Hi everybody,

has anyone had experiences with an error like "Malformed archive" while
building a static lib with ar under Linux?

I  have had this kind error several times now. I have used ar with options
"rv" to build an archive which already had been build before. Usually ar
should overwrite this archive but in some cases it seems not to do so.

I am a kind of deserted here and will appreciate any help you can give me.

I use the default kernel from the SuSE6.4 distribution and would like to
know how this kernel is configured. The only thing I know is that I can
not trust the config file that comes with the distribution.

How can I figure out how my current kernel got compiled ?

Go into /usr/src/linux/ and do a "make config" (or "make menuconfig"
or "make xconfig"). The configuration that shows up is the last one
used (probably the one used for building the kernel you're using now).

I think the configuration is stored in /usr/src/linux/.config or some
similar place...

Analyzing the 'vmlinuz' file is kinda' hard...

Hi,

I've configured the E menu to launch every app but one and I can't figure
out why. What am I missing?

"XEyes" NULL exec "xeyes"
"XClock" NULL exec "xclock"
"XLogo" NULL exec "xlogo"

The xlogo will not run when activated through the menu. Yet it will run from
a terminal. Anyone have any ideas as to why it won't?

Yeah.  That's the plan.  My motherboard manual says 300W, which is
what I have now (I give it another two months, it's starting to make
noise and smell like burning electronics).  Problem is, it's damn hard
to find >250W power supplies that don't come in $250 hot-swap
redundant 400W convifugrations.

Probably I'll end up just buying a new case (with the aforementioned
dual hot-swappable 400W supplies) because my current one is completely
inadequate for the task.  Too bad all the ones I'm looking at cost
$850, which I refuse to pay.

Hi;
Last night I tried to use gnorpm to update some packages using webfind.
But when I tried that nothing happened, so I ran gnorpm form a terminal
session.  The message said that the package could not be downloaded.
Next I tried to go to the same ftp location using Netscape.  This time
the message was that login was denied because the forward and backward
address lookup did not match.

Can anyone point me in the right direction and/or show me the document
that tells how to correct this problem?

My monitor manufacturer says that the monitor I have can do
1024x768 at 60kHz 75Hz and at 68.7kHz 85Hz. How do I specify the
vertical and horizontal refresh rates in /etc/XF86Config.

If you don't want to do this every time you have build or installed a 
new kernel, you can add an intermediate lilo and put it into an unused
bootsector:
e.g. /dev/hda           NT bootsector
     /dev/hda4          intermediate lilo booting /dev/hda5 through the
                        chain loader
     /dev/hda5          your normal boot loader to load linux

Note that you have to create an extra lilo.conf.chain, and that you need
two different map files, one for /dev/hda5 and an extra map.chain for
/dev/hda4. 
If you now copy the boot sector of /dev/hda4 as bootsect.lnx to your NT
partition, you can rerun lilo for /dev/hda5 as often as you want without
having to copy any boot sector around.

Yes both running RH6.2 and both with Netscape 4.72.
However they have different hardware.

The other day I was experimenting with color depth to get a certain software
package to work (vmware in full screen mode) , I was using
XF86Setup to make the changes now when I boot up I it won't display anything
I tried cntrl +alt +backspace and cntrl +alt +f1 nothing happens. what can I
do log in and restore the display settings? I made a backup of X86config
file.
