What world do you live in! Some of us have been on T1s for the last 15
years, and are moving to internet2. The argument against html is that
it's not ascii, and it depends on the receiving person having the good
will and ability to read it (something which I won't bother doing).
If you have somthing you think worth saying to me, have the good grace

How do I access them? I've seen mention of info something or other but
do not know about them. Have man pages been replaced by "info"? I can
info chmod but not strcpy.

What does wasting disk space with a whole lot of extra text have to do with
download times.?You also felt it neccessary to email me with two copies of
your reply. If everyone decided to markup up their email with html and send
2 copies as well, you'd be no better than your average spammer.

man pages have been replaced by info in the GNU project, but practically
nowhere else (because they have not been able to convince anyone else that
man pages should go away).
You need to have the libc info pages installed, of course, in /usr/doc or
/usr/share/doc. You may have to choose "libc" or "glibc" rather than
"strcpy". (Are you getting the info page for the chmod() function, or the
chmod fileutils program?) Learning to use the info program itself is a
task in itself. There is also a fine info interface in (x)emacs, if you
use that, and there are yet other info readers and also a program that
translates texinfo (the metaformat in which info pages are currently
written) to HTML.
There are Linux-specific man pages also available at
ftp.us.kernel.org/pub/linux/doc/manpages (substitute your country code for
"us" as appropriate).

If you are really talking about the 2.3.9 kernel released almost one year
ago, that is a development kernel that no one is interested in, and you are
unlikely to get any aid with it. The current development version is
2.4.0-test1 (or 2.4.0-test1-ac*).

Hi Alexander
The group and user nobody are a security feature of linux. Nobody is
typically the user running a web server. If a priviledged user like root
runs a web server, any child processes started by the web server are run
as root user processes. This opens up an enormous security hole.
The group and user nobody are used to give ownership of important
processes to a non-priviledged user. This means that any child processes
run by a process that is owned by nobody are denied root priviledges,
and are less likey to create security problems on your system.

Don't know if you got this straightened out, and I'm not sending this to
the list 'cause the message is kind of old, but this sounds a lot like a
heat buildup problem. Is the air conditioning working in the room where
this computer sits? Try putting a bigger fan/heatsink on the processor.
The fact that the problem goes away when you reduce clock speed (less
heat) but reappears when you add hardware (more heat) is a dead giveaway
of a heat problem.

What sort of application is this? Most text console apps don't care about
whether X is running or not, but SVGAlib apps can't be run at the same
time as X apps. SVGAlib is old, mostly obsolete, and presents several
security risks... see if you can find an X equivalent.

When you first boot, enter:
linux 3
and you'll get to a text console with X not running.
Alternatively, from KDE, press Ctrl+Alt+Backspace.

you are logged in as root and transfer to a remote system you change to

Use mysqladmin to make the accounts, then make sure you give the relevant

Hi,
I've problems with an old ncd X terminal I bought recently. I can see
it on my network (or rather it can see others) I can even upload
"dump" to other machines from the terminal. However I cannot boot
the X server. Obviously I do not have the "boot load file" but I was
thinking that I would be able to find one on the Internet. Effectively, I
found a few:
-rwxrwxrwx 1 root disk 1198152 May 31 16:20 Xncd15b
-rwxrwxrwx 1 root disk 1204632 May 31 16:20 Xncd16

-rwxrwxrwx 1 fraczak disk 1845540 May 31 16:35 Xncdxpl
Still NCD X terminal complains
Incorect object file
for all of them. Itself by default is looking for file "Mncd19r".
Any ideas?

It depends on what the Sun shops are trying to do. If they're worried
about interoperability, GCC might be a better choice for them even if
it generated worse code. This is the case in many instances for us,
as we are becoming more heavily involved with GNU/Linux these days.
For many applications the speed difference is small. I've even run
into the odd app where GCC generates better sparc code by a wide margin,
but admittedly this is unusual.

I don't run Mandrake so I can't swear that this will work but it is a bit
of
a convention to make runlevel 5 the one for graphical logons.
When the graphical logon is selected as the default,
it sets the default runlevel to 5 in the inittab file.
This can be overridden at boot time by specifying the run level
along with the boot image label. ( I can't remember the switch )
The runlevel can also be changed while running by using telinit,
To go to a single user mode for system maintenance:
telinit 1
To go to a normal multi user network enabled mode,
telinit 3
this shuts down runlevel 5 and goes to runlevel 3.
when you exit your session on runlevel 3,
I think it should return to runlevel 5.
( It works this way when droping down to runlevel 1 from 3,
and returning to runlevel 3. I only used xdm for a short while
and I don't remember trying this with it, but the runlevels
should work the same way )
When changing runlevels, it shuts everything down
before going to the new runlevel, keep this in mind if your
on a network and sharing services with other users.
None of this will help you if your system isn't using runlevel 5
to start up xdm ( or kdm etc... )
To check this out look in inittab for a line like:
# Run xdm in runlevel 5
x:5:respawn:/usr/bin/X11/xdm -nodaemon
the label "x" on the left doesn't matter,
the list of numbers specifies the runlevels for this process,
in this case just runlevel 5.
respawn means that it starts a new one when the old one exits.
The path, the actual executable, and the switches may vary as well.
I know of xdm and kdm, but I know there are others.
A line, usually near the beginning of inittab, specifies the default
runlevel
id:3:initdefault:
again the label is inconsequential, the number is the default runlevel,
and initdefault is what tells it that this is the default runlevel.
If you have a similar line specifying 5, then this is the way your system
is starting the X session manager.
hope this helps some

I'm sure a full DB unload is supported in pgsql but you could write a small shell
script to unload the tables you need - use 'copy ... from <tablename> to
<filename>' and vice versa in psql.
eg: psql [dbname] < [scriptfile.sql]
- where the script file contains the sql statements you want to run against the
database.
To get back to the original query - start with mSQL or MySQL to learn the basics,
then move on to PostgreSQL when you need things like Multi-Query Transactions
(Rollback, etc.). Getting going with PostgeSQL is more involved - and there's the
rub. It's always the case - when you can configure more of the tool you're using,
you have to know more about it :-|
Check out the new developments at http://www.postgres.com - I think they'll be
pouring some money into development and support, so things should get even
better...

Derek

Lately my Netscape also seems to be getting its knickers in a knot :-(
But I'd be carefull about automatically killing Netscape off, it takes 97-100%

The Iomega is not the problem - your version of the Linux kernel doesn't
