I assume you are using the default redhat kernel? One thing that may
help you is by getting all non-essential drivers out of your kernel (Do you
REALLY need raid drivers loaded in memory?) There are kernel compilation
docs,.. do a decent search for them. Recompile your kernel with drivers for
the hardware that you have only. When your machine hangs, RH has the
"Kernel Hacking" option enabled in their default kernels,. so that you can
do a "safe" reboot. When your machine locks up,. press and hold Alt+SysRq,
while typing "S - U - B" This will Synch your filesystems, Unmount your
disks, and reBoot, your machine. It's a temporary fix,.. if you are still
having the same problem after you have compiled a new kernel, repost.
Also,.. RedHat modifies their kernel,.. I hate that personally. They make
changes to the linux kernel (documented), but also not official.
Personally, I'd get the much better tested, stable official kernels from
www.kernel.org . Just my 2 cents, I hope it helps.

I am using Corel Office 2K w/ RH 6.2. It's basically the win version
running in a modified wine environment.

It's got a couple of quirks, but nothing major. Some
installation/printing quirks, a shutdown quirk... Performance is not
too bad - my home box is a p5/166 so everything tends to be slow....

Definitely worth the money if you need the functionality. We use Corel
at work, so home compatibility is a must. If you just need a basic
editor/spreadsheet, gnome has some good functionality and I'm sure there
are others as well - staroffice, applix....

Corel support seems to be non-existent, though. They rely on volunteer
techs via usenet for about 99.999% of all tech advice.

I have put the alsa files in /usr/doc/packages/alsa since I don't want

Could someone please tell me what ./configure options I have to use -

Michael,

I have no experience with Mandrake Linux but I am running RedHat. I had to put
in a partition called /boot to boot the system. That might help and it might
not. Every book I have read seems to agree to put that partition in there.

Secondly, if your RPM directories need to be uppercase, just go to Windows
Explorer, click once on the directory to hightlight it, click again and it
should let you change the name of the directory. That is of course if you are
installing from Dos Directories and that is what I understand from your post.

Good luck with your install and I hope you enjoy it as much as I do.......

: rm -i *

The canonical solution is that offered on the very first screen of man
rm and is easily the best. E.g.,

bash$ rm -- -f

will remove a file called -f, which we all somehow create now and again.

If the filename has lots of weird and/or unprintable characters, then
try to identify at least one alphanumeric character and use that in a
wild card rm, e.g., if the file looks like it's called -f$*A*7^%"&!( do

bash$ rm -i -- *A*

and selectively delete as appropriate.

Incidentally, the "--" option is usable in any GNU command that uses
getopts to parse its arguments (it says here). So for example one can
create weird filenames using touch as follows:

bash$ touch -- '-f'
bash$ touch -- '-f$*A*7^%"&!('

However, frequent users of filenames such as the above are likely to be
shunned at social gatherings and soon acquire a patina of despair.

You can also use the emacs dired option, although it's not as
universally applicable as the one outlined above, since not every
machine has emacs.

Like he said, DOS is case insensitive. In Windows 9x file names can have
upper and lower case. A DOS file system can be mounted in Linux three
different ways: "mount -t msdos" uses the MSDOS file system with its limits
of 8.3 filenames, no links, etc. "-t umsdos" simulates a Unix filesystem
by storing long filenames, permissions and other data in a "---linux.---"
file. "-t vfat" uses Windows long file names.

A majority agrees on an issue and does what? Elects a representative.
That's no democracy, that's elect-a-king! Even the most honest and
righteous get corrupted by the lack of accountability. Elections
every few years are a way too weak guarantee for their good behavior.
The SIGs will have plenty of time to do their magic, serving SIGs is
also the best way to get enough visibility to get elected.

Any such decisionmaking is also on a ridiculously high level. With so
many people, who cares if a few people get ignored.

Yes, there is a limit to commercials' efficiency, but it is nonzero,
or nobody would even bother to try them. Don't underestimate their
effect, either. People can make rational choices based only on the
information they have, they are not omniscient. Commercials aren't
the only thing which matters, either, if the "official" newssources
all agree on an issue.

>Your kind of comment always comes from somebody upset because they
>can't get their personal agenda put into law.

Rather, they want to have no laws or other people to meddle with their
lives. Laws are something you want always to have other people to
live with, "you" never need laws yourself to tell you how to live. I
would call it a paradox.

I wouldn't myself want to get involved in the elections game, I have
no intention to pretend to know what's good for others, I can only
speak for myself.

Decide on policy on local level, with direct democracy. Vote and have
a rough consensus; without consensus people have no longer a reason to
play along, and you end up with a tyranny of the majority. Appoint
delegates for large scale matters, mandate dictated by the local
community. Any conclusions of the delegates' negotations on
above-community level are only advisory, local communities decide on
how to implement them.

Don't bother to blaim people for their dependency on a system, they
seldom have a choice. They have every right to want it to change and
hate it, even if they need it currently. I would rather call the real
beneficiaries of the system parasites, the ones which absolutely love
it.

How is that possible? I tried installing 7.0 and I get a LILO
1024 error. I know I have to make a boot partition (just
haven't done it yet) but 7.0 still seems to have this limitation.

Does 7.1 fix that or what?

When I run netscape after making connection to my ISP, it says that
"Xlib:cannot open display:0.0" "Client is not authorized by server"

What is wrong with that ?

I tried to export DISPLAY="......:0.0" but still not working
