system. This way, all communications, information, and
final resolution is kept in one centralized place for ever and is
not lost.
compare this to the idiotic process of people in the dark sending
email to doug and alan asking questions and wasting time.
I just hope that peter is the exception to the rule, and linux
programmers are more mature and expeirenced software engineers
than this particular idiot project them to be.

Thanks for your advice. In fact I'm using "Nuts & Bolts" on the Win 95
partition. It's scandisk type program noticed that the dos was missing
from the boot mbr and offered to fix it for me. All went well and I'm now
booting from the boot zone of the Linux partition.
Thanks anyway, Chris

Subject: statfs64 or 2gig limit problem
Date: Thu, 25 May 2000 21:30:07 GMT
I am running RH6.2 on an intel box,
compiling with -D_LARGEFILE64_SOURCE (dont know if I need this),
and the following code snippit, the problem is I am trying to see
a drive larger than 2 gig and get the information from it, seems to not
return the correct data.
Has anyone come accross this one before? Do you have an example?
Thanks ahead of time.
////////////////////////
struct statfs64 buf;
if (statfs64("/usr", &buf) == -1)
exit(0);
printf("%llu\n", buf.f_blocks);

I recently got ADSL service from SNET, another SBC company. They gave
me a choice of an external SpeedStream modem that had a USB connection
(I said no), or a regular LAN modem with a PCI ethernet card (I said
yes). They supplied me with a Kingston 110 NIC card, and a SpeedStream
5260 ADSL external modem. They suppled the Windows software
(Enternet). With this setup, which uses a dynamic IP via a PPPoE
connection. for my Linux connection, I found Roaring Penguin
(www.roaringpenguin.com) has a great little program that connects very
nicely to my ADSL.
I spoke to someone in their emerging products area - I really did not
expect them to have any expertise in Linux. I stayed away from USB only
becuase the 2.4 kernel isn't out yet, and I knew I would have a better
chance with a regular network card. BTW, they use filters on the lines
instead if a splitter - it works very nicely.
They may not use these brands - Alcatel modems are also a favorite.
Hope this helps!

If you can find one in a closeout bin somewhere, a Lexmark Optra 40 is an
excellent choice. I bought one for about $85 from buy.com about a month
ago, but I think they've run out. (Egghead.com was reputed to have some
not too long ago, too.) Failing that, you may want to check what's
available in your price range from your favored stores and then
cross-reference that against the database at:
