The amiga had many capabilities. TRUE Multitasking (priority based round robin.)
The ability (with add on components) of producing commercial quality video. Some
commercials were done (dont ask for name I know them not) and most cable companies
used the
amiga for the program schedule channel output. (saw a few of those guru meditation
system faults on my local cables program channel) (for you windows users thats like
a BSOD). Was the first real affordable desktop computer that had full scale rendering
software. (allthough slow as hell without a 68030 or better) A built in graphical
user
interface (not great but not bad either). It did all that running stock at 8mhz.
First computer to offer 6.5 million color output (albiet for stills with stock
hardware).
Used a 2 button mouse as apposed to apples 1 button. Also had a robust shell language
too
boot. REXX a software programming (language?) was pioneered on the amiga and later
spread
to other operating systems. (although it never really caught on and got left in the
dust)
Too damm much to list.

Hi there,
I'm a newcomer to Linux, although I did have limited experience of it whilst
at college ? years ago. I am very experienced with Windows.

I have a publishers edition of Red Hat Linux 6.0 (installed) and Caldera
OpenLinux 2.2 that came with 'The Complete Reference Linux 3rd Edition' by
Richard Petersen, and I have a few??? questions that I hope someone will
answer.

1) In this book he says that when installing Red Hat Gnome there will be an
icon on the desktop labelled CD-ROM and that by right clicking it you will
be able to mount the CD-ROM. Mine didn't. Is there anyway to re-create it?
2) When re-installing Windows the LILO seems to have been overwritten and I
have to boot from a floppy. Can I 're-activate' LILO?
3) When installing Linux I activated the Gnome Display Manager (graphical
login). Can I deactivate it and boot straight to the command line?
4) Probably not be able to help...but my monitor display bows out in Linux
but is rectangluar in Windows and can only get 800x600 resolution in Linux.
I have a Goldstar LG Studioworks 520Si monitor and an SiS 6326 display
adapter - I think I may need to replace these but can't afford to...yet.
Also I have and ESS ES 1869 soundcard, a Rockwell PCI Modem Enumerator
HCFModem with a Rockwell PCI56RVP modem that won't work - am using Windows
to send this.

Sorry this is so long but as I said - I am newbie and these niggles are
ticking me off, so any help will enable me to get to grips more enjoyably
with this OS.
Cheers
Tony

PS So far I think Linux is Ok.

Don't care much for OS/2 or BeOS, do you? Well, BeOS may not be viable
in the long term, but OS/2 will be around for years to come.

Actuall, Rexx was pioneered on VM/CMS. I used it when it was still in beta testing
for IBM internal use. It only later spread too other operating
systems and is now available on most OS. Rexx is still very much alive with Object
Rexx available now for Linux. There is also NetRexx which is
somewhat of a merging of Rexx and Java. All develpoed by Mike Cowlishaw of IBM.

I know that is one thing that is needed. I haven't worked with gtk/glib

I'm sure there is but I haven't attempted anything in that realm yet so
I will skip this for someone else.

boot with a rescue disk and once logged in to linux once again run
'lilo' at the prompt. This will put lilo back into the MBR. For future
reference anytime u reinstall windows this will happen as it likes to
put its own information over whatever may already be in the MBR so if
you ever get a new driver/computer/whatever, install windows first,
then linux.

edit your inittab file in /etc
Change the default runlevel from 5 (it could be set to 4 right now, I am
not sure what RH sets as their default runlevel for X windows) and
change it to 3 most likely. Someone who knows RH (I use SuSE) will be
able to tell you the correct values in case I'm wrong.
The line to edit will look similar to the following:
id:2:initdefault:

Not sure about the monitor. You may need to get an actual driver for
the Sis if u are using a generic svga driver for now. That may help with
the resolution. It is also possible that the current driver works but
that the default res. is 800x600. If that is the case try hitting CTRL
ALT and - to decrease resolution or CTRL ALT + to increase resolution.
If there are other resolutions available this will cycle through them.
If not then run Xconfigurator to select multiple resolutions and color
depths.

To get the sound working you should be able to run sndconfig at the
prompt. You should also look into ALSA. Their site is alsa-project.org

The modem will most likely (99% chance) not work. Goto
http://www.o2.net/~gromitkc/winmodem.html for more info and then
possibly www.linmodems.org depending on what the first site says.

You need to configure /etc/lilo.conf with an entry for your Windows
partition, and make sure that lilo.conf includes: boot=/dev/hda ... then
issue the lilo command at the comand line, as root. see: "man lilo" for lots
of details.

>3) When installing Linux I activated the Gnome Display Manager (graphical

I'm not familiar with either RH or Caldera, but somewhere in /etc there's a
series of subdirectories (something like /etc/rc_.d directories, where _ is
runlevel) look for entries like "s99gdm" (the 99 may be a different number.
This instructs the init routine to start gdm (gnome display manager).
Remove all such entries.

Sounds like you need to tweak your X config.

Correct me if I am wrong, but you're attempting to use AUTH_DES as the
authentication flavour for the NFS connection? If that's the case, I am
pretty confident that the current Linux NFS implementation does not
support AUTH_DES (even though the C library obviously does as it supports
NIS+).

Is there a way to connect two computers with a parallel cable. My aim is

I've read the nullmodem serial HOW-TO, but still am wondering if there
is a way of simply accessing the hard drive of the second computer and
